Round 4 - The Other Cheese Sandwich Games

This type of game is no good for the sport. Also that free kick at half time was ridiculous.
Spot on hombre.
Absolutely horrendous viewing.
Chip, stand, chip, stand.
Hinkley trying to minimise the damage in the first half by playing keepings off. Dees swallowing the field with their zones.
Was like watching paint dry.

Lot of ducking into tackles in that game to be honest. Not to mention flopping forward when tackled.

Something has to be done.

As for the Melbourne free on half time, give me a break. How about actually allowing forwards to go for the ball, the ball had not been kicked and the Port forwards are getting grabbed and pushed and have absolutely no chance to contest.

Melbourne are very good, they just seem to have numbers everywhere. Kicking a high pass is a recipe for disaster against Melbourne because you simply can't give them the time to get to the contest. The way they protect space even with the silly stand rule is impressive. Every other team must be looking at this but how to get around them and how to cover space in the same way looks very difficult.

Spot on Melb is notorious for this, many of their players ducking. How about Viney got touched on the neck and threw his head back LOL

Melbourne quite simply play the Richmond game plan. may and Lever back. Like Rance and Grimes used to. Then Grimes and Vlustuin. They also keep a player back at all times. Like Grimes or Vlustuin,

3 small pressure forwards. They also Pressure all over the ground. Play the Forward handball game and they protect space more and expect a turnover by players upfield putting pressure on the ball carrier.

The pies got around us in 2018 by controlling the ball by short passes instead of just bombing.
Port tonight just played into Melbourne’s hands by continually bombing it forward,

One thing the Dess have over us is they have good ball users and they utilise the stand on the mark rule with pinpoint passes, less chance of turnovers.

Gee Watson’s a terrible commentator.
My wife was sitting next to me knitting, not watching the game and without looking up she asks: “why does that guy stumble and mumble and make no sense?”

Reminiscent of the the Pickett/Butler free kick last week in it's softness. You have a player instigating a shoving match then overreacting when the opponent retaliates. Wake up umpires.

Reckon the form of Rozee, Butters and Durrsma is doing just as much damage to Hinkley as the 0-4 start. Those three were Ports future but for whatever reason they’ve gone backwards, badly.

I hardly watch non Richmond games anymore. I find them way too frustrating.
As someone else said chip-stand-chip-stand …
Drives me crazy. That’s not footy

What happened to the high scoring??

The scoring is an interesting one, hard to compare but 2021 was the season they brought in the infamous stand rule so it is really the only comparison. Lots of talk about how the rules were increasing scores early in the season in 2021, the media seem a bit less enthusiastic this year maybe because the higher scoring didn't last in 2021 and they are actually learning that they should wait a bit. Weather, which teams are playing each other, changes in form etc all influence scoring but it was noticeable in 2021 that the scoring dropped off once we got further into the year, so how do they compare?

Let's have a look:

The average score for the first 3 rounds is actually very close, 85.1 for 2022 and 85.6 for 2021. It was in Round 4 that it dropped last year, to 78.22 and Round 5 was 79.11. So, the question is whether the scoring will again drop as the season progresses. The game last night, with an average score of 52, was pretty low.

I threw in the average margin too as the AFL talks about wanting close games. This does depend a bit on match ups and a blowout here or there has a big influence, but the margins, so far, were higher in 2021 and they are very variable - the average margin in Round 4 fell dramatically in 2021, but then went back up in Round 5 (helped by a healthy win by the Tigers over StKilda :) ).

Who knows what is going on, we need a bigger sample, but the average score last year was below 80 and it has been dropping for years. Clearly defence has become more important and the AFL are trying to combat this with their rule changes. But this has not led to increased scoring. I would still argue that they are not really pursuing the right way to go about this - I really don't like the stand rule, 6-6-6 and the player on the mark at a kick out being half way down the ground. Playing on from a kick out I don't mind as the little kick to oneself was barely an impediment anyway. What I would have pursued is more protection for the player willing to go for the ball - no grabbing, no pushes in the back when trying to gather the ball, forwards not harassed well before the ball is kicked to their area etc - ironically all of this requires no change in the rules, just an enforcement of rules which have been around for decades.
