Looking for a nice Restaurant in Melbourne to take my better half out to for our anniversary in a couple of weeks..

Thought it a good idea to start a thread where PREnders can post some of the restaurants they've been to that they recommend.

Any suggestions?

Just last week, we had an anniversary dinner! Went to Misuzu's in Albert Park, very nice. Japanese place split into three sections - there's a bar, then a takeaway place in the middle, then a Restaurant (all with separate entrances). Enjoyed it very much, so highly recommended. Good selection of sake and shochu if that's what you're into.

Wherever you end up going, have a great night!

Overpriced - Vue (book three months ago)
Interesting, stylish - Attica (Ripponlea)
Classy, elegant - Becco
Romantic - Circa (St Kilda), European
Funky, cool - Ginger Boy
Hip, happening - Newmarket (St Kilda)

I've listed them in order of price, starting from ~$1k (if you have a decent wine) to $150 - for two

I'd second The European. Not too pricey, great food and great ambience for a romantic anniversary.

Great idea. A description of the food and service would be appreciated as well.

Of the above I think Circa is the go given Oldie’s two week lead time. I took my misses there upon her arrival/migration to Australia. Is a more chilled environment than the Attica’s etc, however food is not as good.

Must say for a sweet tooth I was very disappointed with Attica’s desserts!

Doubt you will get into Vue or Attica at two weeks notice. Jacques Raymond, Florentino’s are higher-end options that are more likely. Don’t expect change from $700 for degustation menus, wine(s) etc.

For a regular bite I like Maedaya on Bridge road. Great atmosphere downstairs, food is good (not great) with sake bar and yakitori grill. Great option after a Tiger’s game although you can’t book unless in larger group after 7pm.

Two from Leysy Tooheys - Grossi Florentino's for top notch Italian in a romantic stately setting. As Elmer said not cheap but wont be dissappointed.

Been around for over a century.

Another great option ILO that has been around for only a few years is Maha's in the city, middle eastern cuisine thats a touch easier on the pocket but certainly still high end.

The Grill at Grossi Florentino is very good too, and a little bit more affordable than the restaurant i think

My favorite 2 restaurants would be the 'Maya Tequila Bar & Grill' in South Yarra...legendary Mexican food right there,
Also the 'Red Emperor' in Southbank, it's the Brett Deledio of Chinese restaurants...elite.

On a side note...going to Mrs Parma's tomorrow night with mates for dinner before going to the Geelong/Bulldogs game.

Haven't been there before, though its meant to be pretty good.

On a similar tangent the Hofbrauhaus in the city is a cracking night.

Huge Pork Knuckles, cold steins & things get a bit messy in the lederhosen's.

Does a good job imitating the traditional German beer halls.

Went there a fortnight ago before The Darkness gig, liked it. Parma's are quite thin though, reason they give is they can cook them evenly this way. Got one with meatballs on top ;D Great seasoning on the chips, and a nice selection of craft beer.

I am off to Ginger Boy next weekend. I have heard good reviews about it from friends who have been.

If my memory serves me correctly, the Hofbrauhaus is the name of the Munch Bierfest Tent were Ausses, Kiwis and Saffer used to congregate. Very very messy affair.

I had the pleasure of eating at Vue Du Monde maybe 3 years ago.

I was taken along by my lovely wife. It was a pretty special meal, 5 courses with matching wines etc.

I didn't know much about the place though and I certainly didn't know Shannon Bennett. Half way during the meal he walked out on to the restaurant floor. Where he was given a standing ovation from the majority of the punters.
At that point I became a little suspicious of the place.

Not long after came the bill. Over a $1000 for a dinner for two. Now I like to think I am not a cheapskate but jeez I nearly took off for the door. It was a nice meal, but you know, I have spent a grand on better things. Funnily enough Bennett didn't come back out to the restaurant after the bills were handed over.

Now every time I see him on TV i remind my lovely wife that she owes me $1000.

Wives! Take you out to dinner and leave you with the bill! $1000 hey? Bloody hell I don't think my combined eating out expense for my whole life would be a grand.

Went there a couple of months ago and the setting was beautiful, and the food was very good, but it's certainly overpriced. Unlike you Josey, the sommelier told us that the wine matching would cost up to $500, so I skillfully backed out and ordered a "cheap" red from Glenrowan for 90 bucks. Just on wine, did you know that restaurants put the biggest margin on the second cheapest wine as it's the most popular. No one wants to be a tightwad and order the cheapest bottle, so they go for the second cheapest. Anyway, our bill came in at about $600 which is certainly more than I'm use to paying. You can have an amazing meal for half that all over town.
