Surprised so many are low on Judson Clarke.

Want him to play 18 games and kick over 20 goals.

But if anyone wants to sell their stock, I'll buy.

yeah the knock is he drifts out of games and has never been a big possession winner.

Saying that, prob rushed leysy's list a touch and he should be a few spots higher.

Where do you have him Scooper?

It is a traffic jam of aspiring players close to AFL level and not enough spots for them

we aren't Norf or West Coast

Dow , Cumberland , MRJ & Ryan have been in the system a while
I think they all have sufficient mental and physical maturity and experience to grab the early available spots

over the likes of Banks , Brown, Tresize , Coulthard , Smith, Cambell , Green

I believe Gibcus will be slotted straight in barring injury

Sampson's fortunes might rest on how Kosi and Naithsmith perform in the preseason
there is a real chance they might leap frog him

Mate - has few mates, has to show show something under match conditions

As we are making the rules up as we go, I'm going to do it a bit differently, and probably less 'right' than others :)

Here is my list of our young'ns and a rating on exposed form (where/ if possible) and hope on where they will end up.

Alrighty, here we go.

Samson Ryan 6.5 - 8.5 (will cymbal hands hold him back?)
Noah Cumberland 2 to 7 - 8.5 (please let him find a good shrink!)
Matt Coulthard 6 - 8 (finds time, space, good speed and goal sense)
Thomson Dow 6.5 - 7.5 (can sublime handballing make up for poor kicking...?)
Hugo Ralphsmith 5.5 - 7 (he sure can run, but the rest???)
Jacob Bauer 5.5 - 8 (has potential, but where does he play?)
James Trezise 7 - 9 (kicks a few helicopters, but the rest is quality!)
Maurice Rioli 5.5 - 7.5 (hmmmm...)
Tyler Sonsie 3 - 9 (has come back in great nick, highly skilled)
Sam Banks 6 - 8.5 (lots of positives, just not totally sold)
Josh Gibcus 7 - 9 (looked the goods before the injury, hopefully he can progress from here)
Tom Brown 7 - 9 (yep, I like him muay mucho!)
Judson Clarke 6 - 8.5 (highly skilled and speeded...ed, but slight and needs to get more of the ball)
Steely Green 3 - 6.5 (meh)
Kaleb Smith 0 - 9 (Clarke seems to love him)
Seth Campbell 0 - ? (no idea)
Kane McAuliffe 0 - 9 (Reckon he is a future gun. Could be our Bontempelli, only stronger)
Liam Fawcett 0 - ? (no idea)
Mate Mate 0 - 6.5 (he's tall, and has great endurance but can he play footy???)

I'm feeling a bit better about our future potential now! :D

Thoughts?

Sons, Brown and Banks look to me to be the best so far. With just a view/hope that Matt C may really surprise. His ability to know where to be when and how to lead/drop back based on who has the ball upfield has been really, really impressive in the match sim stuff.

This is how I see it right now in terms of future player rating based on what I have seen (which for a lot of these players isn't much).

Gibcus
Cumberland
Ryan
Riloi Jnr
Coulthard
Tresize
Clarke
Sonsie
Brown
Banks
Dow
Ralphsmith

Some notes on some selections.

Ryan defaults high on the list given the opportunity he has had so far and the fact that with no Soldo around, he will continue to get a lot of opportunity. Hard one to work out for me. Young ruckmen always are. But our possible lack of other options pushes him up the list.

Have serious faith in Rioli Jnr. making it. Has been asked to play in a very different role to what he is used to so far in his career. New coach playing him in a less demanding and structured way (ie. more freedom) could see a huge step up. Too many good footy judges in the NT rate him for the talent to not be there. We just need to get it out.

Cumberland is an all round smart footballer. He plays with a purpose around the ball I have not often seen in young players. Has the skill and footy brain to be an absolute matchwinner in the Steele Sidebottom mould. No doubt he is cocky, but that suggests confidence. It is all in his court right now. He becomes what he wants to become in terms of AFL footballer.

I was rapt when we drafted Sonsie, thought it was the steal of the draft. I am mildly concerned now. He has all the tools and ability, but there is a spark that seems to be missing. Maybe a confidence thing, I am not sure. I really hope he emerges. This is a gutfeel type assessment. Is it just hunger pangs, or gastro?

Coulthard strikes me as being the most AFL ready player on this list behind Gibcus. I do not doubt his talent. I wonder though if we really have a spot for him unless he can be more versatile and maybe play some midfield. We seem to have quite a few small forward types on the list, but versatility seems to be the key with our recent drafting. Coulthard will be an AFL player, but we might find in time it is with another team.

Finally, I am not slapping Dow or Ralphsmith down just yet. Dow has some key ability components but is yet to show us if he has the full package. No doubt he needs to show it soon, but like the club, he is worth keeping around to see what might emerge. Ralphsmith faces the problem of being half bank flanker and possibly lacking the ability to play anywhere else. Maybe wing? The issue is the modern HBF is highly skilled and has the ability to have significant impact on the game. Hugo hasn't taken that step yet.

Our development coaches have a lot to work with. So many possibilities for players to step up and make it.

We need at least 8 of our kids having their best ever season for us to move the dial in the right direction. Hopefully injuries are kept to a minimum. As I don’t see any of our core taking their game to the next level besides a Bolton or Hopper (who was well below my expectations).

Gibcus and Brown are the two I really want to see play all year.

When you go through the list there are a number of players who have a lot of potential. We don’t have to have all of them succeeding but we should expect that some will.
This is where a a lot of media people are missing the boat in their assessment of Richmond imo. Our youth has had more limited exposure than most and so the “experts” don’t take them into account.

I would put them into a few categories

High potential but also could be bust - Cumberland, Sonsie, Gibcus (injury only)

Look like footballers but will they come on? - Banks, Brown, Clarke, Ryan, Bauer

Playing for their career and might still make but also may not- MRJ, Dow, Ralphsmith

Diamonds in the rough? Wait and see- Coulthard, Trezise

No idea because haven’t really seen them- Green, Campbell, Smith, McAuliffe, Fawcett

We also have Koschitzke who is basically the same age as Ryan. (However I see Ryan as the ruck who will eventually replace Nank not as a forward). I think Jack Ross is also around that age.

My concern with our lists here is that so many of them have already had chances in the big time and for one reason or another have come up short.
Yze has a very big job in front of him.
Mcauliffe and Tresize might be surprise packets but teams like Hawthorn are well in front of us with exposed form of young players.

Achilles, the vast majority of kids take time and grow into their career. The ones that make an impact straight away are far more the exception than the rule.
“Coming up short” can be pretty subjective early in a career for most kids

Yep. Totally get that. I'm just worried that we don't appear to have many who are obviously headed for the top tier, despite some strong draft picks. These are the ones you can very often see in their first two seasons. The jury is still out on about 15 youngsters.
