PSD and Rookie Draft

Stylo said:
I think the main knock on him is that he doesn't get nearly enough of the ball. Will have to work on getting to more contests. But he's certainly got some talent, the club would know him pretty well from his AIS placement too

and very outside, he's a project at this early stage

Perfect for a rookie pick. Got some good attributes but missing some pieces.

Sure, there's still some talent out there. But you know something, I think we're going to ignore all the juniors again, something tells me there will be quite a number of 100 gamers emerging from the rookie draft this year.

I think Thomas is the only one we were planning to take. Now with 2 older guys one of which is ready to play I hope we avoid because we've added those mature bodies anyway.

My preferences of the leftovers

Guys I thought would go main draft.

1. Eli Templeton (obviously ::))
2. Dwayne Wilson
3. Nick Bourke
4. James Battersby

Guys I thought were a genuine crack at main draft

5. Ben Sokol
6. Nick Favretto
7. Cameron Conlon
8. Darcy Cameron
9. James Toohey
10. Isaiah Miller
11. Alex Spina
12. Darcy Hourigan
13. Charlie Cameron

Guys I thought would be worth a rookie selection

14. George Hampson
15. Campbell Combe
16. James Tsitas
17. Alex Saunders
18. Louis Herbert
19. Steven Edwards
20. Luke Reynolds
21. Clayton McCartney
22. Francis Watson
23. Richard Bourne
24. Kane Lambert
25. Chris Cain
26. Aaron Heppell
27. Josh Miller
28. Michael Wood
29. Tim Kelly

If we can nab 1 from each group I'll be over the moon.

1. Templeton/Wilson (I have both top 20 and have some class)
2. Sokol/Favretto (Midfielders with some size are worth a punt)
3. Combe or Tsitas (Tough little mids that don't have any x-factor but can play are worth a try in the rookie draft - probably take Matt Thomas)

(Conlon I think will go before our 1st pick)

Just the mere thought of Thomas is like a recurring Lonergan nightmare but I'm resigned to the eventuality.

Then there's Batsanis, a likely candidate for a rookie selection (I prefer this to Thomas given he hasn't been tested at the highest level).

As far as the juniors are concerned, I like your A grade list but would be inclined to put Tsitas in that group. His profile is befitting of a speculative success story and represents a perfect rookie opportunity.

Chris Cain or Kane Lambert would also be good pick-ups, and a project tall wouldn't hurt either.

Yeah Lonergan should have been a lesson to not worry about scrappy players that don't fit our kicking profile because we won't actually want to use them and when we have to they're a liability. I'd rather play a raw kid and have them be a liability.

Batsanis won't get taken. Same goes Bathie. Wish I could say the same for Thomas. :help

There not really in ranking order. Just grouped them where I thought would happen to them last night. Tsitas is certainly the type who would succeed as a rookie. Same goes Combe. Similar type.

Hopefully Conlon or Darcy Cameron are there. Even Hourigan gives us something different to what we have if we can get any of them fit would be a coup. Toohey is the other I like as a KPD.

Cain I wasn't a fan of getting but that was as a main list player. As a rookie he's worth a punt. Same goes Lambert. I'd probably lean Lambert who has a bit more upside at his age. 21 isn't he?

Really just hoping Templeton, Wilson or Battersby are there at pick 12.

any thoughts on Sully from Geelong?
i havent seen him play but he sounds a good type who has had a year or two of senior footy.

I knew I forgot one. Another who'd be better than getting Thomas.

Anyone know roughly which pick we're likely to have? Obviously no compensation picks bumps us up the order, but I've got the feeling GWS (and maybe Gold Coast) don't get rookies.

With only 60 odd players drafted , I think it shows what all recruiters thought of the depth in 2013.....

IMHO after looking at a bit of the vision of this years lot , I think it may be a pretty average year....in saying that not unhappy with our lads

Exactly what they said about 2005, and that turned out to be a bumper crop. There's still value to be had even in the rookie draft, just gotta be one step ahead of the competition.

Think you're pretty spot on with your rookie picks.
Going on last years effort - Petterd, Lonergan, Stephenson before Williams - think it's a fair bet we go Thomas, Batsanis before any thought of a possible junior at pick 38 and there is a chance we take Bathie as our last pick.
Don't think Cain, Lambert or a project tall will be there for us. Will all be gone by pick 38.

is there a pre season draft and which teams are in it? Is there any point of a PSD now you can sign up delisted free agents?

There is a PSD but I don't know what teams are in it. It will always have a use for players who delist themselves ala Jed Lamb who will go to GWS, and players would were decent but overlooked for the ND.

What do those in the know reckon of Isaiah Miller of Bendigo?

Ultra attacking rebound defender who loves kicking and bounding down the ground. His kick to handball ratio is up there with Grant Birchall & Bachar Houli, so he obviously presents as a dangerous play maker. As to why he didn't get drafted? Perhaps the competition just ticked a few more boxes. Darcy Byrne-Jones edged him out for defensive reasons, the other draftees in Scharenberg & Kolodjashinij simply have all the tools to play in that role, ultimately you want a high production guy yielding midfielder-like stats. This is where Miller probably lacks a little, at the carnival his numbers were too low to make him a bankable alternative, his TAC output was well up on his 15 possessions at the champs, but there could also be some uncertainty about his ability to win the contested ball. I definitely think he's worth a rookie spot, but I'm not sold on the fact that we would be interested given Hardwick & Frank like shut-down defenders first and foremost. Most clubs love their attacking defenders but it's also a position which demands an exceptional pedigree. We were lucky with Houli because he had significant runs on the board, other teams have had to use first rounders to secure the elite rebounders.

In our sights for the rookie/PS drafts might be a couple of junior 191-194cm mobile talls, with possibly a mature mobile tall too.

We were lucky with injuries in 2013, and a mature mobile tall kpp could fill in some short term lack of depth.
The junior mobile talls could be given a year or two in the VFL to show if they have any talent worth persevering with.

Whilst I don't disagree that we need some additional talls, I think it's important to realise that the success rate of KP players in the rookie draft is very low indeed. This is the point where I'd be inclined to rejig the rankings a little and focus on player types who naturally lend themselves to rookie success stories. Big bodied midfielders would be high on the agenda, especially those who stand a realistic chance of playing senior football in two years. The rookie draft must be like a well oiled machine with rapid turnover, calls must be made early which lends itself to a quantity over quality paradigm. For talls, I think you have to grab them in the first & second round, in the meantime I'd be more focused on ensuring we leave no stone unturned in getting Elton, McBean, Griffiths, Astbury & McIntosh up to speed. If we go down the mature-age route then Thorp or Tippett could be worth a look, both would be appear to be AFL-ready in 2014.
