PRE 2017 Phantom Draft

Bullus if you like and have trouble filling the minor teams we could take 1 each if you like and just get it going, They are not going to have a pick until the 3rd round and if somebody wants to take it up once we are on the way we can just add them

Ok, I've allocated the minor teams. Turk has Hawks, I have Bombers & Spook can do Port.

Pick 1. Brisbane

Luke Davies-Uniacke

This basically came down to 2 players, Cameron Rayner & Davies-Uniacke. In the end I went for the safe option as I'm not yet convinced Rayner can transition to the midfield as some have suggested. Given Rayner ran an 11.10 beep in TAC testing and also withdrew from the running events at the combine I'm taking absolutely no chances. Rayner also looked sluggish at school boy level where he refused to chase and apply any defensive pressure, this has me slightly concerned about his work ethic. Talk of Dusty MKII is also a long bow as Dusty was running 14 beeps with very little conditioning.

Now for a bit more about Davies-Uniacke. First of all I think he has all the hallmarks of an elite midfielder. Coming in at 187cm he's about the same height as Dusty & Danger and also possesses that raw breakaway pace that the game's elite regularly put on show. He's also a big game player as evidenced in Dandenong's stunning 63 point turnaround. In this match he racked up 33 high impact possessions with 21 being contested. Whilst his state form wasn't brilliant he was in the top handful of players in the All-Stars match and also racked up 22 possessions against AFL listed opponents in the annual AIS versus VFL game. Skill wise he ticks all the boxes, he's strong overhead so will be a handful resting forward, he can kick effectively on both sides & can also run and spread when necessary. In the TAC he averaged 24 touches & 1 goal a match and backed that up with 21.8 disposals & 0.8 goals for Vic Country.

It may well turn out others like Rayner & Stephenson become better players but picking flankers and outside players with the first pick is too often fraught with danger. In Brisbane's situation playing the odds and picking a purebred midfielder is the only prudent course of action.

$1.01 Collect on that one Bully. ;D

That pick was more obvious than me taking McGrath last year.

But I like it. LDU is fail safe.

This is the really hard decision that Brisbane need to make and i have thought about wich i would take and its changed 83 times in 83 days
My heart tells me Rayner and the X factor as well as the 'Upside' etc etc - Its abit like do you go with that Sexy girl you meet at the club or the Nice girl that you know will stay loyal to you.

But i think you have made the correct choice for where Brisbane is atm and selected the loyal girl that will stay with you through thick and thin
where that sexy girl may find the bloke at work more sexy than you and decide to leave.

For Brisbane in 2018 - LDU is the best fit

Good choice mate

Dont ask me tomorrow

The joy of picking for Freo is that have holes everywhere so I can just pick the best available. Having said that mids are still key so,

Freo
Pick 2- Paddy Dow
Height: 184cm Weight: 78kg

Damn my first ever Phantom I have missed! Must be thinking about the kids even less than usual. ;D

Not too late. You can choose between Hawks, Port & Essendon. In fact you can have a couple if you want.

Blues pick Cam Rayner. I get the concerns about his tank but in every other department he's brilliant. Quick, powerful, skillful, wins plenty of ball, takes a good grab and kicks goals. Carlton are still in a position that they will have early draft picks for another couple of years yet, as well as pick 10 this year, with which to stock up on pure mids. Here they just get the best talent.

Thought about Brayshaw here.

Thought about Stephenson here.

But you have to take Adam Cerra.

Closest thing I’ve seen to Pendles in all my years. At 186 cm and 85kg you are looking at a ready to go prospect in 2017. Rated by Eastern Ranges coach Darren Berwick as the equal of any prospect he’s seen come through the Ranges program (Jon Patton, Tom Boyd and Christian Petracca) it’s not hard to see how his game translates to AFL. With an already established inside/outisde game Cerra just doesn’t make bad choices with the ball. Excels in traffic, just finds a way to get out of trouble. Glides with time on his side. Cerra is someone you want kicking the ball as much as possible. Weights the ball perfectly. Doesn’t drill the ball, just gets it there. If it wasn’t for a knee injury last year that cause him to miss most of 2016, he’d talked about as a pick 1. Can play anywhere to start with. Went forward for a half a game this year and kicked 3.5 with 10 marks and 3 contested grabs. The only concern you have is his body, the knee and shoulder aren’t related by it is his only concern. I’d still take the punt. Cerra's best is that of an A grade AFL mid who doesn’t waste the ball. And that’s what the Roos need. Desperately.

26.4 touches, 15 contested, 6.8 marks, 1.3 goals & 6 clearances a week this year at TAC level.

Ready to go.

I like brayshaw , Personally i think freo might go Cerra or Brander here but Brayshaw looks to be a Gem.

Dow & Brayshaw will be a very good addition to Fremantle's Midfield

Collingwood are happy to select Jaidyn Stephenson at pick six. We think he is a speedy risk taker who will thrill the magpie faithful for years to come.

Saints are gutted Brayshaw went ahead of expectation.

Pick 7 - Darcy Fogarty - exciting big bodied player who we expect to.play forward but who we hope can have spurts in the midfield. We liken him to the Bont. Considered Bonar here too but we think Fogarty is a similar player without the risk of Bonar

Pick 8 - Aaron Naughton - we considered Brander here for his flexibility. However we couldn't go past Naughton who intercepts everything and provides good drive out of defence.

Pick 9 - Bulldogs

Jarrod Brander

Brander was the favourite for the no.1 pick at the start of this year after his underage performances in 2016. His class makes him the most talented tall in the draft and one that could easily turn out to be this years best. His inconsistency in 2017 has seen him drop below a handful of midfielders this year but if it returns as he matures the Doggies have a bargin

The Baggers have a tough choice here at pick 10 between two players we thought would be gone by now. Aiden Bonar is a tantalising athletic prospect with genuine footy skills, however we've gone for the sure thing, a leader who can play on-ball or half-back, and even get forward and kick a goal. Tall, fast, evasive, nicely-skilled, a high-quality all-round package.

Pick 10 - Nick Coffield.

Great choice for Carlton i think, Personally i was expecting Coffield to be gone to the Pie's at #6

Good Haul for the Tankers with Rayner & Coffield and that would start to make their midfield a good midfield in 2-3 years
Cripps,Curnow,SPS,Coffield,Kennedy,Rayner all young and coming through togeher

With the 11th pick in the 2017 National Draft The GWS Giants select Charlie Constable. Rated him at #5 can't believe he was there at 11.

Pick 12:

Adelaide choose Patrick Naish, 183cm 74kg

We like Patrick's run and carry, class, smarts, long kicking and ability to hit the scoreboard. While we haven't been able to do internal testing as yet, our biomechanics expert believes he has a good power ranger-stance potential, which is the icing on the cake.

14. The West Coast Eagles selects Aiden Bonar (18 years old, 189 cm, 87 kg, onballer/forward, Dandenong U/18). With a lack of grunt in the middle, the Eagles hope Bonar over time can play predominantly as an onball bull
