Paddy Dangerdive

Another big difference between dusty and clanger is that dusty is loved by all tiger supporters, however clanger is disliked by a lot of geelong supporters i know, a bit of a flog is the term widely used

Doubt he’s too popular with Adelaide supporters either

I was thinking if I was to choose a top ten of just mids or mid/forwards could I make a list taking only one player per team before I would pick Dangerfield?

I reckon I’d go pretty close...
(at least 5 anyway, no problem)

Dusty

Fyfe

Cripps

Bontempelli

Mitchell

Neale

Yeo

Greene

Rowell

Oliver

Maybe even Pendlebury, Boak and Kennedy (swans) even though they’re 32
(Rampe?... no probably not)
My list
Neale isn't a good midfielder.
Mitchell is a dud.

The best midfielders in the comp
Are Dusty,.....then daylight
To Fyfe
Penderbury
Cripps and Oliver are good but butcher's with the ball.
Bompmytelly. Good but hasnt improved from 2 yrs ago. The GWS beating has effected him.
Petrecca. Must be a no news week
Yeo, is good but too much difference between his good to bad games.

Fair enuf!

My list was more ‘would I pick them before Clanger?’

(Mitchell and Kennedy nearly won the 16 gf by themselves. Mitchell was pretty darn good on that big stage. don’t agree he’s a dud)

I don't know if it was totally Scott's decision to play Danger forward. But, you have to remember that the consensus at half time was that Geelong should have been further ahead. Possibly trying to set up some mismatches in the forward line to stretch Richmond's defence, which, if Geelong had continued to win the contested ball, might well have been seen as a master stroke.

I understand why you would do it but I would have erred on the side of trying to maintain the clearance advantage for maybe 5 minutes and then make the switch, not do it from half time as things can, and do, change after the long break. Add to that the lift Richmond got from Dusty's goal and that we were getting contested ball more on our terms late in the second quarter and it looks less like a good move.

But, hindsight is a wonderful thing and it is so easy to say this now.

DS
I don’t disagree.
to go further...

I watched the game again today () and took notice particular in the third quarter. Clanger was terrible. It went into their forward line enough times to create opportunities and he just didn’t make much contest and was pretty much ineffectual. It’s not like it didn’t go near him at all just because “he was on the forward line”. I don’t get why the media think he would have been much better in the mid... he did nothing in the 4th.
I reckon Scott is being blamed for Clanger’s poor output tbh... when he did go into the mid, sure we had some momentum, but this bloke is supposed to be a “superstar” and the score was only 2 points the diff. Game was in the balance considering his reputation of ‘the best player in the comp’ as I heard one of the commentaries call him at that very stage of the game. For the best player in the comp, he did nothing yet again. Heck, for a good ordinary player, he did nothing. For the whole second half I thought he was a passenger to be honest. Players like Duncan were miles better. A one armed Ablett was better.

From the outside the Geelong group look a serious, intense bunch. Not many pests and larrikins in there.

I remember this was mentioned in the media when Dalhaus was dispatched down there as a much needed injection of extroverted fizz.

You can also see this in body language on the field. When Danger kicks a goal, celebrations are muted. His team mates respect him, but don’t seem to love him.

Danger, no humour chip. Selwood, good leader, no humour chip. Ablett, great player, no humour chip. Menengola, Duncan, Blicavs, Stewart.

None of these blokes are knockabout guys.

The Cats’ dress up Mad Monday is an obvious, somewhat stiff way of compensating, but even they kinda just stand around smiling at how witty they all are.

Look at C Scott - possibly the most self-serious coach in the AFL. This filters down to everyone beneath him. Has to.

Compare to Hardwick, a man who has learned the art of humility through failure. He has his faults, not least of which was his startling attitude to COVID earlier this year, but he owns his mistakes every time. Makes good on them.

Compare to Jack, McIntosh, Smiley Edwards, Broad, Bakes, Jayden the Pest, Dusty. The team oozes personality.

You can’t Raise The Fight without passion. True camaraderie. That’s why we kick back from 22 points down in the second. Not many teams have what we have.

Agree completely.

It's why I knew we were on the right path as soon as Rance and Jack joined Cotchy in the leadership group.

Sorta "half agree". He is a mid fielder, for some unknown reason Scott played him as a forward ( as he did last year a bit against you guys) last Sat. May have had a crap game IF he had played midfield anyway, BUT he should have played there full time.
I agree his finals ( nit just the gf) have soured his rep no doubt. He is a "burst" player, and generally the media and fans go ga ga over players bursting from the pack etc, thats what he is know for. He has quick reflexes and reads the game well, thats his main strength i reckon.
Lets not hide behind the media.
He went to the midfield in the last qtr when we were only up by 2pts. We increased it by another 29pts with him in the centre.
Not a defensive bone in his body.
The only touches i remember him having is that *smile* free kick in the centre and that shocking/panic kick outside def 50 that went straight to baker, who hit Riewodlt 40 out.
He failed as s midfielder and as a forward he was Josh Bruce quality

Yep.
Also doesn't hurt that our blokes have learnt that you can't win everything, every time. Sometimes it's more important to simply do as best ya can n enjoy the fact that you n your team mates are in there having a crack.
There's a massive amount of scrutiny and pressure from outside around elite sports clubs and the last place a player needs to see it coming from is his team mates during a game.
Our mobs doing the shared work load n support one another game way better than any other team over the last few years n it's obvious, not only in our results but the way a couple of clubs have shattered after being torched by us.
Would not surprise me in the least if the Moggies fall flat on their faces next year after all the song n dance of the fairy tale finish for Scablett n Dangerclench's first ever flag.
Blokes like Clench, Duck n the Tommyhawk are seriously intense n unforgiving plus they've had a bunch of moderately reasonable players had best ever seasons this year. With very little in the way of fresh new youngsters coming through there's a musty smell starting to permeate this mob, no surprise if it's all gone rotten next year.

Let's hope danger & geelong go the way of adelaide & gws, after being savaged by Tigers.
Looks like they are trying to buy a premiership at the moment with the old recruits to compliment their old team.

The free against Cotchin to give him a goal was pathetic, best thing he did for his team was take out Vlastin, sad for me as he is my favourite player, but still didn't get them the win, just gave them a sniff. Dangerfeild, like many players in the league is a flopper and a stager, Only RFC cops it for diving or off the ball hits, Selwood rubbed Bakers head into the turf in the last qtr and the comment from Bruce was the captain is still fighting on, well if that was Lynch, the internet would meltdown with haters. Lets hope we see a 3peat.

Depends on whose ratings you are talking about I suppose.

Plenty of fans of other sides will tell you he is a butcher with the ball who has been gifted two Norm Smiths that he didn't deserve.

I don't think you will ever find a unquestionable, unanimous undisputed champion amongst the fans because to be brutally honest, most of them have no idea what they are talking about most of the time.
Disgraceful isn't it? All them flog supporters of other teams that simply have no idea.

I reckon most would have easily put Dangerfield in the Top 5 before the Finals. After the GF performance and some focus on his overall finals performance since, I reckon he may have dropped out in the eyes of many
The great thing about Dangerfield is that he is now etched in AFL folklore. When Dusty kicked his last goal in the GF that left Dangerfield sprawljng on the turf, it will be constantly shown as a highlight of our great game, like Jezzas "you beauty" mark and Blight's 80 metre torp at Princes Park. What a way to be on the highlight reels adfinitum.

That moment must have given Dangerfield a sense of deja vu.
He is similarly commemorated in the last goal of the 2019 Preliminary Final.
As Prestia is slotting it through, Dangerfield is lying sprawled on the turf courtesy of a glorious Tom Lynch hip-and-shoulder.

Mate, I liken it to the military... there are larrikins, misfits and lifers.... but in the good units, when the switch is flicked they are the hardest hitting, well drilled team you’ll ever be hit by. It’s a delicate balance of personality, control and figuring out what “works” for that group.
Very much easier said than done
