Noah Balta - Welcome to Tigerland

This bloke is built a bit like Alex Rance but plays nothing like him. His hands, his marking, is elite. He can catch cleanly from out of position with the meat of his thumbs. AFL elite talent in this respect.

He is in most respects a small. A running back in the making. For now. Natural footy smarts not all there. He can learn mostly behind the ball. He looks quicker than he tests because he is a timely runner. He hits the fall on the bit. He's still got something left. (See Bachar Houli.)

He's just a lad and lacks physical confidence so when that comes he may may reveal entirely elite aerial game. Meanwhile we should get him running. HBF and run. Zone off for the aerial game sometimes. But run.

he had only one spilled mark yesterday - very surprising - and that was due to doubt. Very sticky mark.

When he blooms he's probably a forward or a new ruck type. Really interesting prospect.
This. Called it day 1, Big Jack.

When he blooms he's probably a forward and a new ruck type.

Hogan is in good physical shape and in good form and when right is a seriously good player
for Noah to take his scalp the way he did , massive , it was like a total dismantling

We do seem to like him kicking out of defence , they are a bit random and clearly beats all comers on distance and they aren't floaters like Short's long kicks can be
It would be good to know the coaches thoughts

Just rewatched the 2020 grannie tonight and the move of Balta to on ball late in the second term was a game changer and one reason we got back into that game. He was superb in that second half.

Balta has done his time down back - time for him to play wing, ruck forward and let him run wild destruction on the opposition defenders.

I've been re-watching the 2019 season and i just watched the Freo game when Nank got injured and the following match against the hawks. Balta was played as a ruck/forward and did some amazing stuff which bodes well for this year if they release him from the backline.
Genuinely excited about Noah’s prospects this year.

Back / Forward / Ruck

He’ll feature everywhere
I agree

I would love to see Balta played foward and seriously believe he has the potential to become that Beast FF
I see alot of young Fraser Gherig in Balta
Same height, weight, size,Leap and athleticism as the young Gherig
IMO Balta will eventually become a champion KPF

Leysy's been thinking a bit more on this - Whilst Balta will no doubt find it harder in the forward line where he needs to think more and has question marks on his forward nouse i.e. when/where to lead etc.

It is still well worth a try.

We have coverage down back - Tarrant, Grimes with Miller & possibly Gibcus and maybe Biggy coming through and needing opportunity. We only really have the Great Samson as a tall forward in the wings. It will really balance our talls out.

If he can make a go of it forward/ruck the options for Hardwick are also plentiful i.e. It will help Jacks game now he is better suited to the 3rd defender, his on-ball/ruck work in bursts could be real game changers and his big kick can unlock defences.

Big forwards are also harder to get.

If it doesn't work (very possible) we move him back from whence he came.
Nice obs Leysy. Whilst I do love the thought of an impenetrable defence (how *smile* good and balanced is a Tarrant/Balta/Grimes/Vlas/Broad/Baker) Balta is a wildcard elsewhere that could really disrupt other teams plans.

Liked his efforts today around forward and even showed some handy efforts around the ground when rucking.

Love watching the lad kick through the footy, haven't seen him do it often enough with him in defensive 50.

If Balta is the answer up forward our long term future looks a lot brighter.
Massive highlight from today.
Was a real presence in the forward line today, I liked the pressure he applied too.

I was against Balta moving forward. I thought he didn’t have the smarts to play that role plus it would weaken our backline. On today’s performance looks like I was wrong.
He is Frazer Grehig as forward
He is Kouta the ruck Rover
He is Harry Taylor as a defender
I've like him since the day we drafted him.
Pity we didn't do a Shazam in that draft and Draft Oscar Allen or Liam Ryan instead of Griffens part 2
Balta will have his ups and downs learning the craft of playing KPF. But I believe very strongly that he will prove to be an absolute gun forward ... a champion for the Yellow and Black

Yeah he was dominant. Scary how good he might be.

Kouta had his breakout when 22 y.o.

Reckon he'll be a success up fwd. The thing with Balta up fwd is we don't lose much in the pressure fwd area of our game as he's pretty quick can chase and tackle.
reminds me of Richo except Balta kicks straighter
Wow, I didn't know he could do that. Reminded me of Buddy in the first quarter.

Really liked how humble he looked after that beautiful left foot goal as well.

Great young leader in the making.

Is looking more at home in the forward, was a real presence today.
Time to get excited about him as a forward.
I know this is going to be a really BIG call but if he keeps tracking in an upwards direction I do believe that Balta has the potential to be RFC's version of Wayne Carey
Must be one of the strongest players in the AFL in the contest right now. Can leap over tall buildings, has a cannon-like hoof and a top speed to rival anyone - we've got ourselves a absoulte beauty here. Quickly becoming my favourite player.
No idea what this blokes ceiling is… but he could be anything.
Just reading through "isn't a forwards busted clacka" posts after a practice game. Lolz. Looks ready to tear a game to shreds soon.
Looked a man amongst boys at the ground.

He'll kick 8 in a game this year.

He has so many weapons.
Wow. Gun. Still the most similar player to Alex Rance that I've seen down back out of any player drafted over the past decade, but also a gun up forward. I like his attitude towards teammates, and probably has the most passion I've seen in a tall forward since Jack.

In other words, Balta can cover either Rance or Jack.

How good is that?!
Whilst the move forward was always worth a try he's made the move forward more seamless than Leysy thought.

Think we're not yet close to hitting his ceiling. He's going to make opposition coaches very nervous this year.
Proved me wrong as forward.
Proved me right.
Future key forward problem solved minus one.
Changes everything. I’m not sure Jack makes it back in the side automatically. We will see.
Just a reminder of the tenor of posts during last year's pre-season and first few rounds.

Talk of offloading him has always been senseless.
Same as moving him forward, no surprise that he is playing his best footy after being left in the one spot for 10 weeks.

Continuity is king.

I've always favoured the Kouta comparison. Bullock of a bloke with surprising agility and will give you a definite pause for thought before standing in front of him when he's at full-tilt. Still don't think you make him a forward, any more than Rance would have made one. I'd love to see him get free up the ground more, and even hit the scoreboard more, but from a defensive position.

Richmond fans: *smile* hell! We can't take a mark forward of centre!
Also Richmond fans: Balta's marking everything. He must stay in defence!

Much better aerialist than Rance, and significantly bigger man. The comparisons have to stop.

hmmm - changed me o’l mind I have - defence with the odd time on the ball if we need it is my view now.

We need to find a partner in crime for Ryan long term, hopefully Lynch can come back short term.

As long as JR draws breath on a footy field, and until Gibbo calf offal stem cells bind,

notorius must stay back,

But then, yeah, hes our freak of nature CHF making nick reiwoldt look like josh jenkins, and jim jess, clinton king

Anyone who thinks otherwise has brain problems and should *smile* off and barrack for Gold Coast

It's a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. The backline is a unit and play best when everyone knows their role. If we move Balta forward then everyone moves up the chain of command and I worry that would upset the balance just as we're starting to look strong in defence again.

I'd prefer us to give him an entire preseason to learn and adapt before committing to positional changes.

Yeah, I'm talking next year. Young, Himmelberg, Gibcus back. Lynch, Samson, Balta forward.

Gibcus forward.
You heard it first here.
Marking prowess waisted in the backline.
JackR8 reckons he’s the most athletic footballer he’s seen at Punt Rd.
Balta who?
