Riot-kiss couple to embrace Melbourne Jane Holroyd
June 20, 2011 - 8:22AM
After they're knocked to the ground by riot police, Perth man Scott Jones kisses his Canadian girlfriend Alex to comfort her - a moment now immortalised in that world-famous photo.
Australian aspiring stand-up comic Scott Jones, otherwise known as one half of the Vancouver riot kiss couple has been invited to rub shoulders with ex-British PM Tony Blair in Melbourne next month.
Mr Jones and his Canadian girlfriend Alex Thomas were photographed in a loving embrace amid the mayhem of street riots in Vancouver last week, following the championship loss by the Canadian city’s ice hockey team to a Boston rival.
The striking photograph went viral and the couple have now signed up with celebrity agent Max Markson in a bid to make the most of their moment in the spotlight.
Mr Markson said the couple will visit Australia next month and he had invited them to the Sofitel Hotel, where Tony Blair will be speaking in late July as part of his tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Jones and Ms Thomas were out on Vancouver’s streets when they became trapped between riot police and the angry mob of hockey supporters.
Speaking to Channel Nine on Saturday, Mr Jones said that when the police ’’charged at us and then Alex fell over, I went back for her, they kept hitting us with shields, I was talking to her, just trying to calm her down, kissing… helps to calm her as well’’.
Ms Thomas, who received minor leg injuries, said that as the police bore down, she was determined to cling to Mr Jones. ’’I’m going to hang on to him,’’ was her prevailing thought.
Mr Markson said he had been contacted by Mr Jones’s Perth-based father Brett because the couple had been struggling with media interest from outlets in Australia, the United Kingdom and United States.
Brett Jones said had himself been the subject of interview requests from all over the world: ‘‘It’s just amazing how much interest this picture has generated.’’
The couple are about to embark on a holiday, culminating in a trip back to Australia next month.
Scott Jones, 29, lived in Melbourne for about 10 years before travelling to Canada, where he had been working as a bartender for about six months. He has been seeing Ms Thomas for about seven months.
Mr Markson said the publicity could be the perfect kick-start for Mr Jones’s comedy career.
‘‘Melbourne is the perfect place to get a stand-up career going,’’ Mr Markson said. He is yet to confirm any comedy gigs and Mr Scott has not been invited to upstage Mr Blair at the Sofitel.
‘‘No, they have just been invited to eat,’’ Mr Markson said.
The couple were caught up in riots after leaving the ice hockey arena where the NHL’s Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 to win the Stanley Cup.
