No matter the rule, coaches always find a way to defend against its intent. Ben Dixon argued teams will clog a 45-metre radius from the man with the free, forcing him to kick long. Maybe. Would leave defences vulnerable out the back if you can get it there. But they'll come up with something. Guaranteed.
Let's look at what we're currently working with. The 'lanes' David King pointed out that Sydney used - all players keeping their distance from each other, making it tough for our zoning defenders to cover for each other - spread our defence and cut us up. How do we combat that? If the opposition has as many good kicks as Sydney, it's tough. Better one-on-one defenders, particularly in the air, perhaps.
Clearly the new rules allow for a lot more kick-mark ball movement. We don't like that. Teams that mark the ball a lot against us often win. So how do we deny it? Maybe Dixon's right: we crowd the area to stop that first chip, or the next one. That's a lot of running, though. It's different to our rolling zone that moves in a coordinated wave across the ground. Sydney showed you can pick through that. We probably need to employ the tactic a bit ourselves. Long kicks to outnumbered contests and scrapping like hell is so 2017-20.
Leading forwards are back. Because the kicker can get clean air in front of himself, and zoning defences are stretched, it's hard for an interceptor to cut off the pass, especially when your best interceptor is in the stands faking a two-month knee injury.
How are our leading forwards? Are Jack and Tom getting separation? Do we lace them out if they do? We sat a few passes up going inside 50 on Saturday, not so much to leading players, but to guys dropping in the hole 40 out. I'm looking at you, Lambert. And Caddy. Pass floats in the air, giving defender time to come over the top and spoil. That's turnover and fast break city.
So, we need to kick better inside 50, and we also need another marking target. I know some believe the lack of stoppages negates the need for a second ruck, but I think we need another bloke who can take a grab up forward. A threat. To spread the defence, so we can kick hard and flat to one-on-ones, not high and slow to Tom v 3.
In an ideal world, Chol would seize the opportunity and compete consistently with the intent we've only seen sporadically. We can't count on it, but we should put it to him. CJ is only a few weeks away, and we know he will compete with the requisite effort, and he's a fantastic mark, but he doesn't move or kick as well or have ground game like Mabs. Nevertheless, he's probably going to be our guy.
The other option is Clark Balta. Noah Kent. I don't like using our key defender as second ruck. Miller's blisteringly quick. And looks to have come on significantly. Do we give him a crack alongside DTLD and unleash the beast?
What else?
Half back. Can we break a line to save ourselves? Well may we say, "where the *smile* is Houli?" because for all their strengths, Baker and Short do not come through the line and slice 'em up the middle. Why do you think Dimma threw the Hail Eggy?
Stack, Stack, my kingdom for a Stack. (At both ends, woah is us.) Maybe we reinvent The Prince at half back. But he's become hesitant with the ball and the position requires decisiveness. Shai could go there if he can't get a kick elsewhere. But we need him to get a kick elsewhere.
Pace. No slowies. Bye, Cads. Seeya Aarts. Get RCD in. Hugo. We need to find some youth, but what we have is limited. We have no Guldens or Campbells in the magoos but we might find a Warner or Wicks.
Pray Sydney Stack gets physically and mentally fit. Hope MoJu can be as precocious as his recent relatives. (Have you seen that Kozi fella. Woah. That. MoJu has that type of game: hit hard, pick pockets, goal.)
Interesting times. The game's telling us to change. Dimma rightly said it's a gift. Time for growth.
