New Rules

No other dominant premiership team in the history of the game has had the league's execs try & counter their game plans like we have the past few years by introducing a plethora of new rules. The Us vs Them feel has got to be ammunition for the team to drive us to greater heights to try & keep overcoming these rule tampering pricks.

Bit like Wally Lindrum.

I’ve noticed a lot that players will hold back from the mark rather than do the stupid ‘STAND!’ rubbish. Smart play.

however, - i was watching the dogs v pies. A Pies player marks. Dogs player does the smart thing and hangs back behind the mark by at least 5m. The ump crazily and prematurely calls “STAND!” , which the dogs player doesn’t hear and moves up and down to distract and intercept. Dogs player pinged for a 50 despite being well behind the mark. Well behind. Diabolically lamentable umpiring and a tragically inept and incorrect application of the rule and its intent. The irony that the rule is presumably designed to ‘free up’ the game, which happened with the dogs player hanging back off the mark only to be penalised for adjusting to the what the rule was intended for.

this worthless and uselessly thought out rule will be so miserably applied to make an even greater joke of all these lunatic knee jerk changes. The best next change they can do is give SHocking the heave-ho

Only 17 goals tonight, so the new rules haven't helped. Hocking will need to bust out the rules that didn't make the first cut:
  1. Halving the length of the ground
  2. Doubling the length of quarters
  3. Tripling the width of the goals
  4. Quadrupling the points awarded for each goal
  5. Extending the kickout zone to the opposite goalsquare
  6. Mandatory "stand" orders for all defenders during general play
  7. Introducing a multiball
  8. Giving umpires the discretion to award bonus scores
  9. Giving Geelong a seniors discount on scores kicked against them
  10. Minimum skinfold and BMI measurements
  11. Setting a team target of fifteen goals per game and then getting Terry Wallace to coach both sides in every game

The other weird one last night was the umpires throwing the ball up at the centre bounce because teams were warned about not being set properly for the 666. WTF was that?

Well, I just have to congratulate Messrs Hocking and McLaughlin.

From the evidence so far the scoring is up.

The first 2 games of the year are the same fixture as last year and we see Richmond v Carlton - aggregate score -1 from 2020, and Footscray v Collingwood - aggregate score +2 from 2020.

That's right folks, right there, in front of you, incontrovertible evidence of the effectiveness of the new rules - higher scores are here, you cannot deny the overwhelming evidence.

All this . . . and . . . it only took 16 minutes additional game time to achieve with these new rules.

So how do you counter pace and run. You flood.
The only way to stop the sides who can take advantage of the rule will be rain.

12. Limit the Tiges to max 12 players on the field at any given time.

Not sure if it's been mentioned already but the bloody advantage rule is still causing problems. Not sure when or who but out boys were chasing a Blues player when the ump blew the whistle, our guys pull up, Blues keep running, Ump calls Advantage - Goal.

If the is a chance of advantage, don't blow the whistle. If the AFL wants the infringement flagged even if there is advantage, then do what Rugby and Soccer do, Ump can lift an arm up.

We must be the only sport that doesn't halt play when a whistle is blown.

Dimma after winning premiership no 5 with only 12 players.

“yeah look, we thought we’d be disadvantaged playing 6 less than the opposition but we tinkered with a few things and made it work in our favor. Turns out Jack and Tom enjoyed the extra space and Dustin was really able to stand up and carry the load as our sole midfielder and ruckman.”

while i agree that the way advantage is umpires makes it difficult, players need to know that is how it is played, and be aware of the ball and what is happening. the reality now, and it has been this way for years is that play doesnt stop on the whistle, it stops when the person playing the ball stops.

it really appears the league is trying to turn the game into netball or something similar, with constant ball movement up and down the field. that is not what football is, and it will risk turning true fans off the game. whether it brings in more new fans in response remains to be seen.

admittedly it was the 1st game of the year, and early season games are always a bit frenetic, but the game needs contests, not 50mtrs paid against someone trying to defend by moving around on the mark.

Interesting during the Treloar/ Dunkley interview pre game, AT got asked what he thought of the new rules, candidly said 'I hate it, its shocking' or words to that effect, scathing, then caught himself and his hand over his mouth and said with genuine concern and looked off camera, 'oh will I get in trouble for that?'. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but the vibe is pretty clear.

The flood is back, teams happy to run and gun between the 50's while the team without the ball just roll back into defensive 50.
Watching Freo now 15 players inside there defensive 50.

That 'Standing on the Mark' rule needs to go... sorry if I'm late to the discussion, but after witnessing it last night it's got to go.
Not only is it not going to increase scoring, it's bloody embarrassing, players standing still like statues
The umpires are too slow calling play on when the player with the ball moves off his line. If they must have the stupid rule, they need to call play on as soon as the player with the ball moves.

This will be our problem.
We dont do this but Cats WCE and pies do.
The rule will massively favour them.
Fast short chips to players running into space will be nigh on impossible to stop.
Our defence will have to be concentrated on the d 50 arc and in preventing stoppage clearance .But the kick out from a point will be a serious concern. If we cant stop Blues then top sides will score most times.
Yes...a lot like basketball! Rubbish rule.
After watching the game near the ponsford stand goals I had a great view down the ground. The blues all night tried to spread our defence as much as possible across the whole ground leading to a more uncontested game. They also tried to get a plus one in handball chains and run it forward. Both these tactics has some success and our backline looked disorganised at times. We got better at closing their space as the game went on. We looked rusty and a bit reactionary particularly in the first half. I think we will adjust very well to this in coming weeks As the rustiness disappears. Almost all the finalists have shown some rust signs with the exception of Port Who are. Always early season specialists.

Agree, have to see how the new rules go but will require some adjustments in defence. Will take a little while to sort out and we were rusty. Time to hit our straps after the bye.

Watched from a similar vantage pooint. Yeah, they had an extra mid, but played that person wide so they had an outlet. In the 2nd half we dropped one off from the contest and had a spare in defence. We made that Liam as much as possible. In the first half Liam's opponent would drag him wide or deep to prevent him sweeping for the outlet.

That wide/outlet mid has been used by a few sides. When it does work it leads to the AFBL or the Fast Break League. May as well be NBL. Maybe this is how the Dons get Ben Simmons to play for them.
