My best side from our last 7 Premierships 1967-2019

This is what makes it so hard, I well remember Wiley, he was fabulous. I would put him ahead of Bolton.

DS

Wiley was mercurial and would have been in any side let alone the teams he played in. He'd make my team.

But I am probably biased. He is a West Aussie after all, but he also bleeds yellow and black despite all the time he spent at the Eagles. I saw him on the Tuesday after the 2017 Grandfinal. I still was wearing some Richmond gear having flown home from Melbourne that day, and he stopped to have a chat. He was totally ecstatic that the Tigers had won.

And then I saw him again when the 2017 Premiership Cup came over for a visit. You should have seen the emotion he displayed holding that cup. It was amazing. One of those Richmond people who truely believed he wouldn't see another Tigers flag before he died.

There is no doubt in my mind that Richmond is his true love.

Dylan Grimes replaces Sheedy in the back pocket every day of the week. Then the big V on the back flank.
Sheedy stays for my team. Very versatile spent a lot of time as a decent ruck rover, great hands, footy IQ through the roof and as hard and as fit as anyone in the game. Would easily transition to the modern game.

Wiley was brilliant - I’d have him in.

Completely agree.
Was superb in the finals campaigns.
For the same reason I like Wayne Walsh on a wing.
I would put St Francis on the half back line and Houli misses out.
Rance to CHB , Grimes in the back pocket and Keane on the other back flank.
Big V misses out.
Riewoldt is a genuine star...ahead of Roach.
Pity Richo and M Rioli can't make the side....they well and truly deserve to.

I reckon I'd go with this team, considering the need for the best players but also team balance

B Vlastuin Rance Grimes

HB Keane McGhie Malthouse

C Bourke Martin Wood

HF Wiley Hart Raines

F Bartlett Roach Riewoldt

R Green Weightman Prestia

Int: Cloke Swift Stewart Clay

Imagine any team that had any of Cloke, Swift, Clay or Stewart playing off the bench :D

That's great to hear Streak, thanks very much for sharing. Rob was one of my faves as a boy growing up watching my beloved Tiges. I remember thinking that West Aussies had better skills than Vics, maybe because of the dry, fast grounds in WA. Seeing Monteath, Wiley, Rioli and Mitchell play reinforced this idea. Rob's skills on both sides of his body were amazing. Check out his 3 goals in the 1980 Grand Final! Another game I remember was when we played the Bombers early in 1982 in front of 90,000. We kicked 10 goals in the last quarter to win easily, with Wiley kicking a cool 7 straight! It is actually a great game to watch. If anyone is interested, check out the whole game on the link below.

Given the quality available maybe we should try picking two sides and then have a best of three series. You know it will be one game each plus one drawn.

I was at this game as a kid, was awesome. Wiley was a fantastic player.

I've only really been watching since 1980, so here's my team in that time:

B: Grimes Gaspar Vlastuin
HB: Houli Rance Bowden
C: Deledio Martin Wood
HF: Bartlett Cloke Richardson
F: N.Brown Riewoldt Weightman
R: Ottens Cotchin M.Rioli
I: Knights Edwards Raines Wiley

Roach was my favourite player as a kid, but objectively I think Richo, Jack and Cloke were all better players, and Cloke could second ruck. Lynch better too but can't put him in yet. Couldn't consider Bourke or Keane, I just didn't see enough of them, and it was the end of their careers.

Yes it was an amazing atmosphere wasn't it Spook? I just remember a sea of yellow and black as we kicked goal after goal.

Gee, I love how much skill is on your bench Spook!

Yep, great game and thought we were certain premiers. There was another cracker game against the Roos around that time too.

So did I Antman :-(
Wiley just kicked his second goal of the 1980 GF on Fox. 50 metre left foot kick from the left flank on the boundary line to the City end!

I'm bored so sorry to be a pain if this has already been done to death!

Get to the point BLX!!!

If it is best players in GFs, Bachar is a walk-up start, for Morris or Merv. And you must have 2 rucks in a GF, but who is the second? Mark Lee was a lot of medias BOG in 1980. Balmey's brutality? Cloke? Controversial one is Rancey, if its on GFs only, his spot is shaky. (as a pure CHB in GFs, Robbie McGhie would be considered over Rancey based on GF performances). Cloke was superb, starred, in 75 and 80, but poor in 82. Dan Rioli has to be in the frame.

bloody good effort all up though

I put McGhie in my side because he is in my opinion the only true CHB to pick from. He was a fine player and he wins his spot on merit, but there aren’t a lot of guys to pick from for that position if you are looking for a traditional CHB.

is this best players who played in those flags or players who played best in those flags?

I leaned a bit toward the later, hence having Malthouse on a back flank. I thought he was superb in 1980.

Lee was good in 1980, but Green and Cloke both played very well in a couple of flags, so they got the nod.

Probably my biggest omission was Edwards, and I chucked Keane in because he was a fav of mine when maybe others could have got the nod.

Interestingly, having watched both games umpteen times, I reckon both Houli’s GFs have been overhyped. He did some great things, but he made plenty of mistakes as well, particularly in 2017.

Nice! I thought my mention would be scoffed at, but you're all over it. Its a great point, and an interesting one. McGhie played 2, 2 right?, great GFs at CHB. Cloke played 2 great GFs, super aggressive, kicked goals, at CHF and FP, but obviously Royce is CHF.

So is it:

Best Richmond players who played in those flags
Richmond players who played best in those flags
Richmond plalyers who played best in those flags picked in their posis.

I'd go the second one, but Its tough

Biggest omission Barrot! Before my time but the Old man say he was a phenomenon, Dusty-esque and the bigger the game, the more unstoppable. Edwards huge omission yes. Disagree on Houli, Huge.

I guess I just picked my fave players who played in Premierships hence Merv Keane gets a gig and Cloke misses out. I loved Keane and can't get over the stench of Collingwood with Cloke LOL.

TBH, I didn't have my objective hat on :p but it was fun :)
