Midfield Re-Build

Arguably better than the dynasty build Aces

Back then we got Cotch and Dusty in succession but had to trade in high end quality in Prestia years later. Lambert, Grigg etc diamonds of course

But this build is a can’t miss.

Lalor. Smillie.
Pick 1 2025
Pick 3 2025

Throw in Hotton, McAuliffe, etc

That’s ironclad.

Last night was good start but we still need more. Maybe next year's two early first rounders can net us line breaking mids with good kicking skills.

Speed is a massive concern. Still.
Yep, the modern game is based around both leg speed and ball movement speed. We didn't address that in this draft, so presume it will be a focus in next years draft. That Nth Pick in the first round should be earmarked for the best speedy midfielder there is at the pick.

Our midfield re-birth is on its way.

2026 starting midfield.

Lalor
Smillie
Mcauliffe
Let's just talk about these three. We got bulls, we got beasts, you won't push them around. Centre square mids. And a 195cm midfielder who can kick it with the best of them. Rare. And a brute who wants to hurt you in a tackle and jump on your head. Drafted unicorns. Mean Unicorns.

And in Lalor, we got a grass-fed country boy who has a pumpkin for a head. I haven't seen a pumpkin that great since Charlie Brown.

Yes and No IMO. We haven't addressed leg speed (as there wasn't much to pick from, but I disagree a bit on the ball movement. I think a lot of what makes teams look quick, even if the leg speed might not be there, is the ability to move the ball a long way quickly (long accurate kicking) and the ability to mark, and in those areas we have addressed it.

What made us look so stagnant, and easy to defend against this year, was a lot down to our inability to mark the ball forward of centre. We have addressed that. We've also addressed some of our kicking skills, Smillie, Lalor, Trainor are all good by foot. I have high hopes for some of our younger group as good kicks too that will add to this. Sure leg speed is important, but I think ball movement, and in particular where you control ball movement is so important in todays game.

Brisbane are a good example of this. how much actual leg speed do they have? Not a heap IMO, but what they do is they can control the ball in the air, and move the ball through the air quickly and accurately.

I already feel better about 2025. I'd much rather have the new batch than the collective we traded.
In building for the next flag, it's a no brainer.
