McRae / Player Development

Dyer Disciple said:
I rate McRae in player development, so if he is sent off, he would have to be replaced by quality. Fagan is quality. No problem with that.
And that should be the norm. If person 'A' is the best then go get the best.

I saw McRae being questioned and queried a fair bit in another thread so thought I'd bump this thread to promote some more food for thought/debate.

I was questioning McCrae's viability to stay on that thread and hadn't seen this, but now that I have, I must admit to have not put as much thought into it as you have done DD done and step back from what I said. So thanks DD and it will be interesting to see what Hardwick decides.

According to March our midfield isn't the problem. :-\

March is clueless. Thank god he doesn't make list management decisions. Dunno why he always feels the need to comment on it the first place.

Dunno about clueless, we were lauding him as a visionary when he rated 2008 as a 5/10 in contrast to Wallaces optimistic assesment.

I'd be staggered if March's comments did not come directly from what CC and/or Hardwick have said to him.

He also said a big problem this year was not being able to have our mid-field all out there playing at the same time for whatever reason.

Word around the campfire is that McRae will be heading over to the Roos to rejoin his old teammate Brad Scott.

Whether your name is Cloke Wood, Raines, Taylor, Ottens, McRae or even Deledio, I say if you want to leave, then pack your bags and *smile* off, we don't want half hearted individuals at our club.

At a lower Development level, i.e., Specialist Coaches, I can remember Richo referring to Michael Roach as his best goal-kicking tutor, even though Michael had him for a very short time.

I wonder if the RFC should be recruiting the part-time skills of the likes of:

Michael Roach - Set shot goal-kicking & lead making.

David Cloke - Contested mark taking & the key forward role.

Kevin Bartlett - Crumbing & on-the-run goalkicking.

Kevin Sheedy - Developing skills, reading the game.

Barry Richardson - Reading the game, from a talls perspective.

Michael Green - Premiership rucking.

Francis Bourke - Running through brick walls, parts 1 & 2.  ;)

*smile* Clay - the Full Back position.

Bryan Wood - Making yourself the hinge into attack.

Any other suggestions?

Maybe the RFC could offer these as short-courses?

I see you're a fan of the "Richmond people at Richmond" school of thought Phanto.

Not so sure about that. March has the luxuary of speaking on such, whether people agree or don't, since it is not his word that decides on the list. You don't see Cameron speaking about such.

March's personality is very positive and very much a passionate supporter, Cameron and i would hazard a guess Hardwick, are a lot more cold and clinical. March also chooses his words pooorly now and then, what he says isn't always heard how he intended it I suspect.

Best available, don't see why they all have to be ex richmond people.

In part, yes.

New Tigers surrounded by Old Tigers adds to Culture.

If you have the skills inside the club, great!

If you don't, then you go outside.

I've always believed that the best organisations are able to develop & promote from within.

Conversely, I also believe in the Darwinian theory that diversity brings strength.

Sorry Phantom but all the those fossils are way over it by now. It'll be an awful sight seeing Bartlett runnning around in his shorts & viracose veins tutoring our players.

Well, if you consider that the best contemporary RFC alternative to Bartlett is the senior coach at another AFL club, Matty Knights, then Bartlett in his shorts & viracose veins is an excellent alternative.

Remember, it's his knowledge that we wish to impart to others of our own.

Also consider that this was the role McCrae had in the Brissie Lions premiership teams.

Craig McCrae - small forwards coach.

Too many cooks spoil the broth. Having part-timers coming in would undermine the coach's key messages and game plans.

I'd also be very surprised if the old timers would understand the way the modern game is played given they all have other lives and careers now.

Possibly.

But as Richo says, Michael Roach was his best goal-kicking tutor, even if it was only for a short time.

Richo says a lot of things. Some of them may be relevant to how a modern-day club structures its coaching department, but I'm struggling to think of any.

Of course we need the knowledge but the club can chase other alternatives, alternatives that have just retired who are up to speed on the game. For example last year Carlton swooped on Harvey, to me that's what we need to chase not fossils.
