Maurice Rioli Jnr

You want whoever has that kick to take that kick. MoJu took it 4 times, 2-2 result.

Yeah. But you can see how much untapped ability we have in MRj. That missed kick in last qtr, he just needed someone to tell him to stop and wait as he had nothing forward. Right idea to get it moving but didn’t fully think through it.

He did slow it down though, so he did the right thing. He just poorly executed the kick, was to a 1 on 1 but to the Swans advantage. As you say he had nothing forward and I was pleased that he slowed down and didn't bomb it long, but he executed poorly. That was 1 of only a couple of poor disposals in the 2nd half, after he had kicked the behind. His kicking is aggressive, he just needs to learn to pick the best option and then execute properly.

They were sideways attacking kicks. MRJ needs to keep it simple with his disposals. He was very effective with those disposals yesterday. He's not one you want drilling a kick to a team mate in the middle of the ground surrounded by opponents. I really don't think the coach has asked him to stretch his limitations, on the contrary I felt he tried less to take the game on with the ball in hand (where he has continuously been caught) and focus on first option disposal. And it paid dividends
Yze press conference - we want him ti do more with the ball (or somesuch coachspeak)
THe coach admitted he is great defensively but offensively needs to stretch.
Would Adem say "but on those inboard kicks please Maurice dont do that because you're a shiphouse kick"?
Stretching MR's capability. Lets see whst he can do

As purely a small forward, he’s probably a delist imo. But playing the role he did yesterday, linking up through the midfield, he may be a chance. Fingers crossed
Turns 22 in September. 30 games so far. Mostly underwhelming apart from a cameo or two. Even yesterday’s game that posters rate as his best so far, he made numerous blues that cost the team goals.
This should be his stock standard with a lot of room to improve.

This is MJ’s 4th year on the list. He really needs to find a role and become at least a b+ in it.

He's never really looked like breaking through to me. Some glimpses here and there but could never put it together across a few weeks or even for a whole game. But I reckon yesterday was his best game by far. I loved it. The mistakes are frustrating but the positives far outweighed them yesterday. His pressure was incredible and his run and carry magnificent. The dancing feet and ability to explode away from the packs.

Great game Maurice. Hopefully we can see a lot more of that in the weeks to come.

Yep and he did more with the ball by taking first option, did less (turnovers and goals) when he tried to take chances beyond his capabities. For Maurice in-board kicks only if no opponents around. And yes obviously he needs to stretch offensively, it's been a massive weakness. He took a step forward yesterday, getting into better positions and efficient disposal. Could see his confidence grow. His 2nd half was particular impressive.

Been a long while on since I have posted here, was at last week's game and when MRJ pulled out before the start, all week thought he will be going to the reserves and was surprised he was starting 18 ( this is not me stating he should be in out) , I think we have a coach who can build belief here and is doing so, junior would have thought I'm still in, he backs me, I can believe in myself and have a crack.

Need to see him at the game.

I know it's not possible for some. But, keep in mind that you're only seeing half his value. I just watched the 4th on TV, and it in no way shows what he did.
Nothing I would like more but my pension doesn't stretch to a flight from UK. Maybe there is a benefactor around......!
I fully accept that watching any game on a TV misses out so much of off the ball hard work and thanks for giving me a bit of a get out for my somewhat harsh judgement on MRJ and Mansell for that matter.

17 disposals - Career High
23 Pressure acts
6 Tackles (2 i50m)

Making a real difference.

Can't wait until he turns up in shape for preseason!
I saw him early December. First couple weeks. He was not fit.
Big effort to turn it around. All jokes aside lets hope he is well prepared this november

Clearly his best game for the club .

Love the fact he was brave enough to pass into the middle of the ground and hit the target also hated when he turned it over doing this .

As a critic of MJ at this stage of his career, I saw signs I could hopefully be wrong ……….again :))

As we speak I see Campbell , Mansell and Clarke as better small forward options and that has to be a positive for our forwards

I saw a player that’s been in the system for some time now fumble and hesitate (the poor execution right on the siren to try and get the ball to a team mate that saw him fall flat on his face is an example of what I’m seeing) tells me this guy is NOT an AFL footballer and never will be. He is not fit enough; his body shape works against him - top heavy and has little penetration with his kicking.

Best game he has played for the club.

Can he do it consistently? Not so sure.

Was the first time I saw him not being completely hopeless when the ball was put into the air. Hope this continues

Heard Alex Neale Bullen, who had improved out of sight, attribute Yze for building his confidence when he was at the dees. So you might be right about the coach giving him confidence, as long as it comes with know your limitations on inbound kicks when the opposition is close by.

Before he backs himself to take that kick he needs to be able to hit a target that's 7.5 metres wide and infinitely tall and infinitely deep from 20 metres out dead in front.
No he doesn't. If he gets the ball in that position he needs to back himself to make the inside kick. That's the game plan. Whoever has it needs to do it, if it's there.

Goal kicking is a different kettle of fish.

to be fair to MJ, Hardwick only wanted him to run and place pressure. Now he is able to be part of the mid field link, to take on players, break the lines. He did that well on Sunday. The more he plays this type of role, the better he will become.
