Mark "Bomber" Thompson - Overrated?

Or is Scott benefitting from the work done by Thompson?

Seem to recall Frawley "inheriting" some players and looking good early in his coaching career as well.

Yes agree.

It seems like a trick question. Surely a coach has to have been influential in the success if a team wins 2 premierships under his reign. I don't see how it could be argued otherwise.

Yes agree.

I don't rate Bomber that highly. Weakest double premiership winning coach if you ask me. But he's still a double premiership winning coach.

Wow! Faint praise. I have enormous respect for anyone who can coach a premiership team - even our own Tony Jewell!

deceitful...untrustworthy...likes his pork pies...

overated probably but the above are things you wouldnt want
a coach to bring to your club...

Sure is. I guess the question being asked though, was Thompson influential in Geelong's success, or does Scott's performance this year prove otherwise?
Ever stuck a slightly dried out roll in the micro for ten seconds just to refresh it a bit?

Thompson was a very influential cog in the Cats success. The coach and players etc. just got a little stale and crumbly. Scott has just perked them up a bit for one last charge into the valley of premierships.

Based on his record alone he is at least as successful as a coach at Geelong as Malthouse has been at the Pies . It takes more than a coach these days to be successful however and Geelong had most of the ingredients .
Great recruiters , money from a terrific stadium deal , a very good administration lead by Costa , Cook and Balme and that important ingredient called luck especially related to father/son picks .
Most of those still exist for Chris Scott but his true test will come when the old guard retires and he has to regenerate .

Kind of like being the poorest billionaire. Outrageous statement. Built the club from ground up.

Yeah, that's kinda the point I was trying to make. No matter what I think of him, he's still a dual premiership coach.

Outrageous statement.

Hardly, especially on PRE.

Built the club from ground up.

I don't know how much say he had in that and the recruiting etc. But if he was instrumental then he's done very well.

I still think a better coach would have left the Cats with 3, maybe 4 premierships instead of the two he left them with.

He did have a great Pres and CEO, but I agree; outrageous assertion.

The culture we have in Vic footy makes it almost impossible to get out of a job in a clean, up front way. Unlike NRL, where coaches/players make announcements during the year, we consider people incredibly disloyal if they leave for better money/lifestyle...

I have no probs with what Thompson did when he exited Geelong.

They lost the Hawthorn GF and last year he was going half hearted and cost himself. History will judge him as one of the finest coaches of the last 30 years. Your coach is involved in everything in putting the side together. He would put down the blueprint for what he wants and Stephen Wells would find it. It's a team effort but you can't chop out the coach and give him no creidt.

Yep it's pretty much damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I've been very critical of Mark "Dumber" Thompson over recent years. There is no doubt in my mind that he cost a juggernaut two premierships. His coaching against Clarkson in 08 was hilarious. And Clarkson is no Sheedy or Parkin. And what he drew from his players in 2010 was pathetic.

But he did coach them to two. He's a dual premiership coach.

Of the worst of Thompson history now shows clearly that having lost the best player in the game Gary Ablett jr Geelong improved. And most will put it down to the departure of the smarmy deluded *smile* "Dumber".

The best of him was fine. Very fine. But I can't remember a coach whose worst was more horrid or that persistent.

Geelong improved the minute he walked out...

I think Chris Scott inherited the best team.

To put Tom Hafey's amazing record into context...Coached from 1966-1976 and the Tigers won 173, lost 70 with two draws. Four flags and GF in 1972, PF's in 1971 and 1975.

In retrospect, how on earth was he given the 'lemon and sarse' after one failed season in 1976 given the last 30-odd years?

Probably the biggest mistake RFC ever made . His record at Collingwood, Geelong and the Swans suggests we would have never got ourselves in the situation we did in the 80's if he was a 20 year coach for us , which he should have been . Players would not have gone because they would have been loyal to Tommy . Graham Richmond presided over our greatest triumphs and then presided over our greatest failure .

Hafey also got the flick after taking the Pies to 4 Grand Finals in 5 years.
