Lynch !!

He compares his output in 2020 and 2021 - so not just last Thursday's game - to be on a par with Peter Wright.
Lynch statistically at least, has dropped off in per game marking stats.

2014 - 65th in ave marks but 5th in ave contested marks (1.95)
2015 - 19th in ave but 1st in contested (2.55)
2016 - 8th in ave but 1st in contested (2.82)
2017 - 10th in ave 37th in contested (1.42)
2018 - 62nd in ave 29th in contested (1.5)
2019 - 10th in ave 6th in contested (2.24)
2020 - 168th in ave 18th in contested (1.53)
2021 - 166th in ave 26th in contested (1.72)

He's generally behind the liks of Mason Cox/Tabernar/Dixon in contested marking stats.

He's definitely gone backwards in output since his 2019 year.

Firstly he’s helped win us two Premierships so the trade will forever be worth it.
However I do think he’s struggled to mark the contested ball particularly since that badly broken finger a season or two back. Tom used to have a vice like grip but his hands have never been the same since that injury.
Still I don’t regret the trade for a milli-second & with Jackmond close to retirement though his star may not shine as brightly, Tom’s role as a crash packs key fwd is still valuable as he too heads into the twilight of his career.

I’m a fan and some of his finals have been superb. But I’d like to see the dominant key forward more.

His body just isn’t right clearly. Love to see him just present at the ball. Jump. Not look for contact and wrestle. Be mobile.

We need to send Noah down next to him in the Jack role. And I think Caddy as the third tall is worth another go.

The yearly Lynch bashing article by Robbo. Remember this is the guy who went on a rant when we recruited him.

Move on people. Lynch owes us nothing.

Nobody’s talking about “owing”. Talking about a long stretch of form that has been underwhelming.
Lynch was at the top of his game when our midfield was firing. You could argue our midfield was at its greatest in 2019. From then on it’s been a steady decline and Lynch’s form has coincided. Even as early as last week, Lynch looked like he was going to kick a bag but then Prestia goes off, midfield goes to *smile* and the supply dries up.
How can a key forward dominate when we are losing the clearances 17-2?

Ah cmon. We won a Premiership in 2020 Aces ! How much better a midfield does he need ? And in 2021, it didn’t stop Jack from kicking 51 either.

Even in 2020 he was in the top 5 of the Coleman Medal.
We are effectively basing his poor performances on 2021. One of out of the 3 years he has been at the club. Let’s revisit this half way through the year.

As MD Jazz pointed out, his form flow goes way beyond 2021.

(Will kick 6 on Sunday now. Guarantee it. Welcome back Tom !!)

We had the lowest inside 50 count out of any team for the entire round.
And he’s now competing with 2 other tall forwards.
Under the circumstances, don’t think he could have done much more
What’s it been like the last few years ?

I thought you needed other talls to drag defenders away ? Boy, times have changed !

Note: Jack gives him more chop outs than a VIC Market butcher, something Jack himself referenced on AFL 360 ie running decoy.

Will kick 6 on Sunday. Guaranteed.

I think he looks the fittest he’s been in a couple of years.
He’ll shine with Jack not there for a few weeks.

Yeh, he was a marking juggernaut. He was recruited as such. His output in that regard is that of a B-C grader. Perhaps TOO is right and his finger is impacting the marking.
Plenty of opposition supporters I know love bagging him as overrated. Hard to argue against on recent years. Perhaps he will be better off without Jack.

If he commits to continually moving and hitting up at the ball, he’ll be fine. Will also help regain his marking touch.

If he stands still & tries to body his opponent, he’s doomed. Won’t get a kick. Too much of the latter since 2020.

I've been concerned about this finger for 2 years. He broke it midway through 2020 & the numbers you put up re contested marking dropoff correlate with the injury..
This is a photo from him on the weekend. He can't even make a fist.

Here’s a new concept. The ball doesn’t always go to Lynch.
Modern football is about spreading the load and having multiple goal kickers. Something Hardwick himself said very early days when he reinvented Riewoldt.
In 2017 we had one tall forward. In 2019 we had two tall forwards. Now we’re playing three.
I wouldn’t know what Jack said on AFL 360 as I don’t watch that crap but last season he kicked 51 goals. Not bad for a decoy

So if he takes 1 extra contested mark a match, his average jumps from 1.7 to 2.7 and he is #1 in the league?
small margins

That said he is playing differently now. It seems likely he is hampered and has adjusted to not getting outmarked

Jack kicked 51. But I bet the breakdown on the opposition teams would be telling.
My guess is he kicked 30 goals against bottom 6 teams, 15 against the middle teams, 5 against the top 4.
