During our run of wins last year the obvious on field leader and the player who lifted the whole team was Maric.

His form this year has been so so!

Reckon this is where we are falling down - no tower of strength in the ruck and no man mountain to follow and believe in.

In part yeas but because he is not 100% and there are NO others steeping up ... That's the issue. Have been saying leadership is poor throughout the dim era. Not just this year.

Our leadership is poor because our leaders have never been led.

Chimp & Lids have been brought up underneath Chris Newman, who despite being solid in the role is hardly knows what is required to drive a consistently successful football team. Chris' predecessor Kane Johnson.

Compare that to say Joel Selwood who learnt the leadership virtues off Cameron Ling and Tom Harley.

The only way to resolve that is by breaking the circuit. i.e. importing leaders to your onfield outfit.

Said so at the time he was available, but the big one that was imminently gettable that amazingly we were never in the ballpark for was Brendan Goddard. Free Agent and all. He had the mega strong personality, the outspoken voice, the on-field example (especially in big games), the winning background and the uber professionalism we required.

He's the biggest miss we've had in many years.

Those that decided he wasn't worth chasing very very hard should have been sacked there and then.

Goddard would have been perfect. He doesn't fit our money ball approach unfortunately.

The future might be the WB Boyd approach, get the best whatever the cost, because only those with the best win
It's super I mportant to be able to pick who the best are
The start is to get the best at selecting the best on board now and that's the next challenge for Gale and Richardson as they reshape our list

.... it is unforgivable that after all these years Hardwick has not developed a strong leadership group within the club. It is truly appalling. Can't imagine running any kind of organization in which talented leadership is so visually measurable on a minute by minute basis and yet despite that need (Cotch withstanding) we have none. Not One.

Simple question: whose leadership qualities are so overwhelming so undeniable that he will obviously be our next captain?

As Leysy knows, I have been singing from this prayer book for years. Goddard, Paul Chapman and Adam Cooney are the three players that I would have recruited for leadership over the past few seasons. Interestingly, they all ended up at the Bombers, a team that is very similar to ours, with one major difference. They win close games.

Well, only one major difference if you are happy to disregard that fact that they are drug-cheating wannabes with a delusional coach who still believes that if he says he still has a squeaky clean reputation often enough someone will actually be silly enough to believe him. Only one major difference if you are also happy to disregard the fact that their buddy-buddy stadium deal at Docklands takes money out of the other clubs' pockets and puts it into their to the tune of several million dollars each season.

Apart from that, TOT endorses all Leysy's words. Leadership is learnt. Knowing how to win under duress is learnt. Having the courage to kick a match-winning goal is learnt. Knowing when to lift your output during a critical five minute period in a tight game is learnt.

Drifting through games until the inevitable conclusion plays out is also learnt. Our team has lost more games by less than 20 points over the last 30+ years than any other. Lots of bad learning has been going on for a very long time.

I can't think of the last strong leader we had at Richmond. How long ago was it? Who was it? It seems like we haven't had a good one since the early '80's when we had a team full of guys others were happy to follow.

Great post, Leysy and yourself sum it up well.

'Our leadership is poor because our leaders have never been led'. A further consequence is a lack of high profile ex-players who can teach leadership. It's a massive hole to fill on and off-field. Gerard Murphy is an attempt to rectify this off-field (along with poaching Port/Hawthorn coaching staff), but it will count for little without importing strong on-field leaders. It's one thing to talk about leadership on a Wednesday, it's another to see a great leader in the heat of the moment on game day.
 
Sure did... as well as a lot more accountability across the playing group, after that 1st quarter especially!
 
How is Jack not in the official leadership group? One of the most natural leaders on the field that we have. Anyone see him giving the pre game speech out on the ground last week?
