Italy Trip Help

I'm looking forward to following Euro 2012, it will be an awesome atmosphere being in Italy when they play matches.

I was in Italy for the 1990 World Cup. Great atmosphere until Argentina knocked Italy out in the semi.....

Had trouble listening in when I was there last time because none of the stations played the games over there internet channels. Think possibly because it's not in there broadcasting contracts. Might have changed since then.

Hi all again. Thanks to everyone that's offered their advice and well wishes. Work has been a nightmare the past few weeks. Was ready to snatch it friday and just walk out. Counting the hours down helped calm me a bit. Less than 15 hours to go before my flight leaves. And I haven't packed yet :). Had a nightmare trying to get my phone unlocked but hopefully all is ok now. I may give a running commentary on here to those interested. I'm no good at posting pics though. Hopefully will pop on here for a bit from time to time.
arrivederci for now

Have a safe and happy trip Legends. Looking forward to reading all about it.

Hi All. I'm back :( .
Had an amazing time over in Italy. Arrived at the start of a heatwave, I don't think it dropped below 30 the whole time I was there. Started with the first night in Rome, then had a 6 hour train ride to see my dad's family, who I hadn't met before. The trip was long, but the scenery was amazing. Mountains, old bridges and ruins, towns built into the mountain sides. I didn't know what to expect when I met my relatives. I hadn't met any of them before and only recently had started email communication with one of my cousins. Plus my italian isn't very good and I knew that almost all of them didn't speak english. My cousin met me at the station and we spotted each other straight away. Somehow we managed to communicate well. The lifestyle over there is totally different to what I'm accustomed to. I was only there for 3 days, which was way too short. Met almost all the family. The food  . The first night didn't prerpare me for the next two days. Nice simple meal. The next day, lunch...ravioli entree followed by pasta main. Being the special guest, my aunt made sure I had the big plate. Was great. That was followed by the meat course with vegies, followed by sweets, then gelati then coffee. A couple of hours after that, I was driven to another aunt's place. Ready for dinner. Pasta, then pasta then meat, then......... Was worried I would explode. Next day, the same deal. I literally couldn't finish my meal by the end of the night. I think they all tried to cram me full so I wouldn't feel bad. I must have gained 5 kg by the end of those 3 days. The highlights for me was meeting most of my dad's side of the family, the beautiful scenery and seeing the house where my dad was born 84 years ago, which one of my aunt's still lives in.
Said my goodbyes then had to go back to Rome to start the tour. The wheels on my suitcase gave up due to the heat, getting to the hotel. Was further than I thought. Went out for dinner the first night. There were 47 in our group. Ended up being a good group. Tour went from Rome to Pompeii, then Positano. Assisi, then Venice, Verona, Como, Pisa then Florence then ended in Rome. So much to see, even though I had seen most of it before. The downsides were the long stays in the coach travelling, the heat and most of the hotel rooms left a bit to be desired. Oh, the early morning wake ups and starts were annoying, but had a good time.
Then it was off to see my mum's side of the family. I had been there before and some were born and lived a while in Australia. Had a good relaxing time there as well. Was there when Italy beat Germany in the Euro Semi final. Everyone went into the town centre. It's not a big town, with only 2 main streets. It resembled Lygon street ;D
After that was 4 days in Rome doing my own thing. Caught up with a cousin and his girlfriend. They took me on a night tour of Rome. Was absolutley spectacular. I wish I knew how to post pics here. Ended up finishing around 2 am, not because I was tired, but my feet were killing me. I walked everywhere except the last night when I forced myself to use the metro. Walking helped me see a lot of amazing things. You think you are going to take a 10 minute wal to the end of the street. It ends up being an hour because everytime you take a few steps, there's always something interesting to see. One of the highlights in those 4 days was going to the Circus Maximus. They erected 4 big screens for the Euro Cup final. I missed the start and didn't realise that Spain was 1-0 up. I took in the crowd. There was a sea of people. I think there was over 100,000 people there. The area can hold a lot more. The atmosphere was great until Spain scored their second. There were a few brave Spanish fans wearing their colours. There were a few more that you could pick out because they were quiet ;D. I left halfway through the second half, as did many others. Would have been an amazing spectacle there if Italy had won.
Still a bit jet lagged so I won't go into details for now. If anyone's interested, let me know here and I could go into detail later on. I'm seriously thinking of moving there. Never felt more relaxed.
Thanks to all that offered their advice here for me.

Great to hear Legends. Let's hope another El Nino is not starting. My sister's in Italy and France and has mentioned the heatwave.

Feeling fat? ;D

Great post thanks Legends. Glad you had such a good time. I'm hungry for more stories of your adventures when you feel up to sharing them.

TF was talking to a friend in the long term weather bureau today and the indications are there for another el nino. Expecting a fairly dry winter and spring north of the divide where we are.

They've mentioned that autumn was going to be dry but in fact it has rained a lot as the dams are at 70% first time in 15 years. The Weather Channel kept mentioning through summer that La Nina will definitely leave, but it hasn't. It's just a bit weaker. I hate hot weather (especially heatwaves) so I'd prefer with a cool & wet summer. Helps the farms.

Depends where the farms are. Desperately need a decent rain here.

I thought the outer NE had a lot of rain so far with the dams increasing nearby.
