Hi all. After years of not really having any decent time off work, I decided a little while back to plan a trip to Italy in June. I have been once before, way back in 2000. Trips I usually take are always outside footy season so I don't miss any games :). This year, just by chance, I looked at the fixture while I was absentmindly thinking of the trip. Over there, it will be summer. Planned beautifully. I leave the day after I see us play Freo. I miss the GWS and Adelaide games, which I wouldn't have attended anyway, being interstate. Plus throw in the bye in between. Back in time for the melbourne game.
Most things have been booked but I would like advice on one thing, if possible. I would still like to listen to the games. I have an iphone with a radio app. I know I will need a different sim card due to the ridiculous costs with international calls etc. Is there any sim card out there that has a fair bit of data included. The hotels I am booked with on those days say they have wifi in rooms, but I might also be travelling when the games are on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Even non phone related :)
Cheers

Buy a preloaded data sim when you get there. Tripadvisor normally has good info on what's available.

Btw, remember that if you order a "latte" in Italy, you'll just get a glass of milk.

That's what I've heard. Thanks Baloo. BTW, should have mentioned, my parents are italian ;D. Although I have downloaded a translator app ;D

My advice is keep it close to your chest. Damned gypsies.

Have fun.
Weird. Got the same advice last time I was there too in 2000. Nothing's changed it seems :)

Where in Italy?

Staying with some family for a couple of days on the east coast, in Pescara. Then a 10 day tour, Rome, Pompeii, Assisi, Venice, Verona, Italian Lakes, Genoa, Florence then back to Rome. After that, seeing different side of the family, between Rome and Naples, then spending last 4 days in Rome on mini day trips etc. Seen most of it before but love the place.

OK. So it's most of the North then. For a summer, the South would've been great.

Sounds great Legends. I haven't been there for 10 years. Forget the Tiges and enjoy yourself. ;D

Yep. I can forget about work and enjoy myself. Not the Tiges ;D . I would only be sleeping when the games are on anyway ;D

I only 'remembered' the Tiges when I got bored at The Oval during the Ashes in 1993.

We all need a break from this tough job we have in following this club. ;D

Can't think of it as a job. Haven't missed a home game in 24 years even though I know what usually happens. Don't care if I miss a day of work though ;D

I was in Italy last year. I bought a preloaded data sim from TIM, the big Telco there. There are TIM shops around in most places.

Just a tip that if you are a foreigner and want to buy a TIM Sim for some reason they require a passport as ID. I left mine in the hotel and had to go back and get it.

I love Italy, fantastic place for a holiday.

Heading over there again next year. Good advice.

Naples has the best pizza in the whole world. Pity having to wash it down with Peroni.

Have to take your word on the best Pizza CMT but it's a hole of a city. Probably get robbed on the way to the Pizza shop.
Felt very unsafe in my time there. Do NOT look like a tourist if you must go there.

Yep, stayed at a real cheap dump next to the train station. Naples was a hard city but day trips to Capri, Pompeii and Pozzuoli made up for it.

Thanks guys. Will look into all tips and advice. And yes, Naplesseems like a place to avoid. My cousin refused to drive us down there last time we were there :)

Funnily enough Naples was Leysy's favourite city in Italy.

Not many have agreed though. ;D

Not me either, not a fan of Napoli.
Cinqueterre is my favourite place in Italy. Awesome area.

Legend of 80

I'm heading to Italy myself, with the family in June too.
We are arriving in Rome, then going to Krakow for a few days, back to Rome, then travelling north to Lucca, Udine, Como, Genoa, and back to Rome. (Sounds like we might nearly cross paths somewhere along the line)

I remember that when I was there a couple of years ago, an uncle of my wife, had pay TV, and the Anzac Day game was live on one of the channels - might have been an espn channel.
We are trying to stay in places that have free WIFI, so I hope I can tune into the games using that.

The suggestion of the preloaded data SIM is a good idea.

I'm looking forward to following Euro 2012, it will be an awesome atmosphere being in Italy when they play matches.
