I'm bored, what games should I watch?

3 minutes of footy, 1 goal, then 1 ad break with 10 ads plus 2 promos. Get stuffed Channel 7, I'll find a torrent instead thanks.

Channel 7 play replays and then fill it up with twice as many if not three times as many ads for a live game as its already a known quantity and no need to rush back live in a bid to try and get that advertising cash its moneys worth.

Nice try 7 .

It sure did, my memory has faded of that period but we were doing "Richmondy" at that point. Then losing to the Swans after a couple of wins you wondered whether we could get back on track.

Somehow I doubt they were timing their form but the form returned when it mattered :cupgold

The most obvious change in game plan and style from my memory seemed to kick in after about round 16- or 17 after the loss to StKilda.

It correlated with Broady coming into the side in that extra running tall chop out defender role, which then opened up our defence as a unit as Vlastuin became free to intercept. He (Broad) played 10 games straight 7 season games and then all 3 finals from memory.

The change to the defence set up was stated by Rutten back in an interview, they made Broad put on size and work on building upper body strength and positioning for contests so he could play tall when required, all whilst he was rehabbing from his long term shoulder injury.

Rutten said the MC had decided to use him to play a specific role to change things up. The game plan had been identified but just needed the extra running tall in defence to shore up the back half.

Shorty subsequently got dropped for the game in which Broad came in, the defence tightened up the forward half opened up and the chaos really started from that point. Short's form had tapered for about a month prior and he became the casualty and was unable to get back in as Jack Graham and Townser also took their opportunities as specific role players and Grigg allowed for an extra mid at all times when he stood in the ruck to spell Nank.

It caught everyone out as did the outright attack on the ball the opposition and the contest, and the rest as they say is history.

The style of footy from round 16 onward was different by necessity as much as design.

The MC worked out the new game plan to utilise the troops they had in the best way possible.

Rutten came up with the defensive change and Blake helped implement the new chaos style of movement and attack.

One of my favourite days at the footy was round 17, 2008 at Docklands against a very strong Brisbane side.

Black, Bradshaw, Charman, Brown, McGrath, Power, Merrett, Drummond, Brennan and more. The Lions were four goals up at three quarter time. It should have been all over... but it wasn't.

Notably, Cotchin (18yo), Riewoldt (19yo) and Edwards (19yo) played that day.

Here is the last five minutes:

And here is the entire second half:

Moore, Sanchez and McCalamity in the backline ........no wonder I joined the darkside.

Interesting side in that game its the change of the guard that had begun.

Rancey was in his first year at the RFC. and Dusty would come in the following years draft 2009.

The junior stars just showing flashes of the players they would become - Jack, Cotch and Shed.

Tambo had talent but somehow he just lost his mojo, the pressure and scrutiny just got to him I reckon.

Was the same old story Richo, Bowden and Brown the main stays with the win, Foley hard at it, Deledio at his best.

Newman and Thursfield good honest workers, Sarge *smile* getting swung from one end of the ground to the other.

Willy T was a real good player for the Tigers sure and steady back in defence, always played to his limitations and was dependable.

Was a shame he lost interest and retired . The #2 has been a good Guernsey down back for the Tigers -Gaspar, Thursfield and Grimes.

Tucky and Jacko winning lots of the footy but also lots of turnovers.and Troy Simmonds battling hard.

Sugar Johnston was just about done at this stage and Newman would be skipper the following season

The footskills decision making and turnovers used to slaughter us in this period and would have me dead set apoplectic!!

It was always going to be to be a smaller body that made way, they identified Broad as the the exact player they needed to bring in and when he was ready he was slotted in. The rest as they say is history.

Great observations and I'll keep my eye out, so much easier to see these things when watching game after game. Still only half way through the Carlton game at the moment.

You can see glimpses of the game plan in the mid year games, but you can still see some fragility in implementing the new game plan. It seems to be working, but only some of the time, which is reflected in the inconsistency between quarters.

I remember reading an interview with Brendan Gale after the 2017 season and he talked about how they thought they could go up the ladder and get into the top 4 but thought they needed another tall forward to go all the way.

Having an extra tall in defence makes sense from what I am seeing. The defence is performing very well but can be pierced. Also the drive off half back is good but not great.

I try not to remember that first game against StKilda!

That changing one player made a lot of difference just shows how close we were to being contenders, also how close the 2017 season was and how even the competition is.

Towner and Graham were significant really significant changes in their roles the last few weeks also, they stiffened the side up and increased the defensive aspect of the game. Towner freed up Caddy more and assisted Jack, and Graham was immense with his defensive pressure tackling and two way run.

Nank, Dion and Caddy were significant from the moment they arrived.

There was a lot of change in a short period of time, not to mention the off field mindfulness deal with the mental aspect of things post 2016.

The Michael Jordan doc started last night on Netflix if any MJ fans are about.

Yeah I remember Towner and Graham having an impact.

It was quite strange seeing Elton there in early rounds and Menadue is still getting a run mid year. We were a couple of players off our best team in the middle of the year.

Also wondering when Lloyd goes, he does some good things, but seems to go missing at times.

It's fun riding the roller coaster of 2017, especially when you know the outcome.

The first Aints game was the one for me.
I remember thinking at the end of the game, well, that's it. We are done for the year.
I mean, any one team can lose a game, but we were playing a team clinging on to 8th spot with a percentage below 100.
And they monstered us. The score at half time was 14.8(92) to 1.4(10).
Was that the game where Kane Cornes was banging on about us getting ahead of ourselves?
In general, he's a goose. But who can blame him for saying that?
I thought we were history.
After the at, the only game we lost was Geelong at the Bowling Alley by 14 points.

And the Umps helped them get over the line too along with Trossmans shocker with Taylor killing us.

i left the saints game at half time. I've only ever done that once before, the Geelong game at the Dump where they smashed us by hundreds.

Strangely, I wasn't super-worried by the loss - just felt we had a very off night.

I'm one quarter in to that game against StKilda. Geez we were way off the pace. Maybe a combination of a really hard game against Port (with travel thrown in) and having to play at Chernobyl.

The rest of that game will not be pleasant, but I'm watching the whole season so I gotta put up with it.

The game day thread against Port was an interesting one. Much gnashing of teeth in the first half. I thought we weren't good in that first half but toughed it out a bit to stay in touch. Then some good play in the 3rd and we kept going in the last. The goal kicking was woeful on both sides.

The game day thread for the StKilda game is something I am looking forward to, this should be a blood bath!

Just finished watching that 2017 StKilda game from Docklands, one word: putrid. Absolute shocker.

I'll never watch it again.

DS

Theh have the 1995 Norf ANZAC eve first quarter rout up on the club website.
Fantastic.

Half way through the Richmond v Brisbane game in 2017 now. Hmm, commentators started the game by saying we don't often see Richmond play home games at Chernobyl. Yeah, that's right, because it just ain't our home ground. Not to mention it is a dump.

Looking a bit better this week. Controlled the game in the first quarter but Brisbane came back in the second. We'll see how the second half goes. Woeful kicking for goal by Richmond.

From watching 1.5 games at Chernobyl it seems a very bad surface. Richmond players were slipping over against StKilda and are doing the same against Brisbane. Beautiful dry day but the players are having trouble keeping their feet. Something wrong with that place, hope we never have to play there again. You can even feel the lack of atmosphere on the TV 3 years later. How did they make a ground with so little atmosphere? I don't get it. VFL Park had it's issues with a lack of atmosphere, being huge, out in the middle of nowhere, and you were miles from the action; but it had more atmosphere than Docklands.

DS

VFL Park had the good fortune to host some of the most iconic finals matches of its time.

1972 Second Semi, Carlton v Richmond draw.
1985 Elimination, North fly home to beat the Blues.
1985 Prelim, Fairytale Dogs couldn't hold off the Hawks.
1986 Elimination, Fitzroy pip Essendon by a point in pouring rain. Best non-Richmond final I've been to, I say that even though I was also at ...
1987 Prelim, Melbourne throw it all away to the Hawks. 'nuff said.
1988 Elimination, Melbourne pinch it from West Coast.
1990 Elimination, Collingwood v West Coast draw, messing up Essendon and paving the way for the Pies' drought breaking flag.
1991 Grand Final, crap game but it had Angry and the bat-mobile.
1992 Elimination, Collingwood finish THIRD but are bundled out after one loss with an eight-point loss to the Aints (sixth). Gotta love that.

Not to mention a few memorable home and aways:
1973 Round 21. Peter Hudson's comeback game against Collingwood ... a lazy 8.3 despite losing.
1981 Round 11. The same two teams crammed a gazillion people into the ground. Wouldn't happen today.
