Premiership player Shaun Grigg considers retirement to allow Tigers a mid-season draft pick

Richmond will be without premiership ruckman Toby Nankervis for up to two months as teammate Shaun Grigg considers retirement to allow the Tigers a mid-season draft pick.

Premiership hero Grigg is battling knee and hip injuries and at 31 is unlikely to go on next year.

The Herald Sun understands conversations are taking place with Grigg about his future and whether he might potentially pull the pin mid-season.

He is not being forced to make that call but with an AFL recall looking unlikely given his injuries retirement is one option.

It would clear the way for the Tigers to take a pick in the May 27 mid-season draft.

The club has already interviewed Coburg small forward Sam Lowson.

Midfielder Grigg has played 214 games with Richmond and Carlton and was a key factor in the 2017 premiership win as a midfielder and part-time ruckman.

Respect if he pulls the pin.

Might be the first premiership hero to leave the fold.....

To get a Coburg smAll forward?

Ummm

Yeah we need another one!

If Grigg wants to retire... because he won’t make it back: ok.
I don’t want him to retire just to get another small forward from
Coburg.

If he is unlikely to play again it would be a great decision, surely they can find a good job for him.

But as DirtyDogTiger says, for another small forward? We got heaps of them, and we have 2 big forwards too. How about a tall ruckman who can also play defence?

What a fantastic servant of the club. Kicked goal 6 of the 7 goal run in the gf.
Thumbs up Grigga.

On drafting a small forward now - not so silly if there’s no real decent pick in an area we need to fill. We later use this surplus in an area of strength when it comes time to trade at the end of the year for a better need filler.
It’s like having savings in the bank for a rainy day.

One of my mates has made the definitive comment on Grigg’s career. He observed very early on that if Grigg kicks a goal, we win.

This.

But Grigga should only go if he knows it's time - body has had enough and desire is gone too. He has that right after the career he has given RFC. Flag winner.

If it is the end for Grigga, he goes out as a very popular premiership hero. Hardwick described him as one of the smartest players he has seen. :clap :clap :clap

We are asking one our of greasiest players to retire to pick up a ‘small’.
Rather keep Grigg on the list.
You cannot treat superstars like that.
It brings back memories of 1982

The coburg player is going to carlton or north.

No disrespect to him but thank god. A ruck or key forward , or another mid would be of more use. I read an article somewhere we had an interest in Pickett I think it was from W.A. Is that the mature age mid that was overlooked in the draft ?

yet 3 years ago, he was just about the most critcised player at the club, coaches favourite, etc.

Have the utmost respect for Grigg.

He has been a wonderful player for us after coming from Carlton.

If, as reported, his body is shot, then the wise move would be for him to retire with dignity, not just to get a mid season pick.

I'm sure he and the club will do the right thing by him if it comes to a retirement scenario.
