“We’ve got to improve our list, improve our talent, there’s no doubt about that.

“It’s going to be a big off-season for us, we have to be players in that field.

“We will be active in the trade period but so will 17 other clubs are trying to do the same thing.

“We’ll put our best foot forward and try to get some quality players to the football club.”

But he said that wouldn’t involve trading out established stars.

“Those players, as far as I’m concerned, will be staying.”

"It’s been a disappointing year - it’s what you learn from the year that’s important. Look at any sporting club, any organisation, there’s always a kick in the backside at some stage, and this is our kick in the backside."

Beautiful combination of accuracy and brutality. Like gutting a man with an epee -

1) In the 3 years Roos coached Melbourne (2014-2016) we won 33 games and made 2 finals series, and that's including the shocking year we just had. They won 21 games and made 0 finals series.

2) People including himself are slapping him on the back for "turning Melbourne around" because they won 10 games this year (2 more than us). Their last 2 results were a 20 point loss to Carlton with a finals spot supposedly on the line (it's worth noting that on form Carlton are possibly the worst team in the league - they went on to lose to Essendon in the last round) and a 111 point loss to Geelong in which they were maybe slightly better than we were against the Swans.

3) Both Danny Frawley and Terry Wallace had better winning percentages as coaches of Richmond than Paul Roos did as coach of Melbourne, and Dimma is so far ahead there's no comparison...

4) His playing and coaching career have consisted of captaining Fitzroy to to their death, and winning 1 premiership in 12 years as coach of a team with an extra $1 million in the salary cap - when the AFL basically cheated their own rules to ensure Barry Hall could play in the GF.

I get the impression that the new coaching structure is designed to assist Hardwick by taking some of the decision making responsibilities away from Hardwick and make it more of a corroborative effort.
