General Trade Discussion 2022

I'm a bit perplexed by the reaction. Geelong have bought pick 7 for $1.6 mill. They didn't get it for free. $1.6 is significant, especially for a team at the tail end of a premiership window. $1.6 for 2 years, $1.8 for 3, $2 mill for 4, it all a big price to pay for a Suns VFL player. Sure he might come good and play a role, but that will be it, but its still significant. Its not a free hit.

Correct Snake. That sort of money gets you an A Grade quality mid. Not a bloke who couldn’t break into one of the worst teams in the history of the AFL.

And that's it, they bought a top ten pick, the player is insignificant. It a player and pick trade period, not an auction.

The player is not insignificant. Lists are small and caps are tight. If I buy a house for $1million, the $1million is the price, I have to hand over that money, or I don't get the house, and it is significant.

Don't get me wrong, if it were Geelong or not, it stinks.

I have no problem with it. More likely than not to go wrong IMHO. Lists are small, caps are tight, especially for a club allegedly selling we're country boys all in this together who play for cheap.

What's with both the AFL expansion teams having to salary dump anyway? Incompetence or?
Coinciding with Gil & SHocking's departure. Hmmm there's that smell again.

GWS had a real crack, they just played all their chips and went overboard trying to retain players in order to win a premiership.

They will pay for it now, kinda sucks for Kingsley inheriting the list with theassociated contract issues.

Said it already.

This Bowes to Geelong deal has probably been agreed to for some time.

Just made out it wasnt and had iinterest sought by a few clubs to make it look more legit.

Nothing would surprise me anymore ...or less.

The big question is, can the kid play or not. If he turns out to be a player, it is a fantastic deal.
Kid can play. Is tough. Just had some injury issues I believe!

I would have liked us to maybe have a look at this kid. Spread his salary over for and add incentives to it. Get pick 7 give to the GWS and grab Hopper.

You can never have enough midfielders!

We had that rhetoric too, then we won Premierships, everyone then starts to deserve more or want more.

Of course it has. Geelong's CEO was the AFL Footy Ops manager for years so he would have known this was coming and had it all set up when he went back to Geelong. Just like he changed the rules to stymie Geelong's biggest threat and now they have won a flag.

If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, walks like a duck..........................

Yep.

They might as well cut to the chase and forget points and just assign $$$ to draft picks

Pretty easy; pick 1 is $3m, pick 80 is $250

This salary spreading is BS. If a club can take Bowes on and then take his 2 year (currently) guaranteed salary, they should be required to honour it. Full stop. If GC could ask him to drop his 2 year contract to the same over 4 years scenario they may not have to give up pick 7 to fix their salary cap. The result to Bowes is the same whether it is GC or Geelong paying him. You take on the salary of the player and you are getting a sweetener like a top 7 pick - then you MUST honour it.

Mockery otherwise.

I'm still more p!ssed off about how a club can pay more than the salary cap for their list of players if they get another club to pay some of the salary, that is rorting pure and simple. If you want equalisation then every club has a cap and every player who takes the field for that club is paid 100% by that club.

Giving away a player and a pick is pretty desperate and I would have thought no club would want to end up in that situation, it is mis-management.

Agree with Rfc4Ever, GWS had a crack, and went damned close by making a Grand Final. They back ended their contracts to attempt to get a flag, may not have worked but it is hard to fault the effort. I reckon the biggest issue with how GWS went about it was their list balance, you need more than a team of gun mids, you also need some role players.
