Game plan 2.0?

I don't think players start magically finding foot skills midway into the season. Having a bit of grass for the target to run into makes a big difference.

you are very astute mld.

No, just you wanting to start another thread. Pretty easy to see through. Why couldn't you incorporate this into the coach thread? You would of been a hit in that Kath and Kim program. "Look at me, look at me".

I think creating a new thread on the tactics specific to a particular game is OK.

It was definitely well executed.

But what about time spent in the forward line? It was vastly different to what we like to do.
The ball lived in our forward line in the first quarter. After that we were beaten in the clearances...

I think teams have worked out that to beat Port you need to sag back a little.

Port is very good and breaking the press so teams are now preferring to say "come at us".

A very, very deep hole for Hinkley to climb out of.

But hey, if it works so well, is Dimma flexible enough to try it more often?
...But yes, we sat back a bit. Perhaps the next [r]evolution of the game is to hold the length of the ground more, to cut off the over-the-back cheapies that themselves were the counter to the press. Positional footy (albeit not as we knew it) might be on its way back! It'll suit us if so.

Was just throwing it out there. I look at it like this-

The style of play we have put out for much of early this year and last year was awful to watch and agree it is high effort, low return. Now either Dimma thinks that what we see on the ground in those games is the way to win a flag, in that case he is an idiot, or the players havent been executing the way the gameplan is intended.

Put simply, i dont think Dimma is an idiot.

But like everyone else on here, its a theory. I have no way of knowing what is actually going on behind the scenes.

amen to that, brother.

i absolutely think that's true.

Played a back 6, which I think works for us as Rance, Grimes, Flossy and even Batchelor are good one on one players.

Thought Houli was pretty ordinary, big test for him going forward if he cant sag off in a back 7.

We did look much better but then again our style works against an attacking side that is low on confidence and down on skill.

I don't have the stats but I'd love to see time spent in respective forward 50s tonight.

We kept ours clear and functional.

TOTAL reverse of what we like to do.

Dimma could be pulling an ace from his sleeve at just the right time. Who'd have thunk it?

Its true.

If i could work out how to attach an image of the heat map you'd see you're right ... although watching the game it was pretty obvious.
59% in def half and the spread was predominantly wide and down one side of the ground.
Port pretty much 50-50 forward/def half

The commentators got it right I thought - let Port have the ball in the back pocket but attack the second ball out of defence by clogging up half back to the centre line and putting fierce pressure on the kicker and the receivers. Worked a treat for most of the game - stopped their running game out of half back and gave us multiple scoring opportunities from turnovers.

Sure Port beat us in the clearances but this is normally a strength for us, we sacrificed something to get a benefit elsewhere. Our tackle count also way up.
