Game Day vs Western Bulldogs

Hopefully this is lie the Saints game in 2017. Too bad to be true. Just move on to next week.

Yeh, we just never play that ground well. Can't remember a good win there.

Can just imagine the doggies pregame assessment of us;

Beveridge: don’t worry guys, we’ve got the Tigers game plan worked out.
A1: what if the convert to plan B?

Silence...

Everyone bursts into laughter.

Yes.

I think the MC will agree Menadue for Garthwaite was a selection error. I was all for it, but it seems a mistake.

we will never know.

was strange how slow we looked, with a very fast side on paper.

dirty night. bin tape.

Yeh, I was the same.

And I thought it would be a high scoring attacking affair and we would kick too many for them. Naughton, whilst looking OK , hadn't exactly torn a game apart. They seemed to have extra numbers in both attack and defence. Even when we led 20-10 it didn't look good . They were up and about, and as usual (when he plays us) the Bont looked like the leagues best player.

Reckon our result against Port was an upset.
Doesn't look all that great now but at the time we had lost the last two and it was the only game this year we had all of the big four out.
Nobody expected us to win that one.

Was certainly a win full of merit but not the sort of lions over eagles upset or port over Melb or Eagles...my main point is we are on par or a game behind my expectations of games won at this point. But at 3 losses already we way behind last years form and cannot afford to put in performances like last night agiainst mid tier sides.

Suddenly it "trudge" ? funny. when we're winning its force, storm, stream etc. Sums up the whole rooster to feather duster, penthouse to the sh!thouse nature of footy right there.

Well what is it then snake? Clean lace out footy? Is that why the golden haired million dollar man in the forward line cant get mark? You cant see the big picture? Cute. We played this rubbish last year and got smacked by a better side. This year the whole competition has caught on and already we have had 3 games where the result was in no doubt from half time.

On the fringe players, if we'd fallen off the cliff and were 2-5, or even 3-4, you might have a point. This is just reality, it nothing unique to us or something we have to go into crisis talks over. We have 3 of our 4 best players out. Full stop. Every flag side has some stars and then a bunch of average to good players who buy in and hit form. Thats footy, thats flags, not unique to us. Take 3 of the 4 best players out of any side in history and they go from great to good or OK. I actually think on balance we've done pretty well. Last night was dirty, but not sure what people expect. 3 of our best 4 out, heap of young players and fringe players in.

Yes we have injuries. We played the Doggies... Last year we didn't and what happened? We have too many lacking players and a direction that wont cut it.

Not too concerned with the loss. We were without our fab 4, our full back (naughton doesn't dominate if dave plays), grigg, and an injured rioli and vloss. Positives are we are getting games into stack ross baker bolton higgins balta who will improve our side overall going forward

Tend to agree. Had a feeling we were never going to win that one. Dogs pulled the game of their season out of their asses which didn't help.
Although we need to get smarter with our team selections. Garthwaite on Naughton could have been the perfect match up. This needs to be addressed. Been a few games this year where selections or non selections have hurt us.

Agree. There's also the domino effect as players like gowers and dickson get off the leash as grimes is manning naughton. People don't rate dave but he's crucial to our structure. Rance relied on dave just as much as dave relied on rance.

Yeah Bont showed hes the best in the business right now.

Hes Dusty 2017, or Bont 2016

Will win and deserve the bronwlow this year

We lost this one at selection. We had three players missing from the goal-to-goal line and replaced them with three flankers. We have responded to the loss of Rance by moving Edwards to centre-half back and will probably get away with this move as long as there is plenty of height elsewhere in the back line. Then we replaced Astbury with Menadue. This is not a pot on Menadue but it sent a really clear message to the Bulldogs, that we didn't rate their talls and we gambled that our speed down back would trump any height advantage that they had.

Bad move. In this competition, you can't afford to show no respect to an opponent. They have a tendency to show you up when you do.

Poor selection, in my opinion.

It has also highlighted a really serious problem that we need to try to address at the Mid-season draft. We really need to find another tall defender who can play on the marking talls like Naughton. Without one, we are going to lose games regularly. Speed is great but it is useless when they bomb it in to an imposing forward and he outmarks the defenders. This strategy only needs to work a few times a game and the result will go south very quickly. Astbury coming back will help but, seriously, what did we expect was going to happen when Grimes and Broad were the only two tall defenders? It was just an invitation to load up and bomb it long.

Naughton, Bontempelli and Gowers were more than enough to get the job done.

Pretty spot on. Worrying sign is that it has happened a few times this year.

The one thing that magnified the issue was the complete lack of pressure from our fwds and most mids. This allowed the doggies to walk out of their backline with plenty of time to deliver the ball to their key forwards on a platter. They get put under our usual pressure and they are bombing or spraying the ball out of their 50.

There’s one player would be perfect if they introduced Mid Season Trading.
