Our successful game plan is built on chaos & contested ball. The new rules have opened the game right up & pressure largely removed from us.
Opening the angles with the man on the mark rule has completely changed things.
Sydney had 117 uncontested marks yesterday. That's unheard of!
Alternatively we had 88 points scored against us from turnovers.
My no 1 concern is we have too many guys in the side with ropey disposal.
It's all about precision disposal right now..
Do we have that on our list? Challenging.

I thought we struggled to get it out of our back half all day as well. How many *smile* kicks did we have either go to a Sydney player or over the boundary line from the kick in. Our disposal was deplorable yesterday.
At the other end of the ground when we went forward we constantly kicked the ball onto the heads of our forwards.

Learn more from losses than wins, but that’s the worst we’ve played since the Hawthorn game last year. Lots to fix. For me, centre clearance is the first thing. Losing Prestia didn’t help but Hickey flogged Nank plus got forward and kicked goals too. Also highlights loss of ruck flexibility with Soldo out. With Prestia now out for a few weeks, it’s time for Ross & Collier-Dawkins. Defensive zone failed - plus on a hot day against a team that wants to run, we just didn’t match the level. Too many blokes either not fit yet or just out of form. Plus the alternate plan? Surely it’s to play man on man.

There is no plan B. Never has been. We trust in our system (stubbornly).

The first six-eight rounds for us has been the same for the last three years - scrape wins against poor teams or teams with similarly limited preparation, cop losses against teams who are up and about.

You could see it in Dimma’s presser - he wasn’t lost for answers, he knows we were simply beaten by a better team on the day.

The best teams are no longer the ones that beat all comers. They are no longer the ones who never lose by more than four goals.

The best teams are the ones who accumulate enough wins to finish top four. In short, they can only be judged as such at the end of the season.

Dimma hinted that we may not see favourable results next week or even the week after. I can totally see that happening. From 2-3 we can start hitting our work and build a reasonable form line.

FWIW a team like Richmond only needs to make the top eight to be a genuinely good chance. With that break between the last round and finals I would have us as favourites from any position.

Watching the game again this time on Tv, we absolutly got reamed by the pricks.
The mark not paid to nakas was a disgrace. Goal to Sydney.
The high hit to McIntosh, the umpire paid below the knees. Goal to Sydney.
And 3 blocking free kicks, all goals to Sydney.
I can understand the free kicks but we never get them.
Someone mentioned umpire 7 bent us over, but the prick who was constantly bouncing the ball outside the circle and only calling it back when we had it was the most disgraceful umpiring ive seen.
In the 2nd qtr twice he called it back, once when Nakas got it and another time when Dusty had it, but when Kennedy got it outside the circle he called play on.
From the outside it looks like not are we playing against the oppostion but the 3 clowns.

I know it makes us sound like sore losers - but everyone on here has acknowledged Sydney - the umpiring actually WAS disgraceful

There is no doubt we are behind in preparation at this time compared with most teams as we have been for a few years now. It is not coincidental that we have been poor at this time of the year. I would guess that we are still getting the miles in the legs and it certainly has looked that we are tired and leg-weary. We we’re very slow yesterday. Much slower than we normally are. I reckon the coaching team know this but this is part of our conditioning process for the year. Our equivalent to round 1 of the other teams is about round 5. Remember we also played only one practice match.

A lot of sense here, Carter. It goes back to the deplorable coverage. The media seem to think that the comp is done and dusted within the first 3 rounds. The season goes for 22 rounds, not 10.

I am loathe to ever talk about umpires as most criticism is merely one-eyed tribalism. For the most part they do a great job.

But - the centre square bouncing was atrocious and I was disappointed Dimma didn’t mention it in the presser.

On several occasions the bounce clearly favoured Hickey. When the opposing ruckman cannot get near it the situation is farcical.

Yes, that coupled with the rule changes have changed things for a few sides. Later in the season the teams with the hardened, experienced personnel and the developed game styles will be the ones that rise to the top.

Yes, it looks like kick to kick. This is what the media and the custodians of the game wanted. There’s a saying about being careful what you wish for, because just might get it and find out it wasn’t what you really wanted.

Disagree with much of this. In the past we have relied on our coming into full fitness and being the best at chaos. The new rules give greatest advantage to those teams who combine speed with kicking precision. Physical courage also remains as an absolute necessity.
The new rules require that the match committee plan for adjustment now.

Can't believe people jumping at shadows. The new rule hasn't changed anything. We don't have to change a thing. We are going exactly how we have the past 2 seasons. People have short memories. We build into a season and start off slowly. We don't have the run in our legs like some of the teams that are up and about. We will destroy the swans in july or august once the machine starts rolling. Don't listen to the media *smile* re blueprints and new rules and open footy. Once we get serious teams won't have it so easy. We learnt a big lesson in 2018 and now know how to manage our strength and conditioning in order to peak at the right time. Let the swans and bulldogs hold up the April cup. The media and the other 17 clubs still haven't figured out how we do it.

I watched some of our players off the ball closely yesterday - the game was over so didn't give a stuff about the result. Some of our more competitive and hardest runners like Grimes Lambert Graham and even McIntosh were hunched over puffing and just couldn't go with their opponents. The swans looked fresh in comparison. I knew once I saw Grimes give up the chase that it's all physical conditioning and there was nothing to worry about.

Agree Haz. There is still only one football going into our F50.

Despite all the new rules, despite the hand-wringing, there is still only one football going in.

The dimensions of the grounds are still the same.

Our back seven are elite at crossing to spoil the air ball. They will still be able to do so no matter how quickly the ball is coming in. The system is intact and viable.

Conditioning and effort will build slowly, particularly in April.
