GAME DAY - Tiges v Blues

One thing I forgot to mention above, but I know it hardly needs a mention - umpiring as inconsistent as usual and free kick count as unbalanced as usual. Some things just don't change. What really pisses me off is when you see two virtually identical incidents and the decision is different. They really need to get more consistency.

The other thing I should mention is tickets on phones suck, no, that's being generous. Unbelievable how bad the technology is as people try in vain to get the ticket reading machine to actually read their ticket. This has got to improve, and improve maybe 1000% if it is going to be a viable way of getting people into and out of the ground at breaks. Too slow, doesn't work half the time, just ridiculous. Imagine that with 90,000 people instead of 50,000.

That is the last time I attempt to use my phone as a ticket, back to print outs for me. A printed bar code or QR code just works, quickly and efficiently. On the phone it is a joke.

Great to be back at the footy, I've missed it so much. Great to hear the roar at the start of the game and obviously sing the song at the end, belted our brilliantly by the Tiger army.

Thought we were generally in control of the game bar maybe the first 15 minutes of the 3rd when they got on top and we were probably lucky that they stuffed up what should have been several goals. We were scored against a bit too easily. as someone else mentioned 61% conversion of inside 50's is way too high and makes a mockery of some of the dumb Carlton fans phoning in after the footy, ie. put williams in there and they win. His main skillset is ball use inside 50. Higher than 61%? Seriously.

We generally controlled the game, but some poor ball use and decision making going inside 50 really restricted our scoring. +34 inside 50's showed our general dominance.

Thought our best (in no particular order) were Graham, Martin, Jack and Balta. Rioli lucky he kicked 2 goals, was rubbish other than that. Caddy was quiet on the wing. Bakes very quiet in the 1st half but got more involved as the game wore on.
Aarts I'm not sure on, nice kick, but just doesn't have the pace for that small forward role. Reminds me a bit of Lloydy, very good kick but just doesn't have the pace that George and the others have.
Reckon Lynch is still carrying whatever that foot complaint was, seemed to struggle to get around the ground as he normally does, didn't seem as confident as he usually does kicking from 50.

Thought Carlton were fairly good, but they should be worried about how many inside 50's they conceded. On another night, they could lose that by 40-50 points.

Inconsistency of umpiring is its usual best.

McKay whacks Vlastiuin a good 50m away from the freekick. No reversal. Bring back to Carlton free, leads to Carlton goal.
Astbury whacks one of their guys just after winning a free, reversal. Carlton goal.

Baker tackled members side wing, handballs over the line, correctly pay a deliberate free.
Carlton player does the same, AFL members wing (right in front of me), throw it in.

Cripps does 360 when being tackled, play on.
Cripps tackled in the last quarter facing AFL members wing (I think by Dusty), drops the ball, blatant HTB. Play on.

The Liam Jones deliberate was probably the most blatant deliberate you'll see, no Richmond player inside the 9m from the top of the square. Nank possibly a bit lucky, but his one at least was a lot more 50/50, players within a metre or 2 of him.

The worst one at the ground (haven't seen a replay only on the big screens) was when Broad was penalised in the last when spoiling McDonald. Clearly got the ball 1st, free to McDonald which I just don't understand, is spoiling now outlawed too?

This. That was the only one I got upset about all night. The umpire was hallucinating.

Having said that, Deboy aside, Mollison/Foot/Fleer is nearly the worst lineup you could pick for a Richmond game. I thought we came through rather well considering, despite the free kick count.

Mr Posh, i read it the same way. The inconsistent umpiring does my head in. The thing is - when it goes against against us, generally it ends up in opposition goals.

We will finish on the bottom of the free kick count this year......again.

That one had me out of my seat and my 11 year old saying "Dad, can we swear at the footy now" and I just said "you can't" haha

It's official.
.richmond no longer respect the power of pace nor the importance of its role in our success.
.markov-league quickest probly most balanced kick at speed i can remember, monty replacement for bash- trade for pick 52
.butler, menadue, moore all suitable depth for todays game...discarded
.caddy-great peak 4 years ago but slowd to a dribble, delusional push for return on this forum cant get near it..stamp the papers.
.rioli-by name only...since broken foot rarely sighted these days...actually lacking pace, skills & smarts...sorry but gifted 2 flags
.aarts-luv the endeavour but average legs
.lynch-why playd with such obvious issues...could not even present
.required but plodders asto nank presti jack
.our top 6 need more george lambo & kmac type backup....
.a worrying too much for too few tnight. ..blues had 5 of best 22 out.

For them, Walsh broke tackles at will, has lifted. and they seem to have a lot of extremely one-sided players.

Harsh but elements of truth. Just need to remember, no team is 100% choc-full of A graders.
And hopefully we have some more speed and class waiting in the wings to push through - Dow, RCD, Ralphsmith and Martyn and co.

But I am still disappointed by the giveaways of Butler and Markov. Think that kind of speed and running power would be very handy with this new game.

Beating this lot just never gets old.

They have had their way with us for years and years since 1982 compounding the embarrassment in that EF win.

Its payback time.

They've got 4-5 weeks of training and drilling on us its also their GF and we still got the points playing with a fair degree of shithousery.

Blues style was to run forwards of the ball, so generated plenty of scores for them. Many of those were outnumbered blue attackers to our defenders.
Its a good system to combat our pressure, knowing that if you can get it forward there will be teammates and a higher chance to score.
And they broke too many tackles. If I was a blues fan i would be heartened by the game
However the gamestyle is too flakey defensively.

Felt like we always had their measure

Yeah Russian roulette footy from the Blues. Gotta admire Teague for being so bold.

Look, our offence is a crap shoot. It was a crap shoot in 2017, it’s still a crap shoot in 2021.

We’re like a bloke madly pulling the lever on a one-armed bandit. Sometimes you get a reward, often you don’t.

The main thing is the amount of looks you get. With a little conditioning into the season, a little more cohesion at training, a little less pace in the oppo as the season settles, we turn 15-15 into 20-10 and kick 130.

Also, how good is it to get 20min quarters back? I was so happy with it, felt like attritional football again and I feel that with our strengths S Hocking just handed us another premiership cup.

Folks are talking about speed in this thread but it’s not about that. It’s not even precisely about running power. It’s about good old fashioned endurance and we have it in spades.

The new rules have this season looking like a candy factory and I don’t see why we can’t cash in against most sides and secure a top 4 berth.

It was just great to be back at the footy and be reminded what an entitled, squealing pack of *smile* *smile* scum supporters are.

Expect some disappointing losses early , not a prediction, but I suspect some of the better sides may get hold of us in that form

Without looking at the fixture , I wouldnt be surprised if we are around the 5-3 , 4-4 mark after the first 2 months

We looked sloppy and underdone at times but in every quarter we came late. Carltons manic offensive game style can’t be maintained for 30 minutes every quarter, especially with 75 rotations.

Was always a danger game as we are a month behind them in preparation. I said before the game that if offered the 4 points I would take it.

Carlton are a decent side for sure and we will get much better than that
