Game Day - Richmond vs Brisbane - QF 2020

Obviously hated losing our outstanding winning record against Brisvegas last night. Pricks had a massive game n we were mediocre n spent all game just hanging in.

Probably the ideal season and timing for us to have the double chance and lose our first final this year.
We should get the Lynchman back for next game plus we've got some game time into Shedda, Presty n *smile* after extended time out.
Also get some finals heat into Balta, Aarts even Pickett n Cholly.
We've had a fairly big run of performance the last six or seven weeks just cementing a top four spot n I'd rather get a little blip game out of the way while we still have a life line rather than having to try n achieve another streak similar to last year to win the flag.

Biggest niggle for me would have been to much stop start interruption if we'd won last nights game. We had the extended break ( bye ) just before our last two H/A games then would have our pre finals bye last week n then another week off waiting to see our prelim rivals if we'd won last night. With so many experienced players Nank, Houli, Presty, Shedda, *smile*, Cadds, missing large chunks of the year plus the disruption around Broad, Lynch, Soldo, Stacka etc re form injury n stupidity. I feel much more comfortable with us having to play a solid block of four finals this year, a bit similar to what the Doggies needed to snaffle the 16 flag.

Might have been something from Sheedy way back when he had the likes of Lodger Merret n Kevin Walsh hovering around n swapped his defence with his forwards with some success.

We lost by by 15 cats 16 in similar score lines.
So are we as far away as the cats ? If we are (much )better than cats them Lions must be (very) clearly superior to Port.
15 points is a comfortable 25- 30 in other seasons.

Half awake conclusions
Two years in top 2 means Lions are not imposters. Several players were considerably more mature than last year. A handful of our newer additions looked very out of sorts.

Our "System" reverts under pressure to long bombs without enough ground level crumbers and scrapers arriving when the ball does. Again last night.

Have we given up the half length entry to Castagna, Lambert, Caddy?

Lions owned the corridor forward of centre hence they magically corrected their kicking for goal.

Can Nsnk stand up for 3 more matches let alone ruck. He won't give up but boy needs help.

QF losers have great record bouncing back week 2.

I actually don't feel too bad this mornin. Sitting in the backyard, coffee, sunshine and PRE, life is good.

1. Glad the "hoodoo" is off Brisbane's back because I couldn't stand another minute of hearing about it.

2. I was kind of expecting that performance. All week I've felt that everything is just too perfect. The media, the interviews, the vibe. Then we came out smiling and chipper especially with Hardwick making his grand entrance to the anthem.

3. We were minus Lynch. MASSIVE difference to our forward structure. Riewoldt and Lynch work well together seperating and blocking defenders. Chols defender was able to leave him and intercept or spoil all night which is why Reiwoldt always had 2-3 players to compete against. All Chol had to do is stand between the contest and the defender but... Lynch returns next week so happy days.

4. We were fumbly which I equate to lack of urgency. We lacked focus and looked like we were just rolling along. That's a good positive we can out of it if we switch on next week.

4. Most importantly, I feel upbeat because I think it's the loss we needed. We are still alive and gathered no moss. Prestia has that extra game, Lynch will be back and we'll be 400m from the ground.

Lastly, I see Port and Brisbane taking the game towards Contested Ball . Brisbane aren't quite there yet but Port look ready to rumble. I can see them being very tough teams over the next 2-3 years. Do Clarke and Jackson need to look at adding some more starch?

I agree, wholesale changes not needed. Lynch is super important. My concern is the ruck. We can't have Nanks playing 91% game time, particularly against 2 big strong opposition ruckmen. How do we address that?

This loss may be a blessing in disguise.

We have a number of starts returning from injury. We had a bye only a few weeks before the last round and then another pre-finals bye. TBH i was worried about the lack of footy headinginto the Prelim particularly for the likes of Edwards, Prestia, Astbury and even Nank and Houli.

At the end of the day, we always had to win 3 fnals to tak the silverware. Now we just have to do it with 3 games in 3 weeks and that suits me just fine.

We are good enough to do it, though we'd want to have better touch than we did last night. In our past games, we never had issues cutting right through the corridor against Brisbane and kicking most of our goals from inside 15m. Last night the fumbles and lack of clean skills hindered that. The umpiring certainly didn't help eithe, nor the fact that Brisbane seemed to have adopted the strategy of many other clubs now, and parked most of their team back allowing them to rebound into open space. If we are on our game, this strategy will fail, with the ball basically living in our forward half. Last night too many intercept marks and some bollocks frees allowed easy exits (Rioli push and Martin push and 50m - How does Hawkins get away with worse being his stock play?).

We didn't take one intercept back in the back 50 which is staggering. We let possession count in the first half, which is unlike us. It just wasn't our typical game.

I just think some continuous footy will do us the world of good.

Bit of a difference getting every single game of the year on your own pitch while majority of other teams need to travel and live in a hub away from family. Nowhere near the same. Didn't say it only affected us. The whole season is a schmozzle. If anyone outside of Brisbane or Port win it then it should be seen as a Massive effort.

Umpiring these days is a lottery.

They don't pay something for 2 quarters then switch to paying it in the third.

They ping Vlas? for incorrect disposal/holding the ball when Robinson? knocked it free then forget about about all the other ones.

Also interesting that they put their whistles away in the 4th quarter when the game was virtually sewn up.

All anyone wants is consistency.

hed be pretty good in that role, however I’m a big fan of building our defence around Balta , I’d go with Nank rucking , Lynch and Jack taking the odd throw in forward and Balta the odd one down back, definitely not Dusty in the ruck FFS the best player in the game and he was effectively out of those throw ins .

I don't think Jack and Dusty taking thrown ins is a problem. Rucks often stsy out of the F50. And in fairness he was just doing what Hawkins does every contest. But Dusty got pinged for it.

No issue with Jack doing it Brodders , I can understand the theory with Dusty taking them, however much rather have the best in the business about to shark one then been effectively out of the contest

There's an enormous amount of complete garbage being written in this thread I'm afraid, and this is a snapshot of some of it.

Firstly, the scoreboard didn't flatter us by any definition. Lost by 15 points and gave away two goals by acting like dickheads.

We also went at 29% forward efficiency. As a comparison, the day we played Sydney we went at 30%. The last time we played Brisbane we had 5 less inside 50s and scored 82 points, at 48% efficiency. Brisbane's figures were essentially the same when you balance the goal kicking accuracy.

As for the guys you allege were a mistake playing, let's have a look at that. There is no comparison to 2018 because taking players in with injury/health concerns is completely different to playing healthy players who haven't had the game time.

Then the specifc, Astbury was more than serviceable neutralising contests, Prestia was clearly in our best few players. If you think he was a liability I'm suggesting you watch the game again. Especially when you suggest Nankervis should have gone forward to help Riewoldt but it seemed to me he spent plenty of time forward and was hardly on the bench. Nankervis did what he does every week, busted his arse against the odds and Houli and Edwards were a bit down but hardly awful.

And out of the guys you have named who would you have played instead? Broad for Astbury is hardly like for like, Garthwaite? Do you think Ross would have had the 20 touches Prestia got and been in our best? And who the hell plays instead of Nankervis? Eggmolesse-Smith for Houli? Higgins for Edwards? I can't see how anyone would suggest any of those moves makes us a better side.

As for Chol, he is copping a hiding but I wonder how many people have considered the role he was asked to play? I'll wager plenty that the coaches asked him to concentrate on negating Andrew's ability to intercept mark and to even contests and I thought he did ok at. There was a moment in the second quarter when he was one on one and could have led but you can see him wanting to stay with Andrews as well and do his job, so he gets stuck in nowhere.
There was another moment in the last quarter where he was beaten and you could see he was emotional. It was a shame he didn't clunk the early mark and kick a goal to give him a boost, he's a young bloke finding his way on the best defender in the competition. He certainly showed a heck of a lot more heart and go than lots of the so-called supporters laying the boots into him.

Agree with most of that TBR. Our forward efficiency has been terrible in many matches this year and it cost us badly last night. I don’t like the lack of discipline we are displaying either.

Disagree on Chol. IMO he has shown he doesn’t have the intensity required to play consistently at AFL level. He was poor last night and Andrews did whatever he wanted. Chol just doesn’t compete hard enough. He was also poor against the Crows and in the previous game he played which is why he was dropped.

He has AFL traits but doesn’t play with AFL intensity.

Just on Chol TBR I’m sure his role would have been to try and get Andrews wide of Jack and give Jack some one on one opportunities. I haven’t watched the replay and I’ll stand corrected if I’m wrong which will be told at selection this week I’d imagine, however I thought Chol competed poorly a couple of times ,ball to ground was the minimum and he simply got out marked, in saying that I thought he simply didn’t attack hard enough to smart dangerous sports on the lead , again I think that’s the issue with Chol, plays with little intensity and lacks work rate.
