It hasn't been a great start to 2003 for Richmond.
After being on the end of a 43-point loss to Melbourne in the Wizard Home Loans Cup opener last week, the Tigers travelled to Geraldton, Western Australia, and were well beaten by a free-running Fremantle, 13.11(89) to 6.5 (41).
Boom recruit Des Headland starred for the Dockers with 22 touches and two goals, while Matthew Pavlich again showed his liking to a midfield role with 21 touches and three goals.
"Were really wrapped to have Des," Fremantle coach Chris Connolly said.
"He's a class player, he fits into our age bracket, he's Western Australian and we expect him to be at the club for 10 years."
Adding to the the Tigers' pre-season woes, star utility Joel Bowden will appear before the AFL tribunal this week after being reported in the last quarter for charging Docker Ben Cunningham.
The Tigers lost Mark Chaffey for the first round of the home-and-away season for charging Demon Matthew Whelan and club officials are hopeful Bowden will be cleared.
Fremantle had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first quarter to open up a 41-point lead at the first break and then outscored Richmond by two goals in the second term to all but have the match wrapped up at the long break with a 54-point lead.
An undermanned Richmond fought on well in the second half but the sting had well and truly gone out of the match.
Fremantle's midfield got on top with Troy Cook (19 possessions), Daniel Haines (19) and Paul Hasleby (15) providing the Dockers with run.
While Headland may turn out to be the most valuable recruit of the AFL off-season, the tallest player in the competition, 211cm Aaron Sandilands, showed he'll be a major presence for Fremantle.
Sandilands was able to take on a leading role in the ruck, which gave Troy Simmonds the chance to play elsewhere.
"He's an important player for us because with Troy at six foot five it makes it a bit predictable but with Aaron at six foot 11 it gives us a few options," Connolly said.
Fremantle was without Peter Bell, Clive Waterhouse, Luke McPharlin and Shane Parker for the clash while Richmond, concerned about the effect the long journey could have on its players, left out Matthew Richardson, Greg Stafford, Duncan Kellaway, Justin Blumfield, Wayne Campbell, David Rodan, Andrew Krakouer and Kane Johnson.
"We left probably 12 certain starters out of our team but we'll get them back over the next two or three weeks," Richmond coach Danny Frawley said.
"Our focus has always been on round one. We still want to win games of football and we haven't done that yet so we've got to make sure we keep our heads down and our backside up.
"We're disappointed with the loss but I think we got a little more confidence out of this game than last week's."
The game was played in 35-degree heat and Connolly said some of his players lost 2-3kg during the game.
"They were very trying conditions," Connolly said. "I'm just glad we got through with no injuries. We did play some terrific football at times.
Richmond's Craig Biddiscombe (hamstring) was the only player to leave the ground with injury.
Fremantle's next pre-season match is against Port Adelaide at Subiaco Oval on Saturday while Richmond will face Carlton at Optus Oval.
