We better have kicked more than 8 goals, but I dont care if we won or lost.
Hopefully we will see the names of some kids and recruits in the best players list.

It hasn't started yet..

I think it starts at 18:30 melb time..

Looking at the respective squads of both teams we will be doing well to get within 10 goals and realistically a 100 point loss or more is possible..

3/4 Time (6PR update)

Fremantle....12.10-82
Richmond....3.4-22

Not suprising as it's a full strength Freo against basically a Richmond "seconds". No mention of goal scores. Only 1 goal scored in the 3rd quarter (Pavlich).

Apparently it's frigging hot as well. 10 minute 3/4 time break in a cool room instead of the usual 5 minutes on the ground.

6PR update - 8 minutes to go

Fremantle....13.11-89
Richmond.....6.5-41

At least we haven't given up and played the whole game out.

Bowden has just got reported for charging  . If he's found guilty, are suspensions served in upcoming practice matches as he was reported in a practice game or are they served in the real stuff :(?

If no one played for Coburg and a 2nds team playing Freo - what are the rest of them doing this weekend?

typical..the one time he shows a bit of aggression he will get himself suspended for it..

I wonder if we made it to the 8 goal mark?
Who the better players were, just for interests sake of course :) Itll be more interesting next week now that Carlscum are on a roll! HAHA :D

I think we fiished on 6.5 so no cigar!!

I hope they played there 3rd best side, with Duncan as captain of course. What a joke they have to travel so far.

It hasn't been a great start to 2003 for Richmond.

After being on the end of a 43-point loss to Melbourne in the Wizard Home Loans Cup opener last week, the Tigers travelled to Geraldton, Western Australia, and were well beaten by a free-running Fremantle, 13.11(89) to 6.5 (41).

Boom recruit Des Headland starred for the Dockers with 22 touches and two goals, while Matthew Pavlich again showed his liking to a midfield role with 21 touches and three goals.

"Were really wrapped to have Des," Fremantle coach Chris Connolly said.

"He's a class player, he fits into our age bracket, he's Western Australian and we expect him to be at the club for 10 years."

Adding to the the Tigers' pre-season woes, star utility Joel Bowden will appear before the AFL tribunal this week after being reported in the last quarter for charging Docker Ben Cunningham.

The Tigers lost Mark Chaffey for the first round of the home-and-away season for charging Demon Matthew Whelan and club officials are hopeful Bowden will be cleared.

Fremantle had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first quarter to open up a 41-point lead at the first break and then outscored Richmond by two goals in the second term to all but have the match wrapped up at the long break with a 54-point lead.

An undermanned Richmond fought on well in the second half but the sting had well and truly gone out of the match.

Fremantle's midfield got on top with Troy Cook (19 possessions), Daniel Haines (19) and Paul Hasleby (15) providing the Dockers with run.

While Headland may turn out to be the most valuable recruit of the AFL off-season, the tallest player in the competition, 211cm Aaron Sandilands, showed he'll be a major presence for Fremantle.

Sandilands was able to take on a leading role in the ruck, which gave Troy Simmonds the chance to play elsewhere.

"He's an important player for us because with Troy at six foot five it makes it a bit predictable but with Aaron at six foot 11 it gives us a few options," Connolly said.

Fremantle was without Peter Bell, Clive Waterhouse, Luke McPharlin and Shane Parker for the clash while Richmond, concerned about the effect the long journey could have on its players, left out Matthew Richardson, Greg Stafford, Duncan Kellaway, Justin Blumfield, Wayne Campbell, David Rodan, Andrew Krakouer and Kane Johnson.

"We left probably 12 certain starters out of our team but we'll get them back over the next two or three weeks," Richmond coach Danny Frawley said.

"Our focus has always been on round one. We still want to win games of football and we haven't done that yet so we've got to make sure we keep our heads down and our backside up.

"We're disappointed with the loss but I think we got a little more confidence out of this game than last week's."

The game was played in 35-degree heat and Connolly said some of his players lost 2-3kg during the game.

"They were very trying conditions," Connolly said. "I'm just glad we got through with no injuries. We did play some terrific football at times.

Richmond's Craig Biddiscombe (hamstring) was the only player to leave the ground with injury.

Fremantle's next pre-season match is against Port Adelaide at Subiaco Oval on Saturday while Richmond will face Carlton at Optus Oval.

Tigers undermanned and overwhelmed

Fremantle cruised to a 48-point win over an undermanned Richmond yesterday.

Playing without Matthew Richardson, Brad Ottens, Wayne Campbell, Duncan Kellaway, Kane Johnson, Justin Blumfield, Ben Holland, Ray Hall, Ty Zantuck, Greg Stafford, David Rodan and Andrew Krakouer, the Tigers were overrun.

They kicked only three goals for the first three terms and six for the match.

Coach Danny Frawley was forced to use Royce Vardy and Jay Schulz in the ruck with the pair giving away 21 centimetres to Fremantle giant Aaron Sandilands.

Darren Gaspar and Andrew Kellaway spent long periods in attack as the Tigers searched for a marking option, leaving Adam Pickering, Craig Biddiscombe, Schulz and half-back Aaron Fiora to play on Docker full-forward Trent Croad.

Richmond's chances took a battering when Fremantle won the toss and kicked with a howling gale. The Dockers dominated the midfield and with Paul Medhurst and Troy Longmuir on fire in attack, raced to a 41-point lead at quarter-time.

Richmond had only one shot for goal for the term and it came after Adam Houlihan sharked a ruck tap before dribbling it through for a goal.

Fremantle played great defensive football into the breeze, harassing and tackling the Tigers to prevent them from using the breeze to effect. Kane Pettifer was the only Tiger to spark the team up forward with two goals, but Croad took five marks for the term and booted 2.2 into the wind.

Pettifer showed a lot of class throughout. He moved on to the wing in the second half and was easily the team's best player. He finished with three goals and showed why he was a first-round pick at the 2000 national draft. Fellow 2000 draftee Chris Hyde also did a good job for the Tigers tagging Paul Hasleby.

Frawley said the Tigers would get Richardson, Hall, Ottens, Campbell, Stafford, Blumfield, Johnson and Kellaway back for next week's game against Carlton and he was happy with his youngsters' performances.

"It was great for our youngsters to experience a howling breeze and a team full of running," he said. "To our guys' credit, they kept at it."

Fremantle's midfield looked strong throughout the day with Matthew Pavlich, Des Headland, Troy Cook, Matthew Carr, James Walker and Daniel Haines impressing.

Reading those match-ups (Fiora CHB on Croad ), how can anyone take the results of these practice games seriously. Bit of a joke really.

Hopefully for Kayne's sake and his AFL career it's a case of "cometh the hour, cometh the man". Interesting reading he did well when he was played in position that IMO suits him - on the wing. He's not a permanent specialist forward pocket.

Um, Geraldton just doesn't seem to be place to be proving that you are a first round draft pick. But at least he's doign something. Let's hope he can consolidate and have a decent year.

Can't wait till these pre-season farcical exhibitions end and the real season starts. Go Tiges!

Gotta agree. I think the pre season comp has been a joke this year.
With the rule changes etc I think it's designed more as a spectacle than preparation for the real thing.
Danny all but said doing well wasn't high on our agenda.
Leigh Matthews said they'd seriously consider not doing well to avoid the heavy travel schedule. (Not in those exact words though)
The AFL are stuffing around imo, but in the long run they'll need the everyday supporters at games to survive when they get off the telly contract gravy train.
Bring on round 1....Go Tiges.

Would you think Kayne is a better option than the wingmen we use now mt? To me he hasn't looked like he can run enough for that position, but hopefully his fitness has improved over the pre season.

I would want Kayne to play well on the wing (maybe even a run in the middle) for a while at coburg (not just one good game) before he is promoted to the seniors.
I agree it hasn't looked like he can run enough for that position (yet to be seen either way) but he's not going to improve his fitness stuck in a forward pocket and not getting his hands on the pill.

I imagine some regular contributors may have been upset to Kayne finally show something, but for myself, I was rapt to see that he kicked 3 and got best on for the tiges in what would have been a very hard match to get going in considering the lack of talent we had on the ground. He clearly has the ability, so well done son.

Also great to see Tiva get amongst the best. He is a major key for us this year with his run and movement thru the middle. Nothing better than watching Tiva get on the end of a handball moving into the forward half of the ground. The whole crowd lifts...

The final result was meaningless, the contribution of several vital..

Yeah agree mt.....I've posted before that I'd like to see Kayne string together some really good games for Coburg before he gets a look at the senior team. (That's unless he's improved heaps over the preseason of course)
I think he'd need that if he's going to make it as a footballer.
As it is he's virtually missed 2 seasons, by only getting a handfull of touches of the footy each week.
I can't see how not having game time or touching the ball for prolonged periods can be beneficial for a new kid starting out.
Go Kayne, the times here to stake a claim.
