Footy to Return

Big rumour, How the AFL will even out the competition this year.
Our qtrs away from the MCG will be 16 minutes.
But at the MCG the qtrs will be 6 minutes plus time on.
Steve Hocking will be using "the Duckworth-lewis method to even out the competition

Big rumour why the qtrs are only 16 minutes long.
It's compensation for Collingwood's 34 chokes in GF's.
Gilligan McLaughlin 'we cannot afford another Drawn game involving Collingwood, so hopefully the losers can stand up for at least for 15 minutes"

I love seeing that.

Meanwhile, everything I’ve seen from other coaches is negative, complaining, and throwing up excuses in advance for why they’re not at peak fitness.

Simpson is already sooking.
*smile* im spewing we didnt play them in 18 we would've GWS's them

I think they will need to keep the shorter quarters as a contingency in case there is the need to stop again and games then need to resume in a compressed form.

By the way, I asked the question today about the 1.5 spacing on the bench. The word is the medical advice is you are much more likely to transfer a virus sitting in close confines to another person for a period of time than you are with short physical contact like a tackle.
That's consistent with what the risk criteria has been since early on..... 15 minutes close to an infected person or two hours in the same space. Fleeting contact like brushing past someone in the supermarket a very less risky encounter.
But the prospect of having a full back being breathing down Toms neck for 64 minutes does strike me as cranking up the risk o Meter.

what is the etiquette re pubs as of July 1? I know numbers are limited and will slowly increase. But is there a time limit as well? I think NSW are bringing in 1 hour or something?

What I am asking is.... Can I pre-book a pub to watch Collingwood v Richmond with 2-3 mates?

Not certain in Vic but I thought they were only opening for customers having sit down meals. With limited punters they probably wouldn't be happy having a table taken up for the length of a footy game.

it might well come down to the decision of the individual pub

2021 might be a bit different player wise.

We have Jack R, Houli Dooley, Martin, Astbury, Grimes and Edwards starting to get to the end of their careers.

And no Rance of course.

Hope we have the players coming through to replace any of them that decide to retire or be de-listed.
It’s a good point Gray Star.
Baker, Bolton, Castagna, Graham, Rioli, Short, Stack and Soldo are already an important part of the future.
We have quite a few who are mid career, but for the reason you describe I hope games are also given to Balta, Chol, CJ and Ross this year.

A AFl season only remains solvent due to Media & associated sportswear etc etc contracts. No footy no moolah from the Media which is the mainstay of AFL revenue.. The AFL want to play even if it is a bastardised form of the game that the AFl community will just have to put up with. The players want to play as most are mortgaged to the hilt well beyond their means if salary slashed. Time for AFL to toughen up, cut your losses, cancel the season & start afresh 2021.
What a strange post. "A AFl season only remains solvent due to Media & associated sportswear etc etc contracts."

What are you advocating? They can't just cut losses, they have to wear those losses and gradually pay them back, over several decades instead of leveraging their success to continue growing and competing against the MANY other forms of entertainment available to us.
To minimise the damage they need TV money, you're absolutely right there. The economics of this are brutal and I feel like this is lost when I read comments like "Time for AFL to toughen up, cut your losses, cancel the season & start afresh 2021." It's not about toughness, this isn't a moral argument. It's a business and therefore an economic argument. So yes, there will be compromises to get as much TV content as possible - no season is not an option. I'm confident that most supporters understand the reality and will stick with it regardless of how distasteful some of the changes might be this year. I reckon you will too when the ball bounces for round 2.

I'm trying to get excited about the season re-start, I really am. Like @hutstar says, maybe when the ball bounces I'll be 100% on board.

But I can't help thinking the AFL is taking seriously the idea that crisis creates opportunity, and that means being gifted a licence to introduce a raft of loathsome changes by subterfuge.

I've heard all the arguments for the 16-minute quarters but don't buy any of them. The 60-second break after goals surely only pleases the advertisers. The hubs further unbalance an already compromised competition. A nighttime GF at Docklands? Sounds like an AFL executive's wet dream.

Great to have the footy back but not at any cost. Let's hope none of these nasty changes last when normality resumes. Just have the feeling we're being conditioned for them.

If so, there are better forums for trialling brain fart ideas.

This isn't the Fosters-Escort-Panasonic Cup.

Yeah, the logic that the AFL needs broadcast rights money so therefore they should cancel the season and so get no broadcast money eluded me.

How I view the AFL 2020 season will mainly depend on what happens to us in Rd 2. Beat the Pies and it's on. Lose to the Pies and it will be tough to really engage (unless we're in the Grand Final of course)

Couldn't bear to hear there shiit for 16 more weeks.
Hopefully by mid June, the rain and wind msettles in.
I can't think of a game where they have beaten us when its been raining.

Restarting it and getting the remaining games in might mean playing with much shorter breaks, you just couldn't do that with full game loads on players.

So for when we kick off do you expect the time on ground % being the same for the better players, or would they spend more time on ground? Understand if it gets compressed it'll change but are we likely to see a lot less rotations, or shorter rotations?

I think the 16 minute quarters is a really logical measure to put in place.

Initially I think the planning was to shorten the breaks between games to get more in before the inevitable stop. When the stop came sooner than they thought the thinking is now to have it up the sleeve in case of any further interruptions.

If we play 12 rounds and then five teams have multiple positive cases, or society has a second wave and locks back down then the game would stop. Restarting it and getting the remaining games in might mean playing with much shorter breaks, you just couldn't do that with full game loads on players.

Given you couldn't change quarter lengths during the season I think it is the right move.

As for the post-goal break I think you are spot on, it is just a boost for TV but they have taken a big hit from this as well so it seems like a small way to help them make some back.
I'm open-minded about 16-minute quarters. You can bet though that if they do keep them next year and beyond, they will reference this year and say, "Oh look, the average quarter still went 29 minutes" or whatever, conveniently neglecting to mention the extra waiting time after each goal. Once spectators are back, a minute from goal to restart will be interminable.

Half time breaks will be extended to appease broadcasters also. Those who were upset the proposed cut in that break wouldn't give them time for a beer won't mind, but I reckon it's already too long. And the quarter breaks have been getting longer too, I think out to eight minutes. They could cut those three breaks if they want to lessen the time a game takes to play.
