Im pretty sure Alex Ferguson said the 2 worse grounds he went to were Anfield and Highbury. Some interesting bits in Wilson’s article.
She hints that a large part of the animosity from AFL HQ towards us is political and stems from the idea that Gale is the best candidate to replace Gil.
Another part of the article talks about the club “railing against the stripping of hard-fought competitive advantages”. A not so subtle reference to the recent rule changes.
One can only imagine what has gone on behind the scenes between the AFL and Richmond over that
Also, why is Hardwicks comments on plying at Marvel so contentious? Is a coach not allowed to dislike a particular ground, particularly when they are forced to play there instead of their preferred home ground?
And one final point. Why is Hardwicks behavior questioned when it’s been no worse than the crap Chris Scott, Clarkson, Brad Scott and other have come up with over the years?
Another piece by Caro on Hardwick. Potshots at Hardwick and Clarkson.
I love these bits:
And while the reigning champions have limped to the line in 2021, the on-field struggle has again been punctuated by a share of off-field scandal mingled with a heavy dose of damage control.
But hubris, too, has crept into Hardwick’s weaponry and an air of entitlement not lost upon the coaching fraternity, those AFL bosses from other clubs who have sat alongside him on committees, and certainly the AFL who loathed his early COVID mood swings and cannot forgive him for saying he hated coming to Marvel Stadium. Even allowing for the fact that this competitive system conspires against winning dynasties comes the impression that the game’s bosses have had enough of Richmond.
The inevitable comparisons with Clarkson come into play when Hardwick defenders say that with any fierce competitor comes behavioural issues. Clarkson has been a nightmare to deal with at times and it cannot be a coincidence that so many good people left Hawthorn so soon after the 2015 premiership as the coach became all-powerful.
..........
So, Richmond’s struggles now and the club’s perceived inability to control its coach at times have suited that narrative.
Off-field scandal? Heavy dose of damage conrol? Hubris, air of entitlement, mood swings., clubs inability to control its coach.....
Hubris not lost on the coaching fraternity? Who? Name them.
Clarkson a nightmare for becoming all-too powerful?
She would get a job at A Current Affair tomorrow with that sort of muck-raking, unsubstantiable, rubbish.
Probably shouldn't have said it, but he was just being honest. Also, why is Hardwicks comments on plying at Marvel so contentious? Is a coach not allowed to dislike a particular ground, particularly when they are forced to play there instead of their preferred home ground?
I hear Michael Jordan was difficult to work with. I imagine at the elite level when anyone demands excellence there is a fair amount of pain and sacrifice involved. And yet he did say he hated coming to Marvel. And coaches did leave Hawthorn, and the fact that Clarkson is difficult to work with sometimes is well-known. And folks on here reckon the AFL does hate Richmond. And she got the inside scoop 100% right on Hawthorn.
And here's the kicker - Leppa, Fly and others did leave Richmond after 2020 for unknown reasons, and we saw the results this year. And we saw how the playing group responded this year - badly. (And yeah, injuries are a *smile*, but we fell off the cliff in the last quarter against WCE, and we've been falling ever since).
The problem some people have with Caro is not that she gets it wrong, it's that she gets it right a lot of the time. And that makes some of us uncomfortable.
