Final v Port

Skills, intensity and tackling were all poor. Too many passengers. Poor end to the season. We rely too heavily on Mon and a handful of others. Other teams improving quicker than us. Time for a new coach or do we turn the list over?

How are other teams improving better than us as we jumped into the top 8 for the first time.

We fell away a bit towards the end of the season but good effort to make finals for the first time.

It’s actually the 2nd time we made the finals. We went out in straight sets in 2022. Hawthorn, Port and Essendon only joined 2 years ago and are all in the finals.

Anyway, it’s a performance industry. The club has plenty to think about and a few big decisions to make.

The last 6 weeks , free kick isn’t always a great indication, however there was some very lopsided games , the Dees was the one that stood out the most .

Really hope the club asks some real questions in the off season , not just clarifications of umpiring but also our recruiting our lack of improvement in players skills and fitness , our game plans , our AFLW team has been in the system long enough to come under the same scrutiny that the AFL team does . Our program is not good enough as we speak time to get ruthless and make the correct changes on and off field …… imho 😁

Our issues playing the best teams are all to see.

Defensive group - They are pretty good, but Graham makes way too many bad decisions. I'd like to see more of Peck next season, reckon she looked really good when she played last year
Forward line - Way too much reliance on goals from Brennan, Greiser (I reckon she gets undeserved stick) and Yassir. Ford isa newbie and will get better, but gee we saw what having a good 3 that can mark can do at this level. Weird thing was, we were playing a front 3 with McLleland and then decided to go with 2 rucks instead of a ruck forward. I reckon we won way more games playing a forward / ruck than a ruck / forward. Ferg got this wrong.

Midfield - Just way too slow and again (its a trend) too much reliance on 2 - Conti and Sheeran. I like Dalloway, but she needs to find more of the ball, but I think Egan steals a lot of the "good" inside mid minutes. I remember watching something on her Insta that could explain what appears to be "bulking", as she was working on power, I think she's been failed by her trainer, as her power hasn't improved and all she has done is add bulk / muscle mass, which isn't the go for an AFL footballer. Lavey - my memory tells me she used to be really nimble before the knee injury, maybe its just her 1st season back, but she seems to have lost all of that, and Dempsey seems to have turned into a shadow of herself since the online abuse she got. With her being out best kick, thats not a good position to be in.

Just on today (and another for Ferg), but why move Hicks to the forward line, when she has played back all season, she looked completely lost and certainly didn't help with that forward line reliance on the main 3. We have almost dumped a player into the last forward position rather than find someone who can kick goals. I know she's slow but I'd much prefer Courtney Jones in the forward line, at least she's dangerous and always a chance of getting a goal. Its been an ongoing issue against the best sides, just not enough avenues to goal.

Plenty for list management to work on, hopefully they have a few zippy players they know about. Also, they need to find a way next year of using Bacon a lot more, she's sizzling when she gets her pace up.
Great post, Egan needs to run and keep running, forget even looking at a weight - see Luke Hodge slim down mode. Common sense don’t need a ‘professional’ to work it out

Disappointing end to the season. We had a tough last few games but there is a clear need for improvement, especially the skills.

Biased umpiring doesn't help but that seems to be a fact of life for Richmond. Wonder how the frees look in the wheelchair games, about the only ones I haven't looked at the stats.

Don't feel Ferguson is the issue.
The recruiting is still sub-standard.
Other teams seem able to indentify talented, skilled, fast players through the draft - us, not so much.
eg Year 1 imported a lumbering one-dimensional forward, but after recognising her short-comings and trading her out, went back to the same well.
We are a blue collar side of honest battlers heavily reliant on MonCon.
Need to get some skill and speed into the side.

Agree and think we've been a bit slow on it. Its why people think Yassir has suddenly become a gun, she's clearly been a very good player since we drafted her, its just becoming more evident that her speed and skill stands out in our side.

I do think we are trying to rectify the speed / skill in the side, but similar to the mens it will take time. Drafting Bacon and Ford last year was a step in the right direction. Certainly in the 2nd half of the year we've started to see that sizzling speed that Bacon has, she has a really nice side step too, that makes me think we have a good one here. We just need to find a way to get the ball in her hands more than we currently are. Averaging under 5 disposals this year, if we can get her up into the double digits next year then we'll start to see how good she can be. Eliza McNamara (at Melbourne) is the benchmark that we should be looking at IMO with her, has played a lot of wing / half back and went into the mid rotation a lot more this year and averaged a career best 22 disposals this year.

Well done to the girls team. I enjoyed watching the games I got to see. I love their hardness.

Unfortunately with two teams only one team can win. Great effort to make finals again and hopefully they can improve from here.
