FIFA World Cup 22

Belgium, as they were v Canada, pedestrian & deservedly beaten by Morocco.

German equaliser has opened up their group.

Belgium have been a massive disappointment so far. You'd think with Morocco playing Canada last they will qualify. I think most would have expected Belgium and Croatia to qualify but looking like only 1 of them will be able to now.

14 of their 26 players born overseas according to this article.

I have a good friend and work colleague from the subcontinent. He jokingly refers to Afghanistan and the UAE as Pakistan’s 2nd and 3rd XI in the context of cricket.

Perhaps the likes of Morocco and Senegal are France 2nds and France 3rds in the same way? :)

Spain would be on 5 and win the group.
Japan and Germany would be tied on 4 points and you'd think Germany would beat them by more than 1 goal which would result in them having a better goal difference than Japan. Japan simply couldn't lose that game if they wanted to qualify.

If Japan & Germany have the same points at the end of the group stage then I think the result of the Japan v Germany group match will determine 2nd place in the group, rather than goal difference.

If (remote but possible) Japan & Costa Rica win the last matches in the group then both Spain & Germany are out.

If Japan & Germany win the last group matches then goal difference (Spain compared to Germany) will decide 2nd place.

Goal difference 1st, then goals scored, then if still the same its the result between the 2.

I checked this last night as I wasn't sure (but suspected it was this case being as its been well reported that Wales need to beat England by at least 4 goals, though they would finish on the same points).

If Japan draw, and Germany win, then Japan are goneski. Massive loss to them last night.

Thanks.

Japan's sluggish display v Costa Rica a huge 'own goal' then....That's the test of tournament football, being able to repeatedly perform at a consistent (good) level in a short space of time.

The Belgium keeper was crap. The disallowed goal just before halftime he just missed it completely. The first goal from the freekick he again completely missed.

1. Group points
2. Group goal difference
3. Group goals scored
4. Head-to-head record
If two teams identical - This is simple, as you look at the result of that one group game. Did one of two teams win that match? If so, they will be ranked highest. If it was a draw, we move directly on to point 5 to split them.
If three teams identical- This is more complicated, as you can't just use individual results because there's three matches to take into account. Effectively, you create a mini-league of just the three games involving the three nations. This mini league is ranked by
4a) points
4b) goal difference
4c) goals scored
If only two teams are still level at the end of this stage, direct head-to-head is not applied and these two teams alone move to point 5. The third team is now locked in position. If all three teams are still level, the order is decided by point 5.
If all four teams identical It won't be possible to separate them on head to head and the group would be decided on point 5.
5. Fair play recordIf any teams still have an identical record after the head-to-head stage, positions are decided by fair play record.
- yellow card: minus 1 point
- indirect red card: minus 3 points
- direct red card: minus 4 points
- yellow card and direct red card: minus 5 points
6. Drawing of lots

I don't think we've ever got to 6 before, but if we did it will probably be England. Always finding new ways to disappoint people, they are innovators at it

1990- Ireland and Netherlands couldnt be split for 2nd place in their group. Ireland won the draw and finished 2nd. Both qualified for the knockout stage though anyway- 6 groups of 4 -24 teams- back then.
Ireland beat Romania in the rd of 16, while the Dutch lost to eventual champs West Germany, so the draw certainly helped Ireland.

Watching the news tonight n the soccer fans over in Belgium have done a fair job of going totally psycho over the game against Morocco. Some serious street riots happening.

Get ready for Serbian riots. So far, 0-1 to Cameroon and still 0 points and 0 goals.

Same with the Dutch.
Bloody nutters, what were they rioting over? Maybe the Clogwogs were just going out in sympathy with their Flemwad neighbours or some such foolishness.
I don’t believe it was the Belgians rioting over losing (or the Dutch in sympathy). It was the Moroccans rioting on the back of their win and perhaps clashing with the Belgian fans. Can you imagine that? Rioting because you won? In fact, in the streets of Belgium, the Belgian fans looked to be heavily outnumbered by those supporting Morocco. Half a million people of Moroccan extraction live in Belgium. And quite a few in the Netherlands also.
