There's a fundamental difference between being a midfielder with a licence to go forward when the opportunity presents and being a player who decides if they play midfield or forward.
Like Leigh Matthews? Or Dustin Martin?a player who decides if they play midfield or forward.
Like Leigh Matthews?
I think you'd be surprised. He would absolutely have had license to move forward and back to mid as he saw fit. (I've had older Tiger fans tell me he usually went forward when he was sick of KB and Barry Cable getting leather poisoning.)I'd be pretty confident Leigh Matthews never played anywhere without the coach putting his magnet on the board there first.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, it looks Dimma has decided he's a forward mainly for now. That might change. I agree, I'd like him to spend more time in the midfield. No issue there, my issue is in the player deciding their core position.
If Dustin is playing as a midfielder who can head forward when he see the chance, great.
But if he is deciding doing that or if he is a forward who can drift into the middle then it's wrong. At the moment it seems he is doing the latter and that's poor coaching.

I reckon that's just a Dimma line. He loves that throwaway "I don't tell Dustin anything" line but it's shtick. The bloke's by Sheeds out of Chocco.Sounds like Dustin has decided.
David Parkin has said the 1995 Carlton side coached itself. They lost two games mid-season to lowly sides, beat everyone else and upgraded to the presidential suites for the end of season trip.IIrc Dimma has said in the past that he let the experienced players "work out" strategies at times, because they were in a position to activate things quicker than getting a message to the runner & him getting out to the players. That comes about because of a lot of communication between players & coach over a long time frame. He trusted their skills & "game experience"
Seems like a good thing to me, definitely not a case of "The tail wagging the dog".
Parkin spoke at a coaching forum and described the 1995 side in terms of Total Quality Management. The players took responsibility for a lot of the team strategy, as well as the responsibility of solving problems as they arose. He said that he wished he could start his coaching career all over again.David Parkin has said the 1995 Carlton side coached itself. Sounds a bit like the Geelong 2011 teamParkin spoke at a coaching forum and described the 1995 side in terms of Total Quality Management. And 2022. Most experienced team ever. A monkey could have coached them to that flag.Sounds a bit like the Geelong 2011 team
Yep so really Scott has only coached a team to one premiership...Sounds a bit like the Geelong 2011 team
Ok. Maybe no flags then...And 2022. Most experienced team ever. A monkey could have coached them to that flag.
Except Ron Barrassi in 1970. And maybe Yabby in '89.Reckon we could take this further, 2021 Grand Final in Perth doesn't really count; 2020 ditto and only playing Geelong; 2019 GWS no opposition; 2018 didn't beat the best side; 2017 Snowy off the tram could coach a flag with Dustin Martin playing like that; 2016 Questionable umpiring.
I'm pretty confident it will turn out that no-one has ever coached a flag ever.
