the idea of the academies is to get talented athletes from the Northern states playing AFL. this year 6(?) of the top 20 came from NSW or Queensland, im guessing in previous years that number would have mostly been 0. so from that point of view they are working.
also linking them to the clubs gievs players more incentive to play AFL as the likelihood they will stay in their home state is markedly increased.
where it falls down, as others have pointed out, is the way points were allocated to picks. the idea that a bunch of late picks equals a top 10 pick is ridiculous.
perhaps if clubs want to be able to bid on a 1st round pick they cannot trade there 1st pick away.
