It's good that Sam Taylor comes up now on the Astbury thread.
Astbury's defensive positioning against smalls in ground contests or just defending is awesome. He sees it coming, he gets between them and the goals and he steps into them not long after they acquire. And he hurts em. Perfect ground ball defence.
Dave is brisk. Not a good turner but brisk. And he's rugged. He reads the fall. (He's nothing much in the air.) But he is unforgiving of opposition headed goalwards. And if he gets a sniff he can acquire.
Sam Taylor is a natural defensive small. He can be outbodied but he's young and he's improved that. Let's not go into the illness and injury but he's had significant setbacks. At ground ball he does not form up like Dave. (Not well coached IMO. And not that type anyway.) But he will halve ground ball against any small. Very strong here.
Taylor is physically underdeveloped. But he can aerial. Get altitude, read it, spoil it. (Not DTL's caper.) But, being physically weak, and naive, he can be exposed by experienced bustlers. Franklin was able to outbody him when the ball was coming in favourably, but in the first half Taylor outclassed Buddy in the air.
Why then do we look better now with DTL back that we did with the apparently more talented Balta?
Because Dave is much more reliable in formation. Sam Taylor is learning formation, as best he can in that side. Noah is learning formation. DTL is The Plug.
