Credit where credit's due to Francis Jackson

It could be Clarke I'm not sure when he took over, I think it might have been after the 2014 draft in which Short, Butler and Castsgna were drafted.
My op wasn't a defence of Jackson, I said that he had been rightfully criticised, my point was that he should be given credit for drafting them. Soldo while unproven was in the same draft, hopefully he might make it as a player, signs are promising.

So wrong ......
Clarke joined Richmond in 2009 after working at Melbourne.
Jackson was first employed as a part-timer in 2004 and full-time in 2005.

Luke Williams joined us in 2013 just weeks before the draft after walking out on Carlton.

Jackson cops a lot of flack, but for me he has been adequate, possibly even above average. Some of the no brainers he got right, Cotchin and Martin were widely considered the best available. But others although not completely left field deserve credit. I never thought Rance would make it, but he, Astbury and Grimes make up one of the best defences in modern times. Credit where it's due.

It's also important to consider the timing in draft picks. Lennon and Corey Ellis were picked while Hawthorn were backing up multiple premierships, elite kicking was considered a premium. However 2014 also brought the thumping in the final by Port Adelaide. Those with a long memory will cast their mind back to Dimmer in the presser after the game, he said that he knew what we needed at the club to address the problems, I don't think I was reaching in assuming he meant we needed better runners. Port ran us off our feet that day.

So that draft Francis took Corey Ellis, but then went for Menadue, Drummond and Butler. Speed, speed and speed. In fairness he was most likely working on building a list to suit Dimmer. Clearly this year somebody other than Dimmer is working the game plan, somebody else has taken us from crayons to perfume. Credit where it's due.

We were a Mickey Mouse club when Jackson was employed on a part time basis, up till then Greg Miller was recruiting players from highlight reels. Francis never had the resources for the first few years when he was employed.

High praise indeed, should put it on his headstone.......

Every club has hits and miss's. When your not going well the microscope always goes on drafting/recruiting.
This year he needs to pick as many talks as possible. 5 picks 5 talls and fingers crossed we find at least one

With the amount of talented footballers and resources the recruiters have, they are always going to find good players somewhere in the draft , my issue with FJs recruiting has been the bad misses in the first 2 rounds, so many players with glaring weakness's and lack of genuine midfielders and competive talls drafted.

Thought i'd go back and have a look at our previous recruiting.

Francis was appointed part time in 2005 and remained in his full time job at Brighton Grammar. That's just over ten years ago, no wonder we have performed so badly with such a low spend on recruitment.

He hasn't had very many EARLY first round picks to choose from, but he has nailed the ones that he has had. He has certainly performed better than those before him.

With the compromised drafts recruiting of young kids hasn't always been a focus, which has been a mistake.

He hasn't done very well at drafting talls, but i'm not sure that it was much of a focus, because there hasn't been many drafted.

There has been improvement in later round picks ( when untried players were a focus) with the increased funding of the recruiting dept.

Wow that's a ton of work to research all this Tigerman well done. Reckon most clubs would have a similar history of hits and misses but we've had more than our fair share of first round misses, especially when the club had no money and KB was coaching from '88 to '91. Then '92 and '93 wasn't much better. Poor old KB was on a hiding to nothing when the club could not support the young players it recruited.

Hope Corey has been shocked and embarrassed by seeing Butler, Menadue, Castagna and Short getting regular senior gigs yet he was taken much earlier in the same draft year! Embarrassed enough to show why he's a better player...I hope.

Cheers tigermike, it doesn't make for pretty reading. With the increased spend on the football department we have got better though.

The 2014 draft of C.Ellis, Menadue, Butler, Short, Lambert, Castagna and Soldo might be somewhat of a saviour, especially if C. Ellis and Soldo can go on and establish themselves as AFL players.

I'll save you some time.

In the ten years Jackson was been involved at Richmond from 2004 - 2013 the only others who remain on the list are:
Edwards 26 in 2006.
Rance 18 in 2007.
Griffith 19, Astbury 35 and Grimes PSD in 2009.
Batchelor 30 in 2010.
Elton 26 in 2011.
McIntosh 31 in 2012.
Lloyd 66 and Miles R27 in 2013.

It may be more useful if you put when they were taken

My apologies Tigerman.
I was wrong and you were correct.
Jackson was part time in 2005.
Should have remembered since there was a lot of talk that JON was taken due to a good video presentation.

Cheers RT

I think he went full time in 2006 and picked Jack and Edwards that year, and then picked Cotchin and Rance in 2007, which was a fairly handy start by him.
