Coronavirus

seemed to go pretty peak normal up here Saturday night.

Byron Bay looked like it was NYE.

I don't think there is really any middle ground between hard lockdown and total freedom anymore?

Morbidly, what's the odds on WA covid in the next 2 weeks and some kind of compromised GF?

I strangely expect its more likely than not.
The lack of any semblance of a National Plan on how to deal with thing has been the Feds biggest failure.
Maybe its a failure of the states doing their own thing but it's a failure none the less & has highlighted the weaknesses in our National structure.
Comical differences that unfortunately the virus couldn't give a flying *smile* about.

One good thing in this outbreak. Checked the Vic health website - zero active cases in Aged Care. Shows that vaccines and safe practice lessons have been learnt.
On the other hand, as aged cares cases were a sizeable proportion of 2020 outbreak, it means this year that community transmission is even worse.

Basic maths would say there is more chance of an outbreak in two weeks than one. Not sure what was going through Gils head.

Seeing pictures of thousands of people on the NSW beaches today (many unmasked) is absolutely infuriating.
WTF are our leaders doing? National Cabinet? Hello? Anyone home?

FFS!
You obviously didn’t see Melbourne’s parks and beaches this weekend? No beaches in the western suburbs of Sydney so not sure they are the reason for the spread. You’re yelling at the wrong crowd and location

Isn’t the likelihood of outdoor transmission very, very low ? If you’re worried about spread it’s the indoor gatherings you don’t see on the news that are the problem not people enjoying a sunny day outdoors

Yeah that's not the problem, unless they are very close together socialising, as some probably are.

agree. Covid has made a Port Adelaide Prelim of our Federation.

Unfortunately we're a federation of independent states. Those daily / weekly National cabinet meetings are nothing more than a Pollie wank fest. They all get together look serious n nod their heads then *smile* off home n do exactly whatever they want in each of their own states.

Yes I'm well aware it's low. That's not the point.
It's the mixed messages & different rules between states that's driving me nuts.
I'd love to be socialising down at the beach but we can't do that in Victoria.

The pandemic has certainly highlighted where the power base largely lies and that’s with the individual states. Each premier doing largely as they see fit. No point getting frustrated with the feds when they haven’t got the power required to enforce a national strategy ( could threaten to cut funding l suppose but what else ?)

I think you (and others raving on about beaches) are upset because our numbers are looking worse than NSW at the same point despite our more stringent rules.
The real question is why? Does the weather play a part? Do people simply have a more outdoor lifestyle in NSW?
What more are we learning about the spread?

Yep we should be getting angry that maybe some of the rules don’t make sense. We should be at the stage now where we can focus more on high risk behaviours (for me this is non mask wearing indoors with strangers).

I wouldn’t be surprised that our rules are actually increasing the spread as it effectively forces people (who are already going to break the rules) to do it indoors given the outdoors is so visible.

Classic where the unintended consequence makes it worse.

I'm positive that if we had strong national leadership that the States would not have gone their own way but now the genie is out and the State Premiers feel empowered to do their own thing.

Reckon this is spot on. If Andrews would release the brakes a bit and let people socialise in less risky outdoor settings they may be less inclined to break the rules and take the meetings indoors where the virus spreads more readily. He is showing Gladys like stubbornness and its is leading to a potentially worse outbreak in Melbourne than what we are seeing in Sydney; the numbers are certainly tracking that way.

Andrews needs to change tack and do it now. It is clear his methods are no longer working.

A primary school in Labor heartland in North Fitzroy has been apparently breaching regulations by inviting students to attend in spite of the lockdown. It is now the source of a substantial COVID outbreak; at least 30 cases.

I wonder if there will be punitive repercussions for the school and the parents who continued to send students?

I find it amazing someone writes an email stating they are breaking the law deliberately to a bunch of parents. And the consequence is that he gets asked to comply with the rules. How this is any different to organising a protest in the CBD I don’t know. It’s actually worse because schools are indoors.

What it screams for us a clear pathway out.

Maybe not....but it is an example of what we are all saying now.
A change is needed away from the rigidity of current rules to allow for optimism and some life enjoyment.
Only those fully vaccinated can be permitted at present but it is overdue.
Allow vaccinated to see vaccinated family, play sport, travel etc...within some covid safe guidelines. Easy to allow.
Do it now..
We will have hundreds of cases no matter what we do.
We allow safe injecting rooms, legalised abortion etc etc, to stop uncontrolled unsafe behaviour.
Do the same with covid vaccinated people... now!

473 today.
Despite tough rules its spreading like wildfire.
So many people must be doing the wrong thing now.

Andrews has got some tough decisions to make. Can't keep people locked in their homes forever.

Think that would depend on whether you liked the direction of the national.leadership.

And this is action from a week ago too you would imagine….

We are fixated on beaches and parks. Sutton has been quite open about sources of spread... workplaces particularly construction, small shopping strip's, supermarkets and then people take it home and it infects everyone.
Whether any more can be done about these sites I don't know but Andrews could take the lead and shut down every state project until we get to 80% vax rate. For a new road due to be finished in 6 years who cares about another two months?
