Coronavirus

Remember I’m in the UK, so it’s a little bit different here. Efficacy after one jab was shown to be effective enough to push out the second jab to 12 weeks, therefore getting more people to at least have their first jab.

ABC news app has a vaccine tracker. Highlight is that ACT is on -2 ...yes negative 2. Maybe to offset the couple that got the extra dose in QLd.
Vic only 100 . liberals slowing supply to make dan look bad? Or are all the vaccine teams under direct control of Federal health with state health sidelined?

Quietest this thread has been since the Pandemic started. Great signs.

Pretty quiet on the new infections front and I think I saw there were 7 active cases at the moment in Victoria.

When you ain't got nothing else, quarantine still works and we effectively quarantined in our own homes. With no cure and no vaccine we pretty much exterminated the virus in our population, it only came in from outside. Something to remember if we ever hit another pandemic and they can't sort out a vaccine for an extended period of time.

Not sure how others feel about it but I actually agree with the decision by Italy to block the shipment of vaccine to us. 300 people a day are dying in Italy and we will be producing the vaccine within a month. They definitely need it more than we do.

yeah, apart from the rudeness of breaking a deal, it seems fair enough. We are in a good space.

yep. I’ve been disappointed at the criticism at our vaccine rollout. We should be the last country getting mass vaccinated given our enviable position.

I won’t say too much MDJ but I do have some knowledge of it.
IMO we are rolling out too fast without being totally ready and the only reason we have done it is because of a political p1ssing match between the feds and the states.

Deaths of Australians in aged care after COVID jabs kept secret

A small number of aged care residents died in the days after they received their COVID-19 vaccination but the deaths were not included in the government’s first official adverse event report.

The government is denying the secrecy surrounding the deaths is a cover up.

There is no evidence the Pfizer vaccine caused the deaths and it is important to note that around 1000 residential aged care residents every week die under normal circumstances.

Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly first revealed the deaths to health industry newsletter BioPharmaDispatch.

Professor Kelly later told News Corp a “handful” of aged care residents had died 24-72 hours after their received the vaccination in the first week of the rollout.

These deaths had been investigated by state and territory authorities, the vaccination provider and the Therapeutic Goods Administration, he said.

In addition Professor Kelly said he had personally examined the initial reports of the deaths.

“Each of them have another explanation, other than vaccine and none of them have had any sign of any adverse events, following the vaccine up until the time that they’ve been found to have passed away,” he told News Corp.

Many of those who died were suffering very long and complex illnesses and they were well before and after the vaccine but a day or two later were found after suffering a cardiac arrest in their bed, he said.

One person had developed a urinary tract infection and sepsis and it was in hospital “so they had a very clear alternative explanation,” he told News Corp.

The coroner is also able to investigate if it was thought the vaccine had played a role in the deaths, Professor Kelly said.

The nation’s top doctor denied there was any attempt at a cover up in the decision to exclude the deaths from the first adverse event reporting on the vaccine.

“I did actually question that myself when the first report came out,” Professor Kelly told News Corp.

“Of course it’s not a cover up,” he told News Corp.

“If there was any, any sniff, any suggestion that this was an event that was actually associated with a vaccine, or could possibly be associated with a vaccine in that initial investigation, then I would take it very seriously,” he said.

The reason the deaths had not been included in the adverse event reporting was that there was no evidence the vaccine caused the deaths, he said.

Professor Kelly said he will consider whether to include such deaths in future reporting along with an explanation about why they had been ruled not to be caused by the vaccine.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the information had not been provided because the government did not want to create a false scare about the vaccine.

“If you had 10 per cent of your age care population (just to make it easy) vaccinated in one week and you’ve got 1000 people to pass away, 10 per cent of that 1000 would have been vaccinated,” he said.

The states and territories reviewed every event, he said.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration which is monitoring the vaccine safety issued its first weekly adverse report event on the COVID-19 vaccine last week.

It reveals there were 79 adverse events related to the vaccine in the first week of the rollout.

In the first week more than 33,700 doses of the vaccines were given to frontline health workers, quarantine staff and aged care residents.

This amounted to just 2.3 adverse events per 1000 doses administered.

Two younger health workers have so far been treated for anaphylactic reactions to the vaccine one on the Gold Coast and another in Darwin.

The most common reactions reported in the first week were: feeling faint, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating.

A small number of elderly people in Norway died after receiving the vaccine earlier this year but these deaths too were found not to be caused by the jab.

Mr Hunt, who received a dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine yesterday, said he was feeling a “little tired” after his jab but this was not necessarily due to the vaccine.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but this is a bad look for the government. Transparency is important to win over the hesitant.

My mum is eligible for the Phase 1b jab and I've encouraged her to get it but she's declining at this stage. This won't help.

You may not be a conspiracy theorist but I reckon the author of that article and the sub editor who wrote the headline might be.

Or maybe they're just after a bit of click bait.

Yes it is written in an accusatory tone suggesting a cover-up, but it's important to look at the substance of the article without being led by the writer. All details should be included in reporting in case there is a problem. We're lucky to live in an advanced country where there is expert oversight of these things.

Agree, the more transparency the better even if idiots and conspiracy theorists try to exploit it.

As an aside many public hospitals are being funded to run services and clinics for adverse reactions to the vaccinations.
There is also a requirement throughout the whole health system (including GPS and aged care) to report any adverse reactions.

The likelihood is that the vaccines have vanishingly low incidence of side effects. But, when you vaccinate millions that means there will be some people who get side effects.

Clearly this should be monitored, as I'm sure it will be.

What we don't need is the click bait sensationalism above which relies on jumping to conclusions. If there is any question about any of the deaths then the coroner will get involved but that takes time. The media have no patience so don't expect any follow up.

Health Minister Hunt in hospital 2 days after getting the AstraZenica jab with an infection? I'm no anti vaxer but that doesn't fill one with confidence.

Sloooo Moooo. 100,000 vaccinated. We were behind a stack of other countries already (despite being a producer) but anyway we were aiming for 684,000 frontliners all done by mid March in phase 1a. No hope now. None. Phase 1b distributors eg GP’s already being told there’s gonna be delays.

USA has dispensed 92 million jabs already and that’s largely with the logistically difficult Pfizer. UK 23 million. Israel has vaccinated nearly their entire country.

To be fair, number of other countries are struggling (Japan with just 70,000) but here’s hoping that now the csl production has finally ramped up that we get a move on and take advantage of our immense AZ manufacturing capability here in Melbourne.

Moooove Sloooo Moooo ! Australia’s great missing man.

Agree but don't restrict it to SloMo, Victoria lagging and can't even keep up with minimal supplies they have received so far.

An infection is not a virus, quite different.

I really can't see a connection here.

Agree not sure why anyone should be alarmed.,

From a published source:

Less than 0.1 per cent of everyone given AstraZeneca’s vaccine reported a serious side effect related to the vaccine.
