Coronavirus

This has been confirmed by a NZ player.
Yes. Evidently there was a meeting hook up information session a couple of weeks ago that she said very few players and coaches attended and she said she was very surprised by that. She said that the risks of flying in with someone who tested positive were clearly explained at that meeting

As I've said before on this subject, tennis is such an individual game that who really cares who comes or if the tournament goes ahead in the midst of a global pandemic? So a few entitled brats can make a million?
It's such a non event right now when so many more important things are at stake. Should have been panned.

Two weeks locked in their rooms... some of them are going to go coco bananas. Expecting some headlines in the next fortnight, from angry texts at the very least!

How many days before "my human rights are being violated"?

The US claims it has explosive new evidence that proves the coronavirus leaked from a research lab in Wuhan, China.

New documents reveal scientists in Wuhan fell ill with COVID-like symptoms in late 2019 - months before the pandemic began to ravage the world.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has demanded the World Health Organisation launch an investigation into the possibility that COVID leaked “accidentally” from the lab in Wuhan.

China has denied accusations that it covered up the real origins of the virus and Beijing has thumbed its nose at international calls for a full investigation into the lab suspected of being the source of coronavirus.

Instead, China has been happy to let the theory roll along that the virus simply hatched in a local wet market in Wuhan and then made its way out into the world, where it has now killed more than two million people.

Mr Pompeo revealed new studies from US intelligence claiming that scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) fell ill in the autumn of 2019 - earlier than previously believed - with symptoms consistent with COVID-19, The Sun reported.

“This raises questions about the credibility of WIV senior researcher Shi Zhengli’s public claim that there was ‘zero infection’ among WIV’s staff and students of SARS-CoV-2 or SARS-related viruses,” Mr Pompeo said.

Top aide to President Trump Matthew Pottinger claimed leaders in China are “admitting” theories suggesting COVID-19 started in a “wet market” are false.

The WHO team is set to look into the “wet market” originally linked to early infections, but there are believed to be no plans to investigate whether the virus accidentally escaped from the lab.

Mr Pompeo called on the WHO to investigate the lab, just one day after a team from the organisation landed in Wuhan.

“Beijing continues to withhold vital information that scientists need to protect the world from this deadly virus, and the next one,” Mr Pompeo argued.

He suggested it was a natural virus that had accidentally escaped the lab, rather than being a man-made virus that was purposelessly released.

A briefing document from the State Department read: “Accidental infections in labs have caused several previous virus outbreaks in China and elsewhere, including a 2004 SARS outbreak in Beijing that infected nine people, killing one.”

The report also suggests that researchers there had been working with a bat coronavirus known as RaTG13, that is 96.2 per cent similar genetically to the virus that causes COVID.

Mr Pompeo also claimed that the lab has military links.

“The WIV has engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017,” he said.

Mr Pompeo wants Beijing to allow the WHO research team access to the Wuhan lab.

The State Department said: “WHO investigators must have access to the records of the WIV’s work on bat and other coronaviruses before the COVID-19 outbreak.

“As part of a thorough inquiry, they must have a full accounting of why the WIV altered and then removed online records of its work with RaTG13 and other viruses.”

It comes after online data related to the lab was deleted - sparking fresh accusations of a cover-up by the Chinese government.

Hundreds of pages of information connected to studies carried out by the top-secret Wuhan Institute of Virology have been wiped alongside key data from a top virologist nicknamed “Batwoman”.

More than 300 studies published by the National Natural Science Foundation of China - including investigations into diseases that transfer from animals to humans - are no longer available, The Mail on Sunday revealed.

The state-run organisation deleted scores of online content, including studies carried out by Wuhan based virologist Shi Zhengli - dubbed “Batwoman”.

‘WORST YET TO COME’ AS COVID DEATHS HIT 2 MILLION (paywalled)

The world has reached the terrible milestone of two million people dead from COVID-19, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, with the US outpacing any other country in numbers of infections and fatalities.

The likely death toll is much higher due to inadequate testing in many countries and questions over the veracity of China’s official figures.

Deaths due to the virus in Latin America, Africa and Russia could be as much as 500 times greater than the official death toll.

Our world has reached a heart-wrenching milestone,” United Nations chief António Guterre said in a video statement.

“Behind this staggering number are names and faces: the smile now only a memory, the seat forever empty at the dinner table, the room that echoes with the silence of a loved one,” he added, calling for global unity to fund vaccination efforts.

The death toll could reach three million by April, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

Due to faster spreading variants of the disease, the World Health Organisation said the situation will get worse.

We are going into a second year of this. It could even be tougher given the transmission dynamics and some of the issues that we are seeing,” said Mike Ryan, the WHO’s top emergencies official.

The theory that COVID was made in a lab had been debunked many times. However when the Chinese actually knew about it is still in question of course.
I do find it interesting that the US is making demands on the WHO after withdrawing funding and basically saying it was complicit early last year.

Pompeo also claimed the election was stolen and that the Trump administration would smoothly transition into a second term.

I've got an open mind as to what an inquiry might find but I wouldn't trust that fat bastard as far as I could throw him.

Listening to Golden Gladys ramble on about the borders & using the media as a tool to criticise others, only serves to isolate her from the rest of the Premiers & further damages NSW.
She's already proven this past year she can't be trusted. Who's in her ear?

Read an article today. Unpaid fines wont need to be paid. Just make me laugh.
Was told ages ago by someone who used to work for the government that the fines could not be enforced in court. Think it was along the lines the way the legislation was brought forth and had not gone through a certain process and there were legality issues.

I dont know if true or not. Dan kept saying all fines will be enforced probably trying to scare people into paying. Well the backflip. Fines serve a purpose ( I get it) as a determent.

Just the Trump idiots trying to make trouble before they leave. On a par with the recent claim that Iran are sheltering Al Qaeda (Iran hate Al Qaeda). I have absolutely no trust in the lies they peddle.

NSW have been handling it differently compared to the other states. On one hand you can say they have done a bloody great job. But on this occasion, they were too slow to act. Yes, it appears they do have it under control… but if they had a 7-10 day lockdown initially, you could argue state borders would be open again by now. They are also the only state that does not count hotel quarantine numbers in their official stats.

Federal government seeks information from Norway after deaths in the elderly after Pfizer vaccine (paywalled)

Snip

The government has been under pressure to roll out the Pfizer vaccine quickly after several overseas countries granted approval for its emergency use. But it stood firm in insisting that the TGA go through a thorough review process of the vaccine. The government has emphasised that in holding off until the vaccine can be fully assessed, Australia has the benefit of examining post-release data on the vaccine from other nations who have approved it.

Gee Natasha, where might that pressure have come from, maybe the article you wrote not more than a few days earlier? You know, the one where you found all sorts of quotes to push your argument that we drop the AstraZeneca vaccine and promote the Pfizer vaccine?

No wonder I avoid the Murdochian.

Golden Gladys cherry picks what she tells the media.
Never mentions the 19 unlinked or untraced cases as well as 122 active cases caused by Hotel quarantine breaches.
Their testing numbers are about a 3rd of where they need to be to get an idea what's really happening in the community.
No wonder the other Premiers don't trust their official figures & are hesitant to re open completely.

Victoria Police will pursue outstanding fines for COVID-19 breaches (paywalled)
Brendan Rees & Shannon Deery
Herald Sun
January 18, 2021

Victoria Police says it will uphold any outstanding fines for COVID-19 breaches, declaring its policy remained unchanged for rule-breakers.

“Since the outset fines are issued to people who blatantly and deliberately breach the Chief Health Officer’s directions and put fellow Victorian at risk,” Victoria Police deputy commissioner Rick Nugent said at a press conference on Monday.

Mr Nugent blamed a “poorly worded” internal guidance note that gave the impression that COVID rule-breakers could escape unpaid fines.

“A guide was prepared for prosecutors and police with respect to prosecuting fines,” he said. “In hindsight, that document was poorly worded and doesn’t appropriately articulate the process for fines and warnings.

He acknowledged there had been “some commentary” regarding its policy for the prosecution of COVID-related fines.

“I just want to say from the outset Victoria Police has not changed our policy or its policy on the issue of fines.”

Mr Nugent said while frontline police can “utilise discretion”, he maintained: “Our policy has not shifted. We still continue to give fines for blatant breaches.”

He confirmed the guidance note would be changed this week.

More than 30,000 fines have been reviewed, Mr Nugent said, with a “percentage” withdrawn as “they found they weren’t consistent with the (Chief Health Officer’s) directions”.

“I can say approximately 3000 have been paid,” he said, adding about 5700 had “accepted guilt and are on a payment plan.”

“We went through a very hard lockdown in this state; we had a second wave that was challenging for everybody,” Mr Nugent said.

“Our police did an outstanding job in enforcing the public health and wellbeing, and doing all we could to ensure that the virus did not spread further.”

It comes after Daniel Andrews hinted at his frustration over what was believed to be a police decision not to pursue outstanding fines for breaches of COVID-19 rules.

Almost $30 million of fines were handed out to rule breaking Victorians, yet thousands of fines remain unpaid.

After it was revealed in October that just 845 fines of the 19,324 issued to that time had been paid Mr Andrews warned fine dodgers “we will come after you”.

“If you want to avoid a fine, follow the rules,” he said.

“It’s very simple and there are many more warnings that have been issued than fines,” he said at the time.

Mr Andrews on Monday refused to be drawn on the issue, but said his stance on fine dodgers hadn’t changed.

“But I’m not the one that’s in charge of those matters, the Chief Commissioner is,” he said.

“He can speak to what he’s done, and why he’s done it. I’m not about directing the Chief Commissioner.

“By law of this state he has an independence that is very, very important, not always convenient necessarily, but it’s something that should be safeguarded,” he said.

Earlier on Monday, police association secretary Wayne Gatt told 3AW the decision would make ongoing enforcement more difficult.

“None of this was fun for our members. It was a bit of a thankless job,” he said.

“What you potentially do is … you make that enforcement job of the police a little bit harder.

“We don’t want to do that. The job is tough enough for them.

“You need to be careful that if you say you’re going to do something, you actually do it, because the people that are harmed are the people on the front line that are then asked to enforce and hold it all together in a time of crisis.”
