Coronavirus

It's the cases in blue and grey that are important. If that gets out of control then we are in more trouble. Right now it's being contained reasonably well, doesn't mean we can drop the ball. At least half of the deaths are from cruises and most others nursing homes. Those cruise boats coming back and people disembarking freely a bit of a kick in the head. Never should have been allowed to happen considering we know how quickly the virus has spread on boats all over the place.

Yep.

So like many Australians and people around the world , I’ve become one of unemployed .

Really gutted that I thought that our jobs were considered an ‘essential service’ but that all changed last night.

Two colleagues called me last night and said we have been ‘ stood down’ effective immediately.

How work did this was via email, yes email.

- Not having the decency to meet with staff through the week to discuss the situation , maybe offer some sort of alternatives

- The new term used. Stood down! What does that actually mean? Another word for sacked’?

- Not offering redundancies to save $ but directing us to MyGov website.

-Telling is that if things improve we are valued and we will return to work.

-To access your leave, if you have, accrued Long Service Leave ( which I fall short ) and unpaid leave.

-Gutless , spineless , soulless decision without consultation via email and according to our CEO a difficult decision to make and apologised to the staff that it came to this. A decision which they would have been in the pipeline as no staff were taking their incentive ( take 4 days leave and we will give an extra 1 day)!

- They have kept staff that have been there less than a year, some a few weeks, yet got rid of its most experienced people! All got to do with $ as they would have had to pay these people more so it’s easier to keep them on than us!.

-My Wifes industry is hanging on by a thread so it would be a test of many things to keep us going.

-Third time this has happened. Last time my first marriage ended, lost everything and my second marriage now I thought would bring many people joy but the anger, frustration, resentment I’m feeling at how this occurred through no fault of us Australians & many people around the world who have also lost loved ones to this virus.

-I’m glad that my mum is safe and she is close to me if she needs me. I’ve had to self isolate myself from her because I couldn’t trust others at work, shopping centres doing the right thing.

-I’m fortunate I have a gym set up at home that I can exercise as I will have more time on my hands. I will become a full time chauffeur for my wife taking her and picking her up from work.

-I’m deciding whether I should email the CEO and let my feelings on behalf of many 100’s of staff who lost their jobs, have bills to pay, mouths to feed who just got treated so poorly. Maybe he and his fat mates at head office could do the right thing like many out there have done and take a pay cuts. Doubt they will.

If you hear a crazy guy on 3AW this week it’s crazy me!

-Got sick when my first marriage collapsed and lost it all.Took out all my super last time and it has taken me many many years to build that up and now I’m faced to do it again to take care of my family .

-There are people worse off than me. Sure is! There are staff close to retirement who are stuffed now.

Waiting over and out !

THANK YOU CHINA
Totally agree on everything you said. Been there before many times. What else would you expect from these a-hole execs. Would I detect ageism in this?

I just like how we are in national lock down and fuel prices are through the floor that all of a sudden we hit school holidays here annnnnnnnnnnnndddd.......

Fuel miraculously still manages to find a way to go up 30 odd cents a litre .when the majority arent going anywhere ......................thieving bastards.

Just found out a friend of mine has tested positive. She flew back from the UK 2 weeks ago. Was issued a SHN and fell ill about 4 days ago.

She's admitted to a local hospital but seems OK at the moment.

Corona just became a little more real.

Tourists should be encouraged to return home ASAP. They should not be taking hospital beds due to reckless behaviour ahead of Australians.
There are plenty who would like to but they can’t get out. I have friends from Europe who paid a ridiculous amount a couple of days ago to fly to Europe and even then had to go to the US first.
They tried for over a week to get any type of flight.

My niece left a week ago and another friend around 4 days ago back to Europe. There aren't many flights now though.

National carriers should be used to repatriate citizens at government expense world wide. Not like there’s a shortage of planes and crew.

Mate's parents were on a two-month cruise to Antarctica. Cruise cut short, docked at Argentina, no planes leaving, had to make their way to Uruguay for a flight home @ $5500.

Age and sex demographics of the NSW cases. Certainly not just an old man's disease, unless all the old men have girlfriends in their 20s

Largest group is people in their 20s. No surprise given all the dickheads on Bondi beach last week. Replicated on a smaller scale on St.Kilda beach yesterday.

They obviously think the virus won’t effect them

My step sister and her partner in LA have been told by their doctor they most likely have COVID19 but don'tmeet the criteria to be tested.
They're self isolating, but how would they know when they can go out again if they can't get tested?
And how many more in the states and around the world are in the same boat? USA is in deep *smile*

Yes David, these companies want to make money, they want to be the best offer available.

Gawd, it's teach economics time now I suppose.

You do know what an oligopolistic market is I presume, you have seen what this does to demand and supply curves (hint: they go up the vertical axis which is price). Most markets are oligopolies and our utility markets are definitely oligopolies. There is always tacit collusion in an oligopoly, or price leadership by one or a few firms.

The utility companies will try and profit as much as they can from this situation, just like the health providers in the US are. In doing so the opposite of what you say will happen: consumers won't get a better deal, they will get screwed.

Get out of your free market lala land and look at the real world.

It is the free market and firms are offering the best deal they can . . . yeah right.

Need to get some exercise and I am missing out on my usual bike ride to work as I'm working from home.

So, today went for a ride. On my own and I tend to ride on the road so not near anyone else.

Rode into the city to see what was happening. Quiet but certainly not desolate. Most people keeping their distance and quite a few shops still open - I noticed a chemist (fair enough) but also a fancy brand of watches had their doors open too (hmm!).

I ride along the beach and there were people on the beaches but they were in groups distancing from each other, the problem is, how do you allow people to have a break outside and keep their sanity while keeping the numbers at a level where transmission of the virus is unlikely? Not easy but if we keep the number of people at the beach low and others at parks or whatever then hopefully we can allow some movement and exercise without risking mass transmission of the virus.

Lots of people cycling, most just slowly riding around. Not a bad way to exercise as you can keep your distance. We all need to keep well and maintain some exercise while mainly cooped up at home.

Waiting: stood down means you theoretically get to go back to work when the stand down period ends. But you would have to wonder if there will be a job to go back to. I think all our thoughts are with you and others who have lost their jobs. Hope you can sort something once this is over, or even earlier.
