Changes v Aints

Out: Players who fumble. All of them.
In: Dont care as long as they dont fumble.

Boy did Higgins have a case of the fumbles, sadly in some key moments in the last too. Should be dropped on form.

Subject to fitness.
In: Cotch Edwards, Lambert, Astbury, Bolton.
Out: Higgins, Menadue, Butler, Broad, Rioli

Naish keeps his spot - some beautiful weighted kicks out of defense.
Chol keeps his spot - offered more than Soldo, needs to keep building his tank, will get better once he realizes he can play AFL footy and he belongs at that level. Still 2-3 years away from fulfilling his potential

Id have Chol over soldo won't win as many taps but that is irrelevant as we lose the clearences regardless. Chol is a better player around the ground and can play tall or is goos at ground level and has pace. Higgins out for Cotchin butler or castagana out for Bolton, Astbury for manadue hopefully Lambert in for one of rioli/ Castagna butler

Leaped for 2 hangers but didn't grasp the ball. Exciting to watch. Just needs to build a tank for 1sts as he's only played 2 games in 3 years.

Higgins must get dropped. He does have good hands and he is delivers the ball well but simply going through a form/confidence slump. It wasn't just one fumble, it was slippery but he more than most just could not find the handle. Rioli and Butler (ZERO tackles) went MIA when on the ground for far too long, Castagna at the very least you could see the chase and was picking up disposals around the ground, intent and effort way ahead of the other two amigos.

agree with most -
Higgins needs a spell in VFL to freshen up;
Menadue is not an AFL player, way too timid. He make Corey Ellis look like Braveheart. surely they can see that now;
Rioli, Castagna and Butler are all out of form (dilemma for selectors);
Ellis is back to his old frustrating habits (but he will survive coz dimma likes him);
Garthwaite - not exactly sure what they see him (he looks so robotic and slow) but he's only young and hopefully get better with more games;
Balta looked exhausted (maybe the break will be enough?);
Chol looked much better than Soldo around the ground and as a resting forward so might get another crack at it;
Naish looked okay (but looked like a boy against men) will only get better as he plays more at the level;

Ins:

Hopefully Cotch, Edwards, Astbury, Lambert will all be fit
Bolton must come in with our small forwards playing so poorly

We cant win a flag from here. But the year has already been profitable and the process of blooding young players should continue with a conservative approach taken with players returning from injury, particularly from muscle tissue injury.

In no particular order youngsters Baker, Balta, Bolton, Chol, Rioli, Ross and Stack are our future and when fit should be kept in.

(I don’t know if the decision to drop Bolton had something to do with salary negotiations with Ralph. if it did that was madness as was the decision not to bring him back for the Adelaide game. With the conditions and Lynch and Chol contesting in the forward line and his courage plus his speed and accuracy, he could have made the difference)?

Anyway v Saints and pending form in the VFL tomorrow,
In Bolton Edwards Markov Turner
Out Broad Garthwaite Higgins Menadue (all omitted, with consequent positional changes especially in
defence required).

B McIntosh Balta Grimes
HB Stack Edwards Captain, Houlie
C Bolton Martin Vice Captain, Ellis
HF Rioli Castagna Butler
F Caddy Lynch Baker
R Chol Graham Prestia
I/C Markov Naish Turner Valistuin
Em Collier-Dawkins

out..butler..higgins..menadue..cartwright..ellis or rioli

Just to add to this .....Daniel Rioli's tackling was a huge factor in 2017 - but looking at Footywire stats yesterday his tackling stats per game are in the bottom half of the team. Way below where he was. To me he seems like he is struggling with an injury or just the physicality of the game. I hope he can get back to his 2017 form....we need him.

Yes. The game evolves. Teams have worked out how to counteract the 2017 game plan. Butler, Castagna, Rioli worked then but is a liability now.

Rioli was better last night but I'd agree that the two things he needs to focus on are getting to more contests and tackling - like he did in 2017.

Out for me are: Higgins (needs midfield time in VFL); Butler for good (huge disappointment); Chol (not up to it at AFL level - few cameos aren't enough); Menadue (not up to AFL level); Garthwaite (sorry but not good enough and never will be. Might be a great young bloke but he's never going to be AFL elite). I'd drop Ellis for good but that won't happen. If not Ellis, then Naish goes - not big enough yet.

Ins would be: Cotchin, Lambert, Soldo (only because we have to have a ruckman get his hands on the ball at centre bounces); Astbury, Edwards & Bolton.

From there on, it has to be form dictating who gets in. That said, Caddy's form is awful; Castagna & Rioli too inconsistent and question marks on Broad.

Castagna wasn't the worst, don't see him getting dropped with Butler/Ellis/Higgins/Menadue all in worse form.

Dimma reckons we will have four or five of our usual best 22 back so that is going to help the situation as long as we keep a nucleus of the impressive kids in to gain experience. He also mentioned Short could be back soon but don't see a place for him the way Stack is playing unless stack is moved into midfield.
If we have Astbury, Cotchin, Lambert and Edwards with possible Soldo available then Garthwaite, Choi, Menadue, Higgins and Butler could make way even though Dimma doesn't like wholesale changes as a rule

If Short plays a couple of good games in the VFL he should come in to replace Ellis. No wait, Ellis by then will have played his good one game in five and that will convince selectors that he should stay in the side.

In - Cotchin, Edwards, Astbury, and Bolton.

Out - Ellis, Butler, Higgins, Garthwaite, Menadue, Naish take your pick.

Believe he managed to take one very nice high mark on the night, he also went back n probably got in Lynch's way with another attempt then almost buttered up with a toe poke at the loose ball, but only managed a point with the effort.
Was far from our worst against the Crow baits, but still got plenty of work to do. We know he can play some very good footy at VFL level, just need to keep pushing him up to see exactly what he can bring to AFL level.

Just a bit of left field thinking, play Naish, Bolton on the same wing rotating between there, bench and forward
