Will be a sad day for Ben. Probably saw himself being a 10 yrplayer earning good $$ living in the bubble of AFL. Now he will be like many ex AFLplayers chasing cash in the ‘burbs.
I hope we offer him a spot in the VFL side but I think you're right, he will take the money and kick a ton in the burbs.

Can't blame him for having a go, but delaying the inevitable IMO. Gunna have to work for a living like the rest of us.

Ha! No he won’t. He will get 1000+ a week to play second division football somewhere with ease.

I watched Ben Lennon's grand-final game more intently than most. I'd had a reasonable bet on the Tiges to win both premierships. At half time I thought we were absolutely gone so I had my eye out for a scapegoat. Ben Lennon's much-vaunted bludging led my eyes to him.

He was good. He didn't let his man off the chain. Ran, in his best imitation of Kane Lablett, both ways. And gave it his all. When he got the shot to seal the game I knew for a cold hard fact that he couldn't possibly kick it because he was gassed.

I was a little surprised at Fly's subtle criticism of him. More or less - 'He would usually kick that goal'. There was no way known he could kick it in the circumstances. He was *smile*ed. From endeavour. Two-way running. He could just keep up. And maybe Fly thought Lennon could've trained a it harder. Dunno.

After that game there is no way any club would poach Ben Lennon to play at VFL level. He is no star there. AFL level? Is that meant to be a cruel joke?

Ben Lennon never had the athleticism/physique to play AFL football as an outside mid/HFF/HBF. He had to get an inside game. He didn't. There is no position on the ground called James Aish. Slows play inside at ground level or they don't play at all. Don't worry about the two exceptions - this is the rule. A marking target? Are we back to the position called James Aish? There isn't one.

On to Ben's ego. Lennon's limitations were no secret to him. He was painfully aware of them despite the bluster. Nobody called his manager at season's end. He didn't have to nominate for anything. His phone number is no secret. Unwanted, the story emerges that Ben's going to play NFL. He's not a nobody. He has a future. (Can he do anything else?)

Ben Lennon's story is one of endeavour and failure. He gave what he had on that fateful day in September and maybe he only won a single new fan. But he took the shot, like he did in his career, and everything came up short at the same time. I admire him for so baldly risking it.

And I don't give a *smile* how deluded he is. I'll take idiot ambition over brilliant despair. I hope he gets a miracle NFL gig.

A story of backing yourself.
I'm good mates with Darren Bennett.
Before trying his luck as a NFL kicker, he was a washed up hack, playing reserves for Melbourne, with two dodgy knees and working full time at the Dandenong C.E.S
( Commonwealth Employment Services ) handing out dole cheques.
The rest is history. Fortune favours the brave.
Good luck Ben.

The real question over this saga - and all the other sagas - is have we learned anything? The club that is. This time we just may have, looking at recent drafts.

I was just looking at the players on the RFC site and they have not updated it yet for next year and I was reminded that Ben Lennon wore number 7 and was thinking that this number has been a bit of a dud number of late at the RFC for quite with only Michael Mitchell, Ashley Prescott and Marc Dragacevic coming to mind since as being any good in that Guernsey since Mick Malthouse. Draga was a very good player but he was very unlucky with his leg which cruelled his career.

Think there are also bugger all 100 game players in that number too.

Hopefully the next player has more luck with this number.

Certainly was Ollie. Distinctly recall him wearing it on a lace up jumper in the 1980 GF win.

Not a bad player, Tenacious.

Wayne Wotsisname? Busy player. Wilson?

Anyway. We have to go back a ways to find 7s who could actually play.

Interesting.
Malthouse played 121 games for Richmond but his first two years were in 22 and 28 respectively and totalled 22 games.
So he only played 99 games for Richmond in #7.
Has anyone played 100 in #7 and if not, is that the lowest number not to have a 100-game player?
