Attrition and the four champions

off hand, I can think of only 3 footballers who demonstrated as little regard for the welfare of their own body on a footy field as our great captain, Trent Cotchin

Jon Brown
Luke Ball
and David Bourke.

Marlion Pickett probably makes the shortlist also.

I think Glen Archer would be at the top of my list.

The great champion Chimp Kazoo.

Jack Riewoldt. All-time great.

Legend Shane Edwards

And all-time great defender Bachar Houli.

We don't know which limb, which joint or structure is most worn and torn. And we don't know whether the recent or impending surgeries will be effective or rapid.

This quartet is easily top ten for us. Some would argue that Cotchin is irreplaceable. They all are to some extent.

They have strength. God, give them durability.

How dare you not have Castagnfield not on that list.
All those bludgers were there before the great one arrived.
Cotchin 12 seasons 3 cups
Martin 11 seasons 3 cups
Edwards 13 seasons 3 cups
Castagnfield 4 season's 3 cups.
Bingo

Without Vickery leaving and Griffens retiring.
We would all still be watching highlights of the 95 season.
They are the ones that made us great by leaving

I suppose we are still on Cap'ns original notion of durability?

but just to tighten the terms of reference a little,

Jack Riewoldt often demonstrates flagrant disregard for his body.

So yeah, I think we all agree, him and Cotchys ligaments and cartilage won't facilitate too many more games.

whereas, other than by Buddy's elbow on his temples, Sheds has barely ever been touched.

Dusty is the same. One the rare occasion he is tackled properly, he just kind of yields, like a 2yo going floppy when being picked up without consent, to minimise the cartilaginous wear (Ablett Camel: Cotchin Straw)

I reckon Dusty will go to 36

They're all hard to replace Dyer'ere, with Jack the hardest.
I reckon we've got the players to do an adequate job.
Chimp - Jack G
Shedda - Bolton
Houli - Stack
Jack - Balta or CCJ
We just need the like of Ross, RCD, Dow and Martyn etc to come in and have decent careers.

I would be keen on starting the transition this year.
For the first half of the season it's prioritise the youth, then from r13 its all about the best 22.
*round 1 is the premiership team*

Ideally by r12 we would get:
10 games into Jack Ross
5 into Dow
5 into RCD
8 into CCJ
5 for Paddy Naish
6 into Chol
6 games into Garthy
Plus games into Martyn, Hugo, Miller

Effectively that means 2 young mids and 1-2 young talls play each week.
Senior players Cotch, Lambo, Jack, Houli, Dave ... are periodically resting.

sending the youthful, pliable and thick cartilage into the early forays,

has certainly been a conspicuous part of our premiership campaign strategy.

I agree completely with this TD, although I'd give young Rioli and Mansell a debut also.

Andy Goodwin put his body, and nose on the line, I read somewhere that his nose had been broken over 20 times. Andy was a man after my own heart.

Despite being a great champion I’m not sure I agree on the decision to give Bachar another year tbh. Repeated calf strains would have seen his GF heroics as a timely exit.
Has he officially re-signed yet?

Jack has another year in him but we really need to start seeing a transition now. The like of Balta, CCJ or Chol need opportunities to improve up fwd if they’re to take over. I think Jack will be very hard to replace though. Just such a smart player with burning desire.

Cotch has another 2 left (if he wants it) but he too will start to be managed. Another virtually irreplaceable in terms of big moment leadership & club culture.

Shedda is immortal.
