Nordland

The Nordland is said to have originated in the very early times somewhere in the east before coming to Norway. The Nordland lived in the northern part of Norway for centuries. The Nordland ponies developed differently in different districts resulting in two types of ponies because of crossbreeding with other breeds. The one from Lyngen in northern Troms is larger and sturdier and the one from Norland in the district of Lofoten is smaller with a heavy mane and tail. The Nordlands numbers declined after World War II and the breed was near extinction. Due to the sparse numbers, breeding the Nordland was difficult.

Don
http://www.terrific-horses.com/breeds/don.asp

The Don originates from Russia in the steppes around the Don River. Its ancestry dates back to the horses of the nomadic tribes. The Don were left to breed and roam in herds on the pastures of the Don steppes in the 18th and 19th centuries. The very early influences to the breed include Mongolian Nagai (horses of northern Iran), Persian Arabians, Turkmene (desert horse), and the Karabakh. The Don was significantly improved with crosses from the Orlov, the Anglo-Arabian, and the Thoroughbreds. No other outside influence has been introduced since the beginning of the 20th century.

Trakehner

http://www.terrific-horses.com/breeds/trakehner.asp

The Trakehner is an older breed originating in what used to be East Prussia and is now part of Poland. The Order of Teutonic Knights established the Trakehnen studs early in the thirteenth century. Schweiken ponies were used as a base and the results were plain and often ordinary, but sturdy and strong. The Schweiken Ponies were descendants of the Konik Pony through the primitive Tarpan. The Trakehner displays the amazing natural strength and powers of stamina the Tarpan possessed. During 1732 the Trakehners had reputation as an elegant coach horse. In the early 1800's Thoroughbred blood began to be introduced in small quantities to improve the horse to be efficient for riding during wartime as well as working of Prussian farms during peacetime. The goal was to add to the size, courage, spirit and stamina of the Thoroughbred to the bulk, strength and dignity of the native breed. Further breed enhancement came with the addition of Arabian blood.

Selle Francais

The Selle Francais also known as the Cheval de Selle Francais or the French Saddle Horse originated in Normandy in the stud of Le Pin. The breeding of the Selle Francais began in the early 19th century when local Norman mares were used as base stock. The mares were then bred with English Thoroughbreds, half-bred, and Norfolk Roadster stallions. These horses were considered to be French half-bred competition horses until December of 1958 when they became known as the Cheval de Selle Francais. After the Second World Ward the base stock of Norman mares were significantly decreased. The breeding once again continued, due to the demand, with crossbreeding from the Norman mares and Thoroughbred stallions such as Ultimate and Furioso.
