Adds on PRE

Always like to click on add banners on free sites, and for the most PRE have been sweet.

Anyone notice the adds at the moment? Free TV's, Lotto, dating agencies that are pretty risque?

I'm no prude nor no fool, but the adds are pretty ordinary. Even seen a game add where the picture suggests, well........

The ads are being trialled and feedback will be taken on board. I haven't noticed the risque dating agencies so would appreciate a link when they show up so I can check them out.

A lot of similar ads show on various web-sites, including the newspaper ones. They are a way for sites to cover costs without charging for usage.

Our actual hosting is a lot cheaper than it used to be with Netfirms, therefore the site isn't as expensive to run as it used to be, but I'd guess taking everything into account, (hosting-prizes-postage-higher isp plan to allow for extra bandwidth- support etc) it would cost me towards a $1000 anually. I'd find it a tad disappointing if people couldn't ignore the ads, I hardly notice them myself, in order to cover our costs.

It's been suggested we have a subscription, as some other sites do, for PRE but I've opted against that. I don't solicit for donations like some sites do, in fact have turned offers in the past down because I don't think it fair that some people pay and some don't.

Out of interest do you feel the same about RFC being sponsored by a betting agency duke? I wasn't a fan of a recent club e-mail encouraging people to sign up for the agency. It was blatant use of our database for advertising and mentioned no benefit to club or supporters at all. That's just me though. I still have no issues with them doing it. I can unsubscribe if I don't like it personally. I turned down big money to have a permanent banner on PRE for a betting agency because I didn't think it belonged on a family website. We'd all have different moral and ethical values depending on our own beliefs and circumstances.

We have an agreement not to have "adult" content in the ads. I'd appreciate any inappropriate ads being reported so I can ask for them to be removed.

Chances are all ads will be removed in the near future anyway once we weigh up the pros and cons of the trial.

(Edit- All care is taken to have the ads as least invasive as possible. Smaller banners, and despite them being far more profitable we won't have pop ups, on forum link highlighting, pop unders, ads between posts on threads etc. I've requested to have the smiley one that makes the noise removed, and it was for a while but appears to have found it's way back into the loop)

Hi Rosy,
I dont find them obtrusive, its just that I click on most times so that the traffic looks good from the site. Do at rfc site too.
No problem with Luxbet either.
I cant remeber the dating agency, but on the banner was a very nice looking lady on all fours in a not so covering dress, that may have been what caught my eye on that one ;D
PRE is great, and I understand the need for income, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the reply duke. If anyone finds ads inappropriate I'd appreciate a pm with a link so I can check them out and request their removal if necessary. Will probably get rid of them all sooner rather than later anyway,

Is anyone else having problems with the advertising banner at the top and bottom of each page? Every time it tries to launch, my anti-virus software at work doesn't like the adglobe7 website and it reports it as adware every time I open a new page.

It is starting to get a bit annoying. I keep having to explain to the administrator why I keep wanting to go to a dodgy site.

Someone else had a similar problem TOT and solved it by adding the address to his log of ok URLs. I've sent you a PM.

Those porno looking adverts are becoming more prevalent Rosy :(

I'm not overly fussed but my daughter gives me weird looks and the missus just belted me over the head with a pillow :smash

I don't think they're really becoming more prevalent. When we started they were about our only ad. Since our traffic figures have kicked in we have dozens of different ads. They seem to appear in cycles. I've kept watch for the last hour or 2 since I read your post Hay, and haven't seen the ad once. I have asked for it to be removed from the loop but it shows up occasionally. It's nothing to do with porn, although I think it's ridiculous advertising, so might be an idea to show that to anyone who is concerned at your viewing habits.

Thanks for watching out Rosy. I haven't seen it since either. Must admit the first time I saw it I thought is was some sort of "pop up bug" thing. It certainly wasn't something I expected to see on PRE.

Usually I take little notice of the ads anyway, as the posts/reply stuff usually is on the bottom half of the screen. When others say "what is that?", I say "what do you mean?" and they then mention that advert. So I guess I became more aware. As you say it is more ridiculous than anything, and probably counterproductive to the advertiser.

Are you seeing it as a pop-up ad? That would be a big concern. They can make a lot of money sites which use them but I refuse to have them on PRE and will look into it immediately if anyone experiences pop-ups.

I did a bit of research when the Travian ads first appeared and there seems a lot of criticism of their token lady's pose on the banners. They seem to be using different ads more now but the offending one still appears at times.

More confusion at my end I think Rosy. I was using an advert blocker but then changed browers. In the meantime PRE adverts probably added the more interactive ads above the fixed(Lifesaver Home Loans) adverts.

I'm surprised, considering you have issues with the ad, that you'd copy it on here for everyone to see, and them to have permanent advertising, rather than e-mail it to me.

I've asked for adult content ads to be removed/blocked from our site. We don't have very many of them thankfully. I hope this one slips from the loop or is banished soon but I have no control over that myself.

I don't know what else I can do other than remove the ads completely which I intended to do if they didn't pay enough to cover our costs. They actually contribute a reasonable amount of $ to the site though. If the majority want them removed they'll get the chop but there have only been a couple of complaints from the thousands who access PRE each day.

I'll contact the advertising company again but other than doing that I don't quite get what you want sorry Hay.

Just doing what you requested on a thread specific to the issue Rosy.

As I said initially I'm not overly fussed about them but my wife and daughter thought they were "inappropriate". By all means edit out the pic from my previous post if you wish.

No worries Hay. I can't report the ad from the image you posted. I'd need the actual URL.

No worries. :)

Sound in the advertising banners? It is getting annoying, and is now making me reluctant to visit PRE.

I haven't noticed any sound from the ads recently but did ask for a particular noisy ad to be removed from the loop when we started.

How frequent are the ads with sound? Which particular ads have sound? When I have further info to pass on to the company that runs the ads I'll look into it further.

As for being reluctant to visit PRE because of it that's a personal decision. I guess we all have to weigh up pros and cons of different sites and decide whether we consider them worthwhile visiting or not.

Our PRE ads made very good money last month which was surprising when things are quiet in the off-season. I've said they were on trial, and feedback is taken into account, but I think overall they are worth persevering with. They will certainly cover the costs of running the site which I've paid for myself for many years. That mightn't be much of a concern to others but is certainly a bonus for my family. I guess I have to weigh that up against the inconvenience experienced by people who use the site. No doubt in an ideal world we wouldn't have ads.

I hope to send everyone a bulk e-mail soon inviting input in regards to improving the site so it will be interesting to see what feedback and suggestions we receive, if any, in regard to the ads.

Is anyone else hearing the sound on the ads that NY is referring too? I've had my speakers on since it was mentioned and haven't heard anything at all. Just wondering if it might be different for o/s users. I'm not sure if ads are targeted for different areas or not although I doubt that would be the case.

I have never heard the sounds Rosy.
The spammers are very clever.
Is New York Tiger based in the US? The spammers can probably target geographic areas.

2c.

Thanks poppa. Yep NY is in the US so hopefully he'll let me know which ads have the noise, and possibly the URL address for them, so I can ask the tech people what the go is.

Hey Rose,

Appreciate the cost aspect, and understand why the ads exist - never had problem with them in the past, it has just been the last three months. What makes it worse is that there are 2 ads on every page, so in some cases I get 2 "noise adverts" over one another.

The interesting thing is the sound never matches the visual advertising.

Here is one of the offenders.
