Adam Saad

Essendon makes it easy for Saad to get some of those stats as the is the go to player for run and carry so is on the receiving end of of other defenders work.

In the games Markov played Short and then Houli were also in the run and carry group so our game plan shares the duties around.

In 2020 over 70% of his possessions were uncontested

We already have a quarterback in Short who is far better by foot left or right. And yes you are right that Markov is quick but being 10% faster than Saad is a huge plus.
Yes, all good points. I daresay that the ball is in the backline a bit more playing for the Bummers too than in our defence. But the key point is also the one Taz made - Saad has played more than 4 times more games. Oleg hasn't even reached that vital 50 game marker yet where an AFL player starts to feel that they really belong at the level, and show more of their capacities. Markov may have a heap of upside yet. Saad gets a little more TOG too.

Besides beating him for actual speed (there's some GPS stat that allegedly shows Oleg is super-quick but know little about how it works) another factor is their relative height. Oleg is 10cm taller at 188cm; the advantage manifests in how Lego marks better even this early in his AFL career. It means Markov can take the oppo 3rd tall, maybe a Rohan type for both speed and aerial ability. Whereas Saad I think is best on SFs only although he does compete ok aerially for his size.

Overall, as I have already posted before, we have talent lined up about 4/5 deep for this role. Just no pressing need. If Houli wants to retire and we decide to cut Naish/Stack and/or Turner (I sure wouldn't but with lists and cap reduced, who knows?) I think our needs are far greater elsewhere:

Ruck - Nank unsigned? Soldo gone for 2021. CCJ ? Chol? Urgent to keep Nank and CCJ for me. Chol for reserve ruck/ forward maybe but doubtful.
Midfield - must find more talent with speed as our champs are not getting any younger. Caddy, Cotch and Prestia all a bit injury prone nowadays? Dow/RCD still no certainties
KPF - is JR8 really good for another year? He's struggling below his knees now IMHO. If he loses his leap, end could come fast.

I think Saad could improve outta sight on our list. Speed and more speed baby. Keep Markov as well.

Wonder if Broad for Saad would be a relatively effective trade that might benefit everyone.

I suggested it to an Essendon mate. We both agreed that we'd both be paying overs, so that makes me think it's about right.

Why is everyone so sure that Broad wants out or is actually going anywhere.

He was about to re sign pre covid.

Certainly not sure. But it seems he's undecided, and trading players is a thing that happens.

We would lose on that deal from a team balance perspective - Broad can play more roles than Saad can and we have Saad skill base covered by other players.

And Broad is a 2 x premiership player who has performed well in GF.
The highest of pressure cookers.

Rumors of hold ups with resigning Broad, Nank and Graham simply because of our interest in an outsider and waiting for the TPP finality to see what we were playing with.

Since then the offer has apparently come for Fridge from the Baggers which might see him go ..i... we dont want him to go but if he chooses the $$ then we bend the Blues over for him seriously.

I'd be seriously pissed if we lost Broad and Graham and or a kid such as RCD only to bring in Saad.

But thats me.

I think thats probably true. It depends on how long Houli has left though. Because, as flexible as Broad is, he's not getting a game right now.

Surely not all this stress over Saad? Whom we don't even necessarily need. Would be delighted to keep those 3 and forget about Saad.

Saad would be Houli replacement, not a Short replacement. Houli has a80% uncontested possie rate this year. Markov has had some encouraging games but yet to prove himself. I think discussions are mute though as Saad will be demand pretty good coin.

If Saad is leaving Esserdun it's his idea. And fair enough.

Esserdun's backline star this year has been Ridley. His performance has hidden some glaring problems in their backline. Chiefly a lack of talent. But a lack of application at times even by Ridley.

Saad often plays tight at Esserdun to lock something down. And he has to leave his opponent to double team with team mates who would otherwise get chopped up. Redman is a project player. Very immature. Plays like an 18yo. For most of the season Hurley has been in terrible form. Awful. He's the good one. And did find some form eventually.

Francis lacks talent, athleticism and size. If Hooker plays it's usually badly. Zerk Thatcher is an improver but the young ones get caught out of position or they fumble. The senior players like Saad do some baby sitting. McKenna didn't want to play in the backline. Martin Gleeson is in career-best form and holds a spot there.

Who ya gunna be watching? To make sure he doesn't get on the gallop? Only one player - Saad. And that makes it easier. The Dons desperately need more running backs. If Saad is leaving it is his idea.

Acceleration vs Velocity.

The 20m is the go to benchmark for footy speed - acceleration. Saad tested quicker than Oleg. And Oleg has some toe.

The radar tests are velocity. How quick at full gallop? Closing speed, wing gallop speed. Oleg is blistering. But he can't break a line the way Saad does. Yet.

If we're interested in Saad we think we can improve him. Immediately. He won't be babysitting Redman and Ridley. He's freer.

That said, we need more than 19 disposals average from a running back.

Bachar is a very different player to Saad. Bachar is measured. Fills the hole. Wins it and runs. Saad halves a lot. We might think we can teach him these harder plays. Very different temperaments but who knows?

Bachar Houli is a Richmond champion. We don't currently have a replacement in the offing.

We are a bit iffy for stoppage. We can be awesome if everybody is right. But our strike mids are ageing and only Shai is coming through right now. And that means we need hurt off half back. Now and maybe next year and the year after.

Geelong is only four more Cam Guthries away from a flag. They've got one. They need five. They lack dash. They should be throwing everything at Saad. Not Higgins.

But they'd need to develop him. Can they do that? Do you think we could?

Markov needs a long run of games not just 3-4 then get dumped to fit in a more experienced/ highly rated player.
This would be Saad’s third club which to me says a lot about his team ethic - he hasn’t got one.
