3D TV's coming soon.

I've just bought a 55" Samsung smart TV.
Very disappointed with the resolution of standard def TV and my (extensive) DVD collection. Can't stand it. Quality is sh!thouse.
Looks like it's BlueRay and HD from here on, so going to cost me a lot more than just the expense of a new set. :(

does your bluray player upscale your dvd's to 1080p?

Mate I haven't bought a Blueray player as yet..
It's just a regular DVD player I'm using with regular audio/video cables. No HDMI cable connection.
The TV upscales the DVDs but the quality looks ordinary. Worse than I was (probably naively) expecting.
How much improvement can I honestly expect from a Blueray player upscaling the DVDs?

the first thing i would look at is the connections. if the dvd player allows try a hdmi cable. you might be surprised at the improvement in picture quality. if your player doesn't support hdmi, then try component cables which will see an improvement from the old red yellow and white rca cables.

a panel of that quality will usually only emphasise the poor quality of sd unless the player has good upscaling chips and the cables allow the best possible image, so dont expect too much. but at the same time make a decision only after you have tried the above before splashing out.

as a rough guide...... with hdmi connections all round and the player set up correctly (16:9 tv type and 1080p upscaling) upscaled dvd will look somewhere close but a little better than sd foxtel.

Thanks Lids.

Yeah that guide is about the standard I'm getting.
I think the TV is upscaling the DVD's decently enough but when you put it next to Foxtel HD and the BlueRay examples on the inbuilt hard drive, the DVD quality resembles youtube clips on my laptop (well not quite but you get the drift).
It's a little frustrating thinking that my entire DVD collection now looks of completely inferior quality on the 55" set.
Nice to have the big TV and all but it's not really what I was expecting.
The 55" format really is designed for BlueRay and HD TV. Poor ol DVD doesn't really cut it anymore.

yeah kinda sucks but i wouldnt even bother with bluray either. its all about downloadable content and video on demand these days and moving forward. the only decision you have to make is which provider to choose from.
