2024 Richmond Coach

I think we should seriously consider Ashley Hansen. I've heard from lots of sources he has a great Footy IQ and is looking for a job. Currently serving under Voss as an assistant. Took over when Vossy had COVID and coached a major upset win against the Doggies in 2022.

Not many 2nd club coaches have taken their new club to a premiership in recent times - Malthouse the most recent? In-fact I can’t think of many that have even taken a team to a grand final, perhaps Lyon at Freo?

Senior Coaching is a young man’s game nowadays (aside from Dimma the most successful of recent years - Clarkson & Scott - were 34 and 40 when they won their first premierships) so for this reason I think we need someone new.

Taking on as senior coach a guy , no matter how good a player he was, who hasn’t coached at all is a recipe for disaster.

yep, needs to be an up and coming assistant coach. No retreads, no past champ players who have shown no interest in coaching.

MIni gets a shot and good luck to him.

A. What percentage of coaches are 2nd or more club per year?

B. What percentage of 2nd or more coaches win a flag per year.

If B < A I agree.

But I’d like to see the numbers.

If A is small then of course there aren’t that many. Judging it based on A is an easy cognitive error.

This year A is 4/18. Lyon voss Scott Clarkson

Last year 2/18 ratten Voss.

Personally I think successful senior coaching is a Middle Aged persons game.

Young people haven’t had the experiences of hiring and firing / dealing with disappointment and success of others etc.

In a strange way I'm excited about what's next.
There was a sense of complacency that has crept into Tiger supporters & no doubt the playing group.
Struggle is good. Re-invigoration is good.
A new chapter begins.

Fly and Leppa took the 20 pieces of silver.
Perhaps Mini takes over as senior coach.
He has been at Tigerland since 2014.
The time is ripe for Jack R to retire at the end of the year, become an assistant, then ultimately senior coach.
A great tactical genius of the game.

I like Bucks as a person and a commentator but not sure about him as a coach. He's the same age as Dimma - not saying that's too old but he'll be 60 in a decade.

Lappin, Hansen, Yze, Caracella, Bassett are the first to come to my mind.

Buckley is the most boring speaker Ive ever heard. No.

Get on the blower to Neeld, Noble and Bolton. Learnt a lot from experience and should be ready to go again.

Capper is a deceptively astute student of the game, Fev as assistant would be a dreamteam.

Dane Swan would be a great get.

Prefer all of those over Buckley

Those on here that believed on the LeppaCella myth would surely want Caracella. Surely they'd want the real impetus for our premiership gameplan to get the senior gig right?

Benny said the process would start with mapping out what the attributes needed to be for the next senior coach that will focus on the next 10 years.

To me this means where our list is at (development or polish). where the game is heading, where our current membership is at (do we need a spruiker or deliverer) etc.

Looks like our process will be quite methodical not just going straight to Ross Lyon and begging like Cartoon and Aints of recent times. Good news.

Leysy has no idea and no opinion on who should be our next coach.

But he knows two things about the prospective appointment.

Knowing who are the best assistants out there is impossible to know. No-one on here would have much of a clue as it's all hearsay and media fanboy as to who is next best. So many pinup assistants have been absolute failures, and many no-names that were routinely looked over have been a success.

However, you can rule a line through a couple of names that are being thrown up here. Shaun Grigg has what 3 years in coaching, a couple of those just in development. No matter how good tactically, it's impossible for him to have the all round people management experience to take an AFL role on.

The role is so big now, he is still a minimum 5 years away from being ready (his own team for a few years for starters, plus more line mgmnt experience). Likewise Steve Morris who has been nominated.

And Hodge is even more ridiculous.

Whilst Benny and Balmey are with us, we are in good hands. It's fun to throw names around, but none of us have much of an idea.

I’d like to have Grigg back, but not as senior coach, not yet. He’s got more of an apprenticeship to do. Same with Morro.
