2021 Draft Thread

We aren’t seriously comparing Short with Franklin? *smile* it’s going to be a long off season on PRE.
Just trying to change the subject away from the annual Tambling was the worst recruit in 20 yrs fable.
As if we haven’t heard it enough from the opposition supporters

And as many best and fairests.
Kicks and marks irrelevant
Shorty gets lots of kicks n for a big bloke Flanklin's a crap mark, of course these things are relevant. Shorty runs like a shower of .......... as well n makes massive yardage so he's got the old codger covered there too.

really ?

Name me 19 that are worse?
Very easy really

Just go through the drafts and have a look to see which top 10 picks have not played more than 120 games

2005 - beau Dowler #6 , #8 - JON ,
2006 - Scott Gumbleton #2 , Mitch Thorpe #6 ,
2007 - Cale Morton #4 , Jarrad Grant #5
2009 - Anthony Morabito #4 , John Butcher #8 , Andrew Moore #9 , Jordan Gysberts #11 , Kane Lucas #12
2010 - Harley Bennel #2 , Daniel Gorringe #10 , Lucas Cook #12
2011 - John Patton #1 , Dom Tyson #3 , Matt Buntine #5 , Liam Sumner #10
2012 - Jonno O'Rourke #2 , Lochie Plowman #3 , Jimmy Toumpas #4 , Troy Menzel #11
2013 - Kade Kolodjasni #5 , Mathew Sharenberg #6 , Nathan Freeman #10 , Ben Lennon #12

26 players in 8 years and i could have added another 10 which would have been touch and go with Bling
No need to go even further back or foward and look at players like Lounder , Corey Ellis or Bootsma

Very convenient to completely ignore the player taken straight after Tambling, which is actually the whole point, the opportunity cost of taking Tambling

Its too simplistic looking at it like that though. You could go back to the 2009 draft and say that everyone drafted after Dusty and before Fyfe is a bust because Fyfe was a better player.

The only spot available is for a Cat B rookie, it doesn't need to be filled. I would assume we go with 43. We have rarely taken more than 1 Cat B rookie at a time.
I hope we steal Ronnie from the drug cheats just to *smile* them off. Their thievery of our IP is getting obscene

My Understanding and i could be wrong is that we wanted Roughy, and were never going to pick Franklin, based on this its a mute point.

If the conversation is about our recruiting team then yes we missed a ripper in Franklin no doubt, this happens to all clubs at some point, almost every year or so actually. If no tambling one could then argue we messed up choosing Brett and not Franklin.. Its a silly argument actually as recruiters make decisions every year, some choose on needs and list management and some best available..

In hindsight Franklin was the best payer in that draft IMO..

Hindsight recruiting is always silly and IMO unless you were apart of the decision making process you would never understand the reasoning and thus our opinions of decision making carry little weight.

If its about Tambling being the biggest bust in past 20 years then that clearly isnt the case after 100+ games.

Correct. We were always taking Deledio with pick 1 and Roughead was going to be our second pick at 4. Hawks got smart and took him with their first pick. Can’t remember if it was pick 2 or 3 as the Dogs took Griffen with their first and all 3 clubs had priority picks that year. Roughy going early appeared to knock us off stride. Tambling had a ripper carnival and Franklin had a poor one. We then picked Tambling at 4 and the Hawks took Franklin after us. Hawks were clever and got 2 key position players. A lot of people think Franklin was Hawthorns first pick but he was their second.

If we had taken Buddy he would have shot through as soon as his 2 years was up to another club.

Would have been nice to have both Franklin and Ricoh in the side at the same time. Even if short term.

Tambling is the biggest draft bust of the last 20 years because the player we passed on has achieved the following and is still playing

4 Coleman medals
8 All Australian jumpers , 1 as captain
318 games, 995 goals
2 flags
1 best and fairest

Tambling biggest career highlight was winning the Sturt Best and fairest after he was delisted by the crows in 2012.

The only other draft bust that was arguably worse was Trengrove and Scully ahead of Dusty. Both of those players were Elite talents however crueled by injury
Beg to differ on Scully.Never reached the heights even before injury ruined his career.

And if we got Buddy then we may have missed out on Cotch & Dusty.

Has nothing to do with who was taken after him as that happens in every draft and unless there is a crystal ball cannot know what the future holds but when discussing worst drafting there would be dozens worse.

But surely missing out on the GOAT by selecting Scully/Trengove would easily be worse
Or selecting Griffin before franklin/Roughy if you want to look at it that way

How many teams bombed out before Alex Rance was selected t pick #18 ?

100 games for a crap club playing crap football where he was a passenger and didn’t make the top 10 in the best and fairest once ?
Playing 100 games for Richmond back then , is not that much of an achievement surely

The only Bling that matters now is the premiership cup we won in 2017.

And 2019.

And 2020.

...but if you really still care about quality KPFs, well, lucky we drafted a triple coleman / triple B&F / triple premiership player and VC in 2006 because we needed a KPF at the time.

Hopefully more Bling is added to the trophy cabinet soon.

Gotta confess to having been a fan of Morabito at the time. Now that would have been a nightmare of a selection compared to the other three. Poor kid got obliterated by knees n barely even got on the park.
